“Time for pleasantries later,” advised Finn. “Get ready to grab their guns.”

He crept round behind the two whose legs he had taped together then, bobbing up, tapped one on the shoulder.

“Tag – you're it!”

As the man turned, two things happened. Firstly, Finn dived over the next table, but secondly and more importantly, the second guy had opted to turn the other way. The tape tautened between the two troopers' legs and both fell flat on their faces, guns skittering away as they abandoned them in favor of using their hands to cushion their landing.

Rixar watched for a moment and then nodded for Tavlia to take the nearest gun. The other gun slid out and across the floor. Far enough that the troopers couldn't use it and anyone else wanting to pick it up in this bar probably either had their own weapon, or shouldn't have been on this planet.

Opting for his more reliable sidearm, he slung the shotgun on his back and pulled out the pistol from his hip holster. Peaking out from the table, he noticed the two troopers across the bar where occupied and the four near the door were in the process of sending blaster bolts across the bar and dealing with a pair of assailants from behind.

Making her decision, Tavlia laid low, crawled and slithered over to Finn while taking the most cover that she could to avoid being hit. She then crawled next to Finn and told him, "I can't show you my gratitude if you crawl away from me. Besides, I am defenseless. I am safest with you."

"Mind if I join you?" Rixar asked. "You're better company than they are."

"Nice of you to say but crouching is not my favorite position," Tavlia told him with slight innuendo.

Finn made a mental note – what with that reply and her lack of complaint to his hand around her waist earlier, she was either a streetwalker or a grifter. At the moment, his money was on the latter...

“Time for pleasantries later,” advised Finn. “Get ready to grab their guns.”

Tavlia took the near gun and looked at it as if she were a novice. Certainly she had fired before. Boodra made it his personal point to instruct her; however, she had never had to do it against anyone and she was not about to do it here. Firing would label her as a traitor to the Empire, be an embarrassment to Boodra, and carried so many risks about her being killed. Tavlia was not about to do that. After all, if the Troopers won the fight, she could use the gun to hold up Finn and Rixar or only one if the other was dead.

Tavlia therefore looked at Rixar and Finn and shrugged apologetically.

Alika turned her attention to mopping the ale off her armor when Pheric drew his blaster and fired...

Alika didn't look up. She didn't have time to. Her lightsaber was already in her hand before she even registered the sound of metal sliding on leather. A tangerine energy blade sprung to life and swept upwards, catching the blaster bolt mere millimeters from her forehead.

The lightsaber caught Pheric off guard. He'd seen the pair hanging from the girl's belt, but had figured they were just decoration, trophies from past bounties. He'd been wrong. Dead wrong. Though, he reflected as he began to pour fire at the mysterious armored woman and dive for cover, it made sense that someone who made her lively hood off hunting Jedi would know how to use their weapons.

Alika's blade danced through the air, batting away the blaster bolts that passed within reach. One of the deflected bolts caught Pheric in the shoulder and he collapsed just short of the bar. That threat ended, Alika deactivated her lightsaber and turned her attention towards the other troopers in the room. To her surprise, there were only two troopers still in play. Grabbing her helmet, she slid it into place and looked down at her compatriot. "Thanks for the help."

Harm shrugged, "You had it sorted."

Meanwhile, the two remaining troopers divided their attention between the two by the door and the group under the tables. One trooper turned to fire at Kaj, while the other pulled out a comm link and dashed for cover, firing at Rixar as he ran.

Leave it to the Empire not to be quite so polite. Kaj saw the blaster raised from her position on the floor and tugged Luke down rolling them behind the trooper in a heap on the floor beside her.

Rixar saw the blaster pointed his way and ducked in time to save his life, at the cost of some hair. Already he could feel the heat blister forming on his skin. Way to close for comfort... He told himself. The trooper had been running for cover, and Rixar was going to use that to his advantage.

