In a breathy, resigned voice, Cindy asked, "You disapprove?"

Phil gazed into middle distance for a moment.

"No. You were right. We don't have time to pussy-foot around on this one. There are other colonies in danger and pushing for a confrontation sooner, while they're still complacent is likely to wrong-foot them."

He turned and smiled at her. "Does seem a pity to waste knowing something they don't know, but it can't be helped."

Cindy sighed. "You know, Phil, this is not what I expected on a first real mission. It is more your area of expertise than mine. Yet, I have to be the one to make the decisions. It is good to know that you think that I haven't made a mistake so far." She then gave a wide grin that seemed to make the entire turbolift lighter. "I'm not going to get myself killed just so you can have the chair."

"Glad to hear it," Phil replied. "I'd hate to see the Yeoman trying to get your blood out of the fabric..."

He raised an eyebrow as the turbolift slowed to a half.

Cindy laughed at the thought of a Yeoman taking blood out of the Captain's chair. "I have to tell you, Phil, this is not as easy as I had thought. Nothing really can prepare you for the actual being of Captain."

"This is true. It genuinely is where the buck stops. The one who gets to write the letters to the people who are lost... but also the one who gets to glow with pride when it all works out."

Cindy smiled at that. "Thank God I have good people like you covering my ass and making me look better." She gave a quick wink at Phil.

Phil was just considering whether he could get away with a comment about the Captain's ass when the doors whooshed open.

"After you..." he deferred.

Cindy nodded and said, "Thank you, Phil. You're always the gentleman." She got out of the lift and waited to walk side by side to the briefing room with Phil.

Phil followed and walked with her to the briefing room, standing back as the door opened, to enable CIndy to enter first.

Cindy gave a pleasant smile at Phil as she entered the briefing room, a bit surprised that they had been beaten there by Vodden and Nav. She wondered why Aislinn was there. Perhaps it was for Nav's discussion. She reckoned she would find out soon enough.

A small man, standing only five feet, four inches tall hurried into the room just after Cindy and Phil entered. Nav knew this man as Chief Engineeer, First Lieutenant Isaac Whitney. He gave his Ensign a meaningful icy stare before taking his seat.

Cindy took a seat at the head of the briefing table and waited for Phil to take the seat on either side of her. She was not sure who take the seat on the other side of her. She never had considered the concept of assigned seating. Cindy debated the topic mentally as a rather large, dark, African man, muscles obviously bulging took the spare seat next to Cindy. He nodded and told her in a thick accent, "Good to see you Captain. I hear there is trouble."

Cindy answered with a warm smile and a slightly flirtatious tone, "Commander Imamu Tumelo, I am certain there could be no trouble wherever you are."

Tumelo gave a wide, white toothy grin. "You are kind, Captain."

Cindy looked over the assembled crew and noticed that only the Science Chief, Lieutenant Baldwin was missing. Cindy turned to Aislinn and asked, "Miss Norson, did Roddy, er, Lieutenant Baldwin tell you that there was some sort of issue? Do you know where he is?"

Cindy was surprised that the Ensign was sent in Roddy's place but now was not the time for that discussion. It was the time for action. "Very well, Ensign. Just make sure that he has the information discussed here."

Cindy then turned to the table and said, "Thank you everyone for coming. As you may know, we have a situation. We are currently shadowing a Romulan ship. We know that it has destroyed at least one outpost and possibly three outposts leaving K-6 and K-7 without adequate communications back to Starfleet. Making things more difficult is that this ship is cloaked and it has a weapon that seems to be some sort of plasma energy that virtually disintegrates anything that it touches. I am hoping that science has managed to beam over some of the debris for analysis and can tell us more about our mystery ship."

Dr. Vodden had arrived at the meeting shortly after the call came over. She wandered into the observation lounge and seeing Nav gave a wave and a smile, then sat down.

Nav smiled back and waved; it was nice to see Jill here.

She moved to stand up when the Captain and Commander entered, but then caught sight of her own Chief and froze, meeting his gaze evenly and retaking her seat slowly. Nav resettled in the chair and shifted her attention to the Captain, purposefully looking away from Lieutenant Whitney. There was nothing she could do to make this easier, and everything he could do to make this more difficult.

