The Best Kind of Hangover

Zimm woke up with a start. “Where am I? Ugh, and why does my head hurt?” A few moments passed and brought a small amount of clarity to his world. He was in his room, on his bed, and he didn’t remember going to bed at all. As he tried to figure out how he got there, his memory began to return in small bits. That infernal green bottle, the even worse video…Brie.

As he thought her name, something rustled next to him. It was dark, so when he looked he could barely see but the shape laying on the bed next to him was unmistakable. It was her. She was still asleep so he tried not to make any sudden movements. She seemed so peaceful, so content, so beautiful. He laid his head back on the pillow and took in the sight of her. Try as he might, he couldn’t remember what had happened between the two of them. How long had she been there? Did they…?

Staring into her closed eyes he brushed a strand of hair out of her face. Zimm had always imagined that he would someday marry a Bajoran woman that was filled with a sense of adventure and curiosity like him. A woman with an appreciation for history. Maybe an artist. She would have a direction for her life, she would know all the places that she wanted to travel too, the things that she wanted to see and do. Brielle Jayde was none of that. Of course, like the woman of his imagination, she was beautiful, but she was grounded, not adventurous. She had an attitude, and it wasn’t one of gentleness and humility. And Zimm wasn’t even sure if she liked art. Despite all of that though, Zimm felt more and deeper for her than he had for any other person he had ever met. The woman of his dreams had nothing on this woman laying next to him.

He couldn’t help but smile as he thought about how different his love had turned out. He still didn’t know if they had done anything while he was…incapacitated, but it didn’t matter. Suddenly, for the first time in his life, the relationship that he was in could not be made better by a physical component. The only burning desire he had for physical contact was to hold her and soak up her presence.

He looked up, over her head at the chronometer sitting on the table next to his bed. He had 30 minutes until he was going to be expected in engineering for whatever it was that Razot wanted to work on. Plenty of time to grab a sonic shower, get dressed and get to work. He had to work to peel himself away from her, it was like there was an invisible bond that tied them together in such a way that Zimm just couldn’t get away. But he had to.

Before leaving, he went to the replicator and procured a light breakfast on a tray, complete with a vase and flowers, and placed it on the table behind Brie. He was tempted to crawl back into bed and spend the rest of the day just being next to her but he knew that he couldn’t afford the trouble at work. So he leaned over and kissed her gently on the forehead. She didn’t stir. He turned to the door, walking out, but had to steal one more glance at her. He smiled. “I think I love you Brielle Jayde.” Already his head was clearing up, and the day was looking brighter.