He decided to end this quickly. He grabbed a 'shield', smaller table, that Finn had mentioned and stood up, holding the shield towards the cowardly trooper. He then raised his pistol towards the trooper looking at Kaj and whistled. The piercing sound filled the bar and the trooper looked at him. A quick squeeze and the small grouping of slugs found their mark in the man's forehead. He fell with a thud and Rixar was glad he had gone for the head because the man's shirt lifted during the fall to reveal some armor that might have stopped his bullets.

Just then his 'shield' shattered under a bolt from Mr. Cowardly and Rixar dove behind a nearby larger table once more seeking cover.

Re: Episode 0: A Monster is Born (Pilot) - Background

Postby KendleRJ » Sat Mar 08, 2014 3:38 pm

Two years ago, Corellia

Mornings were interesting on Corellia. The beautiful sunrise, the light songs of birds in the trees, stamping feet of Imperials outside of windows and along the streets, almost better than an alarm clock. This morning was no different. Kaj Wendo stretched, yawned and then swung her legs out of bed, and placed her feet on the cold floor. She looked back at her husband Fandyl, him tucked so cozily in bed, covers draped and warm, and beckoning… But it was duty that forced her out, duty that called. Being a pilot with the Corellian Planetary Defence Force, she owed her allegiance to her home and Corellians everywhere in the Galaxy. But she had never left home.

Word in HQ was that was about to change. After getting ready, she headed to report for duty. There was something brewing and she didn’t want to miss it. There were Imperial Naval TIE Interceptors, and Naval personnel marching in small formations as she reached the gate. She was in uniform, properly and with her rank clearly shown, but she was still stopped. Security was tight, much tighter than usual. She was right; something was brewing, and it looked like the water was ready to boil. Finally cleared, she headed to her COs office with her orders clasped tightly in her fist.

Luke looked out over the grounds of the Correllian Planetary Defense Force Headquarters. It was bustling with activity. Word was a high profile convict had escaped during the night. He wore his uniform, although not the headpiece, he hated the headpiece. It took all the humanity away and made him look like some sort of mindless robot. So there he stood in his white and black armor, helmet held at his side. He saw how the CPDF personnel was checked at the gates and closely watched. It was clear that the Empire no longer fully trusted Corellia’s own police force. Luke wondered how long it would take before the Imperials would take Corellia’s security over completely.

He didn’t like one single bit of it, yet here he stood, wearing their uniform. It had been a couple of months now, since he was drafted. He had undergone physical and mental training, or, brainwashing, was more like it. It changed you. He saw bright young kids not unlike himself transform into obeying sacks of meat in only a matter of weeks. It had affected Luke too, but Luke had managed to hold on to a part of himself, at least. Or he thought he did, if nothing less.

Sighing, he started of towards the main building of the compound to get his orders for the day.

As Wendo walked, she kept her shoulders square, and her face stern. No need to make the interlopers think that she was anything other than tough, strong and as distrustful of them as they appeared to be of her. What the hell did they think? She was a loyal Corellian, and she turned her head smartly to one side to take in the changes that the Naval forces had made in such a short time. She hoped to find out what was happening as she reached for the door to step inside.

It seemed that there was a hand there before hers and she looked at the person blandly. She didn’t know him, and he was with ‘them’. Odd how they were already ‘them’. And she felt that it was ‘us’. She gripped harder, unwilling to back down, concerned for a power struggle in miniature to simply enter a building she had been working in since she began. She tugged at the door, looking at him challengingly. Her brown eyes were flinty, and her face spoke of toughness. She gripped her orders tighter. They included NOT getting into it with the Imperial Naval forces. But when did she ever worry about orders? If he made the first move, she would be justified at taking him down, and putting him on his ass. She grinned lopsidedly at the thought, her eyes twinkling with mischief and hope at such a prospect.