Commander Tumelo, Nav repeated the name to herself as she committed it to memory. Head of Security and Tactical she surmised by not only his shirt colour but also his obvious physical prowess. Looking down at her PADD on the table and keeping her face impassive, she heard the exchange between them. It might have been polite conversation, or perhaps something more, but it was not her place to judge or even be concerned with it. She was also glad to have a distraction from her own Chief who more than likely would have preferred to have her frog marched out of the room and down into the depths of Frankie, never to be heard from again. Well, harping on it wasnt going to change anything, and in her first briefing, she couldn't afford to be any more distracted.

Looking around the table, she was surprised to note that not only was Ensign Norson the only other lower ranking officer at the table, that she was there instead of her own Chief. A small sinking in the pit of her stomach began and she cautiously looked around the table. Chiefs from every department called for this briefing, and her. Taking a deep soft breath, she wondered what was going on, and it wasn't long in coming.

Romulan? Nav's eyebrows raised in some concern and pulled her PADD toward her, reviewing the information as it was uploaded onto it. Her mind started working furiously as she began to cross reference details and data with known ship configurations, even not of Romulan origin. With Nero's incursion into the timeline, anything at all could have happened. Communications were compromised, leaving this sector on their own. What was out here that might constitute an attack to isolate them wasn't clear. Surely the agricultural impact of the grain couldn't possibly have made this Romulan ship justified to attack several Federation outposts. Was this perhaps a deliberate act of War?

Nav waited patiently for the full extent of data from Ensign Norson and Science before drawing any conclusions.

Aislinn looked up from her PADD, "Lt. Baldwin is busy working on repairs in Science. He sent me since I'd already been on the away mission and involved in the entire mission."

Cindy was surprised that the Ensign was sent in Roddy's place but now was not the time for that discussion. It was the time for action. "Very well, Ensign. Just make sure that he has the information discussed here."

"Aye, Captain. Of course.

Cindy then turned to the table and said, "Thank you everyone for coming. As you may know, we have a situation. We are currently shadowing a Romulan ship. Aislinn was still putting information together as the Captain was talking. She was still paying attention, she heard every word. One of her strong suits was mentally multitasking, and it was about to pay off. She looked up, realizing that everyone's eyes were on her, especially the Captain's, who probably didn't know yet that she had that ability. The look on her face said as much anyways. Well, it was time to prove what she could do.

"Um, yes, Captain, everything you mentioned is correct: Romulan, cloaked, plasma weapon." She looked at her PADD then back to the Captain. "What I've just been able to piece together is that both the weapon and the cloak have to be taking up all that ship's energy. With that amount of usage, it shouldn't have anything more than impulse power. But that's not all: according to the last readings we got, the ship is heading back toward the Klingon Neutral Zone."

"The Klingon border?" Jill asked in surprise. "That could only mean one thing, the Romulans may have a treaty with the Klingons and are working with them!"

Cindy then thanked Aislinn and said, "I am looking for recommendations, people. What do all of you suggest?"

Vodden didn't hold back. "I think the answer is obvious, captain. If indeed there is some kind of agreement between those two powers, we must find out all we can about it's mission. Has there been an attempt to gain access to their computer records. Captain's log perhaps?" she looked around the table. "Either way, we can't let that ship return home. Not without some kind of action for what it's done. It would show weakness.."

Cindy gave a look of surprise at her Chief Medical Officer. For someone who had been on the Moonbase for years doing medical research, this was quite an unexpected reaction. First she looked back over at Aislinn and asked, "Did we learn anything about the plasma weapon? Did we get some of the debris beamed over? It would be helpful if we could structure a defense against the weapon."

Commander Imamu Tumelo piped up. "I agree, Captain. We must attack now. It has broken the treaty by crossing the Romulan Neutral Zone, let alone coming across the Klingon Neutral Zone. If we let it escape, there is no proof of the incursion. When destroyed on this side, there would be no doubt of the Romulan's guilt."

Whitney first gave a cold hard look at Ensign Khangura and replied, "I'm inclined to agree with Miss Vodden. We need to know what it is doing but if we cannot, destroy it. I don't know of a defense against its weapon."

The captain looked at Aislinn and said, "I know that you're standing in for your chief but he designated you to this post, so I need your opinion, Ensign Norson."

Cindy gave a warm smile at Nav and said, "Nav, you're here for a reason. I would like your thoughts on this matter, as well. This is not a time for silence."