Luke stood by the door, lost in thought. Seeing how the CPDF personnel was being looked down upon, like they were less than others. But they were Corellians, same as he, was he different just because of a uniform? He thought about his squadmates, his superiors and all of his colleagues. They knew him, they respected him, they were familiar with his talents. Would they look down on him too if he put on one of those other uniforms? Luke thought he knew the answer. He put his hand against the door and saw his family’s signet on his finger. The signet that once was known throughout the Corellian system, a signet that was respected and trusted. This was why he was here, his family’s wealth and influence might be gone, but at least they were still alive. Being here kept them alive…

He was brought out of his thoughts by a girl that seemed to appear out of nowhere. She wore a CPDF uniform. Luke watched her, she was defiant, waiting for the smallest of signs to show him who was boss. Luke couldn’t blame her, it was difficult enough for him to walk through the compound watching his people treated this way, he couldn’t imagine what it must be for her.

So instead of giving her the fight she longed for, he smiled warmly and opened the door for her.

“Ladies first?”

Wendo’s eyebrows shot up in a mixture of surprise and disappointment, but the surprise won out. Instead of focussing on the uniform, she looked at the man who wore it. He too was Corellian, dark brown hair that curled at the ends, and his blue eyes were clear and unchallenging. The rank on his armour made him clearly an officer, and a pilot, and if she was not mistaken, there were commendation clusters in a small row below the rank. His helmet was off, so she could take full measure of his face. It wasn’t displeasing, and in fact, had she been single, it might have occurred to her to smile. In fact, she thought blandly, she began to, and thought the better of it.

He was not common for a pilot in the Navy. She expected a creep, standard issue. She’d run into them before... leering, mouthy, pushy... Those types that got into it with anyone not Navy because it was drummed into them about their vast superiority, or more like how everyone who wasn’t Navy was somehow less.

They were the EMPIRE; instead of just the first letter capitalized, they implied that all of them were equally important, and equally weighty. And the whole lot of them were just as equally arrogant. She was merely a local, one of those glorified bush pilots that couldn’t hack it, couldn’t hold up her end in a sortie, was the low rung on the ladder and was subject to ridicule. Give her one of their fancy ships instead of her Z95 Headhunter, and she could more than show them a thing or two about flying… She hated them as much as she hated what they represented, but she was a Corellian, and like it or not, her planet was under Imperial rule. If she wanted to survive, to have her family live, she’d have to at least give the appearance of cooperation.

Her brown eyes softened, but only slightly; she was a tough lady with an even tougher place to keep. There had been that moment, when she felt like a person again, but she let it pass. Perhaps that was his ploy, this Imperial Naval Pilot; to get her to lower her guard and then twist that knife of ridicule right in her back. No, this was not the time nor the place to give in to the Imperial Navy.

This would define her, and she had a reputation to maintain. She was a rank, not a gender; a pilot, not a ‘lady’. In this instance, she chose to keep her trust for those that earned it and stepped out of the way. “Of course,” she said in mock chivalric fashion, grabbing for the door handle. She made a grand gesture, bowing and offering him to proceed before her. Her voice lacked the full measure of sarcasm, but not a lot of people would be close enough to hear. However, her large and precise movements were unmistakable. After you, Imp.

“Ladies first.”

He could see the surprise in her face, but only for a split second before suspicion took its place. The show she made of letting him go first looked a bit silly, though Luke had to give her creds for it. Any other Imperial would have probably hit her in the face, giving the lady here a second chance to the fight she longed for. The whole scene made him chuckle a bit, something he hadn’t done in a long time.

Luke inclined his head in defeat. “If you insist”.

But as he was about to move inside someone else stepped out. A small, skinny young Imperial clerk. He looked hasty. He looked angry. He looked skittish. Eyes darting here and there. His eyes first found Luke who he acknowledged with a small nod. They then darted over to the girl, which caused his eyes to squint.

“Officer Wendo! You were supposed to report here at 08.00! It is NOW 08.01. There will be reprimands for this, woman. Tardiness is not tolerated here. Your and your squadron’s weekend pass is hereby revoked!”

If looks could have killed, there would be an ex-clerk standing in front of her, but she smiled instead. “You may revoke my pass, but I put in a formal request to repeal the punishment you're extending to the rest of my squadron.” Formal requests were such a horrid twist and would take far longer than the upcoming weekend to even clear approval. She could see the man knew it, but if he was going to live by protocol, he could get buried in red tape and die by protocol..
A small nerve jumped oddly at the corner of his left eye. It had to be Wendo’s Way. Kaj had been such a frustration to so many in the CPDF that her manner had garnered her a title. She stared at it as his eyelid twitched involuntarily. The more she stared, the more violent the twitch. “There is your security at the gate, and this Naval officer barring my way. I accept my punishment but will request that the fault remain where the fault has been accepted.” He finally place a fingertip on top of the lid to stop the incessant movement. She strode by him, pushing him with her presence out of the way, and past the no-named goodlooking, decorated pilot who she saw was ready to admit defeat. This was intolerable, and they could ground her if they so chose, just don’t mess with those she fought with and supported. Not over this.

“And you’ve made me even later,” she said over her shoulder. “That is inefficient and detrimental to the delivery of my orders. Please make note of that in your log as well.” What made it worse was he was one of ‘them’. Her jaw was set, and the word of the day was an angry one not made mention in mixed company. Unless of course there was plenty of drink and a possibility for some personal time with a partner of consenting interest. She hated being late.

Her legs ate up the corridor, double timing to the office. She was already pissed off, and if they pushed her any more, then it would be more than her weekend pass they’d be revoking. She had lost interest in the man who had been polite enough to open the door for her. He could fend for himself, and apparently it wasn’t his ass on the line.

Perhaps ‘they’ had seen this little display and decided it might be fun to see what Wendo would do. Well, they would find out, wouldn’t they? She knocked once on the office door as a courtesy and strode in. The wavy haired pilot could fend for himself, because if she was a betting woman, he would have been late too. Weekend pass revoked for the local kids, what the hell would they do to an Imperial Naval Pilot? Oh, she saw. They’d nod at him to death. “Officer Kaj Wendo, reporting for duty, Sir,” and noticed that she should be addressing more than one. Whatever was said about the Imperials, they had some damned intimidating uniforms. “Reporting for duty, Sirs.” She drew herself up to full attention and clicked her heels; an apology in every man’s military. It was that all important ‘s’ that could save a young cocky officer’s career. Who knew?

Commander Red looked up from the map he was inspecting on the table. When the CPDF officer burst in and announced herself he looked up. His face was covered in a big mustache surrounded by huge red cheeks. He straightened himself, straining the limits of his uniform to cope with the enormous humps of meat it was hugging. He met Kaj’s stare with a mix between pleasure and genuine concern. Then he swung around the table and rushed towards her arms ready for a warm embrace.

“Oh hello my darling! We’ve all been so worried. Where were you?!!” And before Kaj had any chance he gripped her tightly, his enormous body wrapping her in a meaty embrace. “I was so anxious to meet you, girl, your CO has told me so much about you already!”, he swung around dragging Kaj with him in the hug and addressed another high ranking officer, but then in a CPDF uniform: “tell her you have, Kevin, all those talents she has, the missions she’s accomplished!”

“Indeed I have told you, Sir,” came the dry reply from Kaj’s CO.

Then Commander Red looked back to Kaj, observing her face. “Oh oh oh, my dear! You look tired, have you slept well? Are you getting enough rest?” He was quite genuine in his concern. He took her head between his meaty hands. “You eat enough? You look a bit skinny. Hmm?” Without waiting for a reply he let her go and spun around again. “Have you been treating them well, Kevin? I’ve taken a look at your people and they don’t look well…”

“Well, Sir, I…”

Commander Red’s warm demeanour faded and was replaced by a cold glare. “You know we can’t tolerate commanders he do not treat their subordinates well; it’s destructive and puts the entire Defense Force at risk. One weak link in the chain...”

“But, Sir, I…” There was a blinding and deafening blast as Commander Red’s pistol fired a smoking hole through Kevin’s forehead. The body staggered and then fell backwards.

“Can’t afford to have any weak links in the chain…” Commander Red mused quietly as he holstered his weapon. He then turned around, all smiles and beaming genuine friendliness towards Kaj. “Well, my dear, it seems you have just been promoted. Congratulations!”