Whitney met Nav's eyes and she could see that his glare was conveying envy, hatred, and warning. Nav clearly could take from his glare that she had better not dare disagree with him before the Captain.

Nav stared back at Whitney, glanced at each of the members of the table and smiled warmly back at the Captain. "I tend to agree with Dr. Vodden and Chief Whitney as well, Captain Cindy," she said carefully and with some consideration. "If the Romulans know that we can see them, and if their ship is expected to only be able to manage impulse power, perhaps we should also consider its shielding capabilities." Shrugging a little, she turned to Ensign Norson. "It'll be like cornering a rat; they won't have the ability to make the border unless they remove us. Cloaking is an admirable defense if it holds, but are we certain that it doesn't have any shields?"

Holding her breath, she continued, looking at the Chief of Security then back to Whitney, knowing that no matter what she said, she'd be paying for it, even though she was agreeing with her Chief and now, her Nemesis. "If we fire at it, and it isn't destroyed, it will have the ability to fire its weapon at us and as Chief Whitney has pointed out, we have no defense against it." That would mean casualties and quite possibly the destruction of Frankie. There had to be a reason for this act of aggression; perhaps if they could manage to hack the computer systems there might be more data at least on the ship's full layout and systems. If there were no shields they should be able to shoot at it now and disable it, or at least knock out their propulsion system.

Nav reviewed the logs from the Bridge and noticed that Comm had piggy backed the carrier signal back to the Romulan ship to get visuals. "We already have access to one their ship's systems, Captain. Can we use that connection to grab as much information from them about their ship for when we do attack?"

Cindy tossed her hair, her eyes darkening a bit. She looked over at Phil and asked, "Thoughts from the XO?"

“Moving towards the Klingon Neutral Zone does not automatically indicate an alliance,” Phil observed. “They could just as easily be intending to do the same to them, while cloaked, in the hope that we blame each other and go to war, leaving them to take over whatever's left when we've finished. Or...” let's face it, the Klingons weren't going to publicise the fact, “... they may have done so already. We need to stop them and preferably get evidence in case this does blow up into a diplomatic incident. Hacked data is a start, but we could be accused of making it up. Hard evidence – parts, people would be better. We also need to get that cloaking device and their weapon out of commission one way or another. If the Romulans make a success of it, or even worse, the Klingons get hold of it...” Phil shook his head. “We have to stop them. Here.”

She then turned to Luke and said, "I appreciate your concern for those who may have been on the outpost but there are no lifesigns, the outpost is demolished, and it is exposed to space. We can grieve for them later. There are many more to protect."

They locked eyes then, Captain Cindy and Ensign Luke. And as she commanded him to obey her order, very commandingly, that funny feeling Luke had felt earlier rushed back in intense intensity. Luke's eyes went wide in that moment and when the Captain turned her back his voice was all but a whisper: "Yes, Mistress Cindy..."

His fingers flew over the controls, putting the Legacy alongside the cloaked ship and from that moment on the Legacy became the shadow of the shadow.

Though in the deep recesses of Luke's brain couldn't shake the thought that, maybe, someone might still be alive in that station.

Needs of the many...

According to some.

"The Klingon border?" Jill asked in surprise. "That could only mean one thing, the Romulans may have a treaty with the Klingons and are working with them!"

Aislinn nodded, "We did get a sampling of the debris from the station, for what it's worth. Most of the pieces are similar: Very small. It's amazing, really. The toughest material we can find, and this weapon turns the entire structure into dust! Based on this information, I think it's a plasma torpedo that this ship is using. After watching the footage we acquired and our own visual from this outpost, I can tell you that the torpedo unleashes an enveloping energy plasma, forcing an implosion in its target."

She turned back to her Chief Medical Officer and said, "Jill, I am certain that is one possibility but let's not close our minds to others."

Cindy then thanked Aislinn and said, "I am looking for recommendations, people. What do all of you suggest?"

Vodden didn't hold back. "I think the answer is obvious, captain. If indeed there is some kind of agreement between those two powers, we must find out all we can about it's mission.