At that moment Luke walked in, who, unknown to him, had been purposefully delayed by the clerk to allow for the scene to be played out. The surprise on Luke’s face was real when he saw the dead CO lifeless on the floor. He then looked over at the higher officers and to Kaj. “Wha…?” then thought better of it, and paused. “Sir.”, he simply said, though with confusion and weariness written all over his face, his hands firmly on his blaster rifle just in case.

Kaj had been proper and wary from the beginning, however she wasn’t expecting such a radically different approach to a return salute. This Imperial Officer looked more like a jolly old man than a hardened Navy man, but she knew, as with all things Imperial, nothing could ever be quite what it seemed. She watched in horror as her CO was dressed down in front of her, and then summarily executed. Her face remained impassive, but her eyes watched the entire scene with a split focus between defending her CO and avoiding a blaster shot that she fully expected to follow the one delivered accurately to his forehead.

She had not spoken, and had maintained her posture at full attention, unsure as to why she had been a witness to a rather permanent demotion. She looked at the body, the smoke still curling from her CO’s forehead as it continued to slump, the face growing pale, yet locked in a look that showed the surprise he must have felt before the blow fell. What could she say? Her promotion was rather abrupt, and not mentioned on her orders. But the Empire was clearly in charge, since their CPDF ranking officer was preparing to decompose in his own office. “Sir.” There was no getting her muscles tighter, her back straighter, or her nerves more prepared than in that moment. She wasn’t sure what promotion she might have gotten, but if it ended with her being on that floor beside her former CO, there was a lot to think about. Just not today.

“I have orders…” she said and raised her hand with the information, now more crumpled in her tightly clenched fist. “I am here to serve.” It was the standard reply for the CPDF officer that she was, but she was certain that her position in it, and most probably the entire force might be in extreme jeopardy. The Empire, she feared, especially with that rather definitive display, shoved its Iron Fist up the collective buttocks of the planet of Corellia.

One breath at a time, one order at a time. One death at a time…

“Oh!” Commander Red exclaimed. “Of course you are, my sweet girl. You are really lovely, yes….hmm, very lovely. Wouldn’t you agree, Lieutenant Helios? I bet the two of you would make a most endearing young couple. Ahhh! To be young again! I know back in my day I was quite the ladies man, back before I ahh, carried less weight around.”’ He clapped his hands on his big belly. “Get it? Carrying less weight around? Whuaharharhar!!” The tremendous laugh made his his layers of skin vibrated all over.

Piece by piece the puzzle that Luke had walked into was falling into place. A prisoner had escaped from custody that night. As the commanding officer, “Kevin” was held responsible. Seeing that this had been a high profile suspect, Luke wasn’t sure, but quite possibly the Rebel Alliance had been involved somehow, it was a big setback for the Empire to have such a suspect on the loose. Knowing the Empire, and having assumed that his own guesses at the missing pieces in the puzzle were correct, Luke couldn’t be surprised that “Kevin’s” penalty for this slip up was death. Although, Luke might have taken a different course to the way the execution had taken place. Luke couldn’t conclude anything thing else but that this had been staged from the moment Kaj approached the base. The rebukes, the security check points, the insults, the overall over-empowering presence of Imperials everywhere on the base. All was put into motion in order to convince Kaj and the other CPDF personnel one thing: Mess with us, and the Empire will crush you.”

Even the Imperial Commander fitted into this play as if he had been purposefully written for it. Everything that had happened this morning was personified by this Commander. The warm smile and embrace: we will take care of you The genuine concern: we will look out for you Kevin’s execution: we will end you if you dishonour us.

Luke hadn’t met this Commander Red before, but it did not take him long to figure out that behind his warm demeanour hid a dangerous mind.

As Commander Red explained his orders for Kaj, who was now appointed Commander of this CPDF compound, to hunt down the Alliance suspect, Luke listened quietly.

“Ah, and ehh, Lieutenant Helios, what is your first name, lad?” Red asked him.

“It’s Luke, Sir”, Luke answered dutifully.

“Splendid! Good name, my young man, it suits you. Luke, I’d like you to accompany this lovely young woman, stand by her side, aid her where necessary and I am sure that together you’ll find the suspect soon and bring him back to us, preferably alive, of course. HAH!” He nodded to Luke, then walked over to Kaj, gave her two big wet kisses on both cheeks, rallied his fellow senior officers and left, leaving Luke, Kaj and the corpse alone.

For a moment, Kaj wasn’t sure what to do. She stood stock still, watching the Commander leave with his entourage, wondering whether he was a psychopath or if that was just standard fare for an Imperial officer. She opened her mouth as if to say something, and closed it just as quickly. She didn’t look at Luke Helios, the other half of the would-be endearing young couple, but instead tried to gather her wits and her courage back together as if it had fallen to the floor like her former CO. She was in charge, at least the scapegoat for this little fiasco and if what happened was any indication of what was to come, then she had better deliver or her husband would be a widower, and they would simply promote the next person in line.

Stepping to the door, she called to the Clerk. “Get someone in here to clean up this mess!” she barked out and then slammed the door in his face before he could reply. She stood looking at it for several moments, and took a small breath before she turned to Luke. “So, it looks like it’s you and me, Lieutenant,” a harsh tone underlying her words. Her eyes were deep and distant, and she moved to review the map that had been laid out. There was no use in duplicating the areas already covered, but they could definitely be revisited on the way back to HQ if there had been no joy in recovering the prisoner. Or parts of him.

There was no doubt in her mind what might happen if she failed in this mission; she would be next. “Commander Wendo,” she flinched at the rank and sighed heavily. “But please, for the purpose of our working together, you can call me Kaj.” If they were going to go off into the wilds, she didn’t need some eager Officer trying to make a name for himself saluting her in front of anyone. They would have to go undercover because despite the large Imperial presence, the Rebellion still thrived. No use in alerting the prisoner inadvertently. “We’re going undercover. Please tell me you have a change in clothes?”

Leave it to the Empire not to be quite so polite. Kaj saw the blaster raised from her position on the floor and tugged Luke down rolling them behind the trooper in a heap on the floor beside her.

She heard the blasts pelt the armour, and shrugged. She was willing not to kill the Imps in the bar, but they didn't extend the same courtesy. She hid, still crouched, waiting for the right timing to take that one down. Exchanging a look with Luke, they waited for the right moment.

Things happened so fast that before Luke had managed to fire a single shot, most troopers were already dead or dying. He fired a couple of shots to keep the troopers occupied, but none of them found their mark, he then felt a tug at his legs and fell down next to Kaj, there faces almost touching. As laser blasts pelted the body they hid behind, Luke instinctively inclined his head towards Kaj a little more making them a smaller target. As the blasts hit, time seemed to slow and the laserbolts striking the dead body became slow rythmic thuds. He looked into Kaj's eyes and saw a multitude of things.

Then time caught up to itself again, the blasts had stopped. Luke didn't waste a moment, he gripped the dead sack of smoking meat that was once a person and stood up, using the body as a shield. He ran towards the last of the troopers that was still standing, charging into him, knocking over tables and chairs in the process. The trooper, Luke and the body fell down in a heap. Within in instant Luke had his vibroblade at the man's throat.

The fear of death set into the trooper. "No! No! Please! Have mercy, man. You've won! I give up!" The words came out in a slur as he was panting heavily.
Luke held the blade where it was, his eyes staring coldly at the man he had tried to kill him. "Mercy, huh? Tell me, would you have given me mercy?" Luke asked venomously.
"Yes! Yes! I would have! Please! I don't want to die! Please, please, I have a wife!" The man pleaded.
Luke pressed the vibroblade into his throat a little deeper, Luke only had to activate the blade and it would do the work for him. "Would you have showed my family mercy? What about Alderaan? What about them, huh? Didn't they deserve mercy!?"
"Yes, yes! They did! But that wasn't me! I didn't! Please!!"

Time slowed again, the man's ragged breathing was slow and deep, Luke's own heartbeat a low beat.
"Liar..." Luke whispered, and applied more pressure to blade and the men's neck...