Aislinn looked at her notes, trying to come to a conclusion that would make sense, and not make her look a fool at her first chief meeting. She didn't want to let Lt. Baldwin down, but this situation wasn't allowing for a lot of time to pass. And her opinion clashed with some of those given by officers more experienced than she. But, if the Captain wanted her opinion, perhaps she should have it. "I agree with parts of what Dr. Vodden said. We need to find out the ship's mission. As I said earlier, it shouldn't be able to move far having only impulse power. And I'm guessing the ship doesn't have much energy left to keep firing away as it has been, unless they're reserving energy for another target. Although, by my calculations, there's a low probability of that being the case. I do believe if we destroy the ship, we will destroy any evidence of what it was doing here."

Cindy went silent after hearing her chiefs' various opinions but most were suggesting attack. However, Cindy was not motivated towards aggression, unless it was in sports, which was more than perfectly acceptable. After all, the team had a duty to try and win. She reasoned with herself, Exactly how is this different, Cindy? Upon hearing Aislinn's thoughts, she found an area that she could exploit. It would give the attack two possibilities and at least one could lead to a peaceful solution....

She tightened her lips slightly and said, "Very well. It seems that most are in favor of an attack. It also seems that some of you feel that more information is necessary. Based on Nav's 'whiskers' we can determine the Romulan ship's gravametric bending of time and space." Cindy took the time to give a smile of acknowledgement and gratitude to Nav. "However, while that gives us an idea of the mass it does not give us the dimensions of the ship, or of what it is composed. Consequently, we do not know exactly its location and the sensors cannot lock for firing of phasers."

A sigh escaped Cindy's mouth as she continued, slightly breathlessly at first, giving a sensual tone to her voice. "So, we will attack with a random phaser firing pattern at our first opportunity of visibility or location determination. If it becomes apparent that there is no time when we can determine exactly where it is, then we will fire blindly. Either way, we will hopefully fire to disable and get the Romulans to surrender by using all of their energy."

"Very well, everyone. Get to your posts. Dismissed."

The doctor rose from her chair and prepared to leave. She took one last look at Cindy gauging her and wondering if indeed this flippant senior officer was truly up to this? At least the XO seemed to think so.

"Very well, everyone. Get to your posts. Dismissed."

Nav was tight lipped, mostly because there were far too many factors that hadn't been considered with the decision to attack the cloaked vessel. It was a brand new configuration, and with very little information about its layout, fuel type, consumption ratios, and even something so simple as hull construction and shield strengths, this shot in the dark truly would be. There was no guarantee that the dispersal would simply disable the Romulans, or outright destroy them. Or perhaps it would only ping harmlessly off their hull that had been upgraded since Nero had come back through time to mess with everything. Perhaps that's why they were heading for Klingon Neutral Space: to discourage Starfleet from pursuing and offset a potential incident that could escalate the tensions between them.

With the plasma attack being a heavy handed combat maneuvre, it was up to the crew to ensure that Frankie made it through whatever that Romulan threw at Him. If she knew the full extent of the kinetic energy transfer, or even could hazard a potential discharge, she could shape the shields from spherical to ovular; stronger defense against a pointed physical attack. As it was, Nav was concerned about the decision made; perhaps there could be more information gleaned before they'd have to fire on it.

Her mind was going a mile a minute, and she stood, waiting for every senior officer to exit before continuing out the Briefing Room door, and headed down to Engineering once more. Her tool kits retrieved, her PADD filled with scientific data, and her mind about twenty steps ahead, she stood in the turbo lift, barely aware of anything or anyone other than the approaching Engineering deck.

The next few minutes would be crucial, and she moved quickly to take her post as the muted Red Alert still flashed ominously at a steady pace. They needed to be prepared for whatever might come once the shooting began.

TK was getting a bit twitchy. Leaving him in command well within striking distance of a hostile target was akin to putting a lion in a gazelle pen and telling it not to chow down. In fact his hand jerked toward the fire controls more than once, but he managed to restrain himself. Insubordination was one thing, but causing an interstellar incident that would likely lead to a war the Federation was more than likely to lose, against explicit orders... well TK was pretty sure that amounted to treason.

The Romulan had to know that their cloak was less than 100% effective by now. The shields were up, but the sensor footage was quite clear in showing that they could de-cloak and fire almost immediately, and TK wasn't sure this scrap heap could take even a single shot from that plasma cannon. All in all, this was the worst combat manoeuvre since Market Garden. Sure let's waltz right in, tell the bad guys we know they're here, and THEN go have a strategy meeting while they decide the best way to atomize us with their future-tech weapon of mass destruction.

Treason was looking like a better option by the second.