Then time caught up to itself again, the blasts had stopped.

Finn counted to ten before popping his head up out of cover again. Just in case. There was only one trooper left and one of the later arrivals had something held to his throat.

"Would you have showed my family mercy? What about Alderaan? What about them, huh? Didn't they deserve mercy!?"

"Yes, yes! They did! But that wasn't me! I didn't! Please!!"

"Liar..." Luke whispered, and applied more pressure to blade and the men's neck...

“Whoa,” Finn called out. Gently rising, hands where the guy could see them. Empty. Unarmed. “I get how tempting that is.” He let his Alderaan accent, normally kept to a minimum in Imperial earshot, be noticeable. “Really, I get it. But there are better things we can do...”

He looked knife-guy in the eye.

“Maybe we can send someone a message.” He looked around the others in the bar. “Anyone got anything they'd like this guy to pass on to his people...?”

tag – all

“I have...” Finn added quietly. He walked round to just behind the frightened trooper, where he coudl speak in his ear without the man seeing his face fully. “Tell them this. Tell them - they missed me. Tell them I'm not the only one. Tell them... the Children of Alderaan will be avenged. Not today. Not tomorrow. But one day, they will know. Then, quit your job. Make up an excuse. Go take up moisture farming, or kolto harvesting. Something out on the rim, out of harm's way. Walk away. Live.”

A message? Tavlia thought to herself. I could let Boodra know that I'm fine. No, too soon. I have no information. Reporting too soon would make me seem like I am pining and my mistress would not like that at all. I have to be useful.

How lucky for me! I've found myself a nest full of rebels! Now, I have to see what they are up to and what information I can pass Boodra. Master will be pleased, Tavlia considered with a smile. She sidled up to Finn and said, "Alderaan? You are from there?"

Meanwhile...

A ship, small of stature and disreputable in appearance, slipped gracefully through a steam of stars.
She was more or less sturdily built, more than her appearance would lead you to believe.
And she was on more or less legal business... depending on whom you asked...
She was the Heart of Oak, and she was on her way to Yavin.

Her holds, which were more or less empty, aside from some medical supplies, still smelled faintly of her previous cargo - perfumes and spices... stolen at a reasonable price from some Correllian goon, and delivered to her patron of arts - Shemira, a minor Hutt boss. One of the few female Hutts in the sweet trade, and a smart one at that - only stole from those she could defeat, or had someone set up to take the heat, and only things that, while profitable, were less likely to get her pilots killed by imperials with twitchy fingers.

Her pilot slept lightly in the cockpit, feet up on the helm, chair tipped back, and green tattooed lekku drooping towards the deck. Azaria T'dartha, smuggler and occasional Rebel, snored loudly as her ship raced through space at the speed of light.

Ding! Exclaimed the communications panel.

"Mmfffhh"

Ding ding! The over eager computer comes loudly.

"Hmnnn? What is it..." Azaria croaked, dry tongue sticking unpleasantly to her teeth and the roof of her mouth. "If this is another message from Burli I will loose my mind, I **** you not."

Shaking herself awake, the green Twi'lek acknowledged the incoming message and leaned back in her chair to listen to the audio message.

"Good day, Captain T'dartha. You may not recognize my voice, but we have met before. I am employed by the same company for whom you are delivering supplies, RA Industries... A friend of a friend of a mutual friend of ours has a job that needs doing, and word on the street is that you need a job after you finish your delivery. If you're interested, look me up when you get here."

'look me up when you get here'? Well, wasn't that nice and vague... Azaria played the message again, twice, but still had no clue as to whose voice she was listening to.

"Sith spit! If its a mutual friend, then there are only two people it could be - I'll have to ask them if they know who this dingo is." She muttered, storing away the message.

"Hey Ding," she said to the computer, "we have another job! Maybe if you don't screw anything up, I'll get you some new solder. Would you like that?"

Ding ding ding!

She patted the computer and smiled, pushing herself back into her chair and propping her feet up.