The only hope any of them had for survival was the slim chance that the Romulan's were just as confused by the Legacy's brazen posture as TK was. Maybe they'd start wondering what secret Starfleet had up its sleeve that could justify such a ballsy move. Pretty slim hope, that.

The doctor returned to sickbay after the meeting and immediately checked to make sure Ensign Soban hadn't destroyed anything. Nothing was obvious, so she proceeded to call a meeting of her own.

"Okay so listen up people.." she said once everyone was assembled. "We're currently shadowing an enemy ship that attacked our outposts. We suspect it might be Romulan. The captain intends to possibly engage it and stop it's activities, so there's a high chance we may have multiple casualties here. I need every one of you to be ready for a mass triage, and surgeons stand by for surgery if required. Other then that, we go as usual. Conserve supplies, be ready to assist as needed. Trauma teams are already out, so those of us here, just sit tight and be ready in case anything happens. If you have questions, now's the time before things get dicey."

As Williams sat on the bridge, twitching and worrying the Romulan ship, he noticed that there was a comet that was streaking towards the Quo'nos' solar system. The Romulan ship adjusted its flight path to maneuver into the tail of the comet, which was shining brightly.

"Captain, you'd best get your ass back to the bridge, pronto. We got a problem." TK growled into the ships intercom.

"Helm, if you lose that ship I'll have your balls bronzed. Science, whatever it takes, boost the gain on the whiskers. Just don't divert power from propulsion or tactical systems."

"The comet's tail?" Cindy mused aloud. "Interesting. Have they changed course at all since plotting towards the comet? After all, we can't see them to lock phasers right now but if they go through the tail, we would get a streak enough to fire on. We can out maneuver them. They only have impulse." Cindy smiled.

Target lock? Ha! No marksman worth a damn relied on a taget lock to hit their target.

"They'll likely alter course once inside the tail. I suggest we pull up tight alongside the the comet trail to maximize our field of fire."

Slightly disturbed at the decision she made she told those assembled, "This is certainly not what I had planned for our first encounter on our five year mission but we have our duties to fulfill. I pray that we will return to peaceful explorations shortly."Very well, everyone. Get to your posts. Dismissed."

Aislinn nodded as she gathered up her stuff. It looked like she'd backed the wrong horse, so to speak. Not that she should have picked a side just to pick the winning side. But there was still a sense of loss having not been able to convince the Captain to choose one's option. She looked across the table, and it appeared that Nav was experiencing similar feelings. Well, maybe a bit more intense than she was. She tried to offer a supportive smile if it helped, but she wasn't sure it did.

But, it wasn't as if the Captain hadn't listened to everyone's input. In fact, she'd specifically asked for her and Nav's opinions fully aware that both of them were brand new.

"Captain, you'd best get your ass back to the bridge, pronto. We got a problem." TK growled into the ships intercom.

Well, perhaps experience would prove the victor after all. She supposed they would all be finding out soon enough, as she slipped out of the room, then made a beeline for her station, catching herself up on the current scans. hmm...a comet, eh? If the ship was heading for it, there must be something in there that was beneficial to them. Something to help them hide better maybe? A shared element that would help hide them better?

Cindy had just concluded the meeting and tried to contain a small smile when she heard TK's voice. Maybe she really was finally getting him to like her. She hit a wall intercom near Vodden, =/\= On my way, Lieutenant. =/\=

"Helm, if you lose that ship I'll have your balls bronzed. Science, whatever it takes, boost the gain on the whiskers. Just don't divert power from propulsion or tactical systems."

"Aye!" She responded with a grin. Maybe they were on the same page. She sent the whiskers farther from the ship, and tried to boost their signals at the same time. "Boosting the Whiskers..." She didn't have a problem with leaving plenty of power left over for the requested systems...yet. She also began scanning the comet for it's contents. This ship could not be allowed to get away...

Phil had to force back a grin - ordering the Captain to get her ass back? The guy was either heading for an airlock or a promotion and he wasn't prepared to bet on which...

"We should probably talk later when there's a lull in this situation and get some groundwork under us concerning needs of the crew and your own health." Jill smiled then moved to the doorway.

"You do know she's going to remind you about that at every opportunity, don't you?" Phil raised an eyebrow at Cindy. "One reason why I got my M.O.T. sorted day one..." Not that he was smug or anything. Oh, no siree.