'RA Industries? The Rebels really need to come up with a less obvious code name.' she thought with a yawn as she dozed back to sleep. She wasn't due to get to the hospital ship for another four hours, she could certainly nap until then...

Things happened so fast that before Luke had managed to fire a single shot, most troopers were already dead or dying. He fired a couple of shots to keep the troopers occupied, but none of them found their mark, he then felt a tug at his legs and fell down next to Kaj, their faces almost touching.

It had been instinct and perhaps memories of the past that made her try to protect Luke. He was so close, death pelting the man they were crouched behind, and there had been a moment, a distinct moment where everything seemed to focus. This was not coincidence, being there with him again. So many memories, so much loss that she was caught in its thrall and became disjointed from what was happening.

She recognized the threat, respected it, and realized if he hadn't acted, she could have been killed. Distractions were not part of her mission, but they had seemed to be occurring with increasing rapidity. She stared at the man who represented the worst that could be, the worst of them all, and she silently urged Luke to press forward, just a little more.

"Liar..." Luke whispered, and applied more pressure to blade and the men's neck...

She waited, breathless, until she heard someone else speaking. It had been a blur until she could make out the words. They weren't going to kill this one. Granted she hadn't been either, but they were debating. This one hadn't been there, he hadn't pulled a trigger.

“Maybe we can send someone a message.” He looked around the others in the bar. “Anyone got anything they'd like this guy to pass on to his people...?”

There was only one message an Imperial would understand. She had watched it being delivered over and over again. It had been a smoking hole in the centre of a forehead, or the giddy laughter that followed cruelty, death and destruction. They ruled with an iron fist, and she felt squeezed more and more with each passing day.

"I have...” Finn added quietly. Walk away. Live.”

Kaj stood up and eyed the man speaking, swallowing carefully as she glanced at Luke. "Quit his job?" She laughed harshly. "This isn't a job. It's his life." She stared down at the frightened man, watching for the moment when the quivering would change, the glint would return, his advantage pressed to kill one or all of them. "And we all have had wives, and husbands, children... family..." she spit out the last. Looking at the man, she reasoned, "He's seen us, and you expect him to simply run away? He's afraid now because his friends are gone. And he's alone." She leaned down into his face cruelly. "How long would that last if we let him leave?" She looked at the people left in the bar. "If we let him live?"

Shrugging, she turned back to them all knowing if it came to it, Luke would slit the man's throat before he could come at her. How she knew, she didn't exactly know, but it had been something she had seen in his eyes. "The only message I'd send would be scrawled across his chest in bloody letters." Children of Alderaan. It was heinous what the Empire had done. "They would do the same to us." She muttered softly, "They have done to same to us..." Clearly, the only good Imperial in Kaj's mind was a dead Imperial.

Alika walked over and knelt beside Luke and the trooper and drew her DC-17. "If you really want to send the Imperials a message, then I've got an offer for you," she said, her voice modulated by her helmet's speaker. She pressed the muzzle of her blaster to the man's temple and clicked off the safety. The man tensed, but dare not move with a vibroblade pressed to his neck. "What business does the Empire have on Nar Shadda?" The man looked up at her definitely and remained silent. Alika pressed harder. "I'll ask one more time. What business does the Empire have with the Hutts?"

That did it. She saw the flicker of surprise in the man's eyes and knew she had him. Those eyes grew wide as he realized what she was doing, but it didn't matter. The battle of wills was over in a moment, and Alika had what she wanted. She squeezed the trigger and the man's body convulsed once, then lay still. "Anyone interested in the location of a shipment of weapons the Imps are here to collect?"

Luke's eyes shot daggers at Finn and all Luke wanted to do was end it right then and there, but then Finn spoke again.

Walk away. Live.”

'Was this guy insane?' Luke was thinking. This trooper knew all of their faces and from there it would only a a small step away from identifying everyone. Luke could see the headlines already, a picture of them all in the WANTED section. And that on the first day of their new mission. Smooth.

It was heinous what the Empire had done. "They would do the same to us." She muttered softly, "They have done to same to us..." Clearly, the only good Imperial in Kaj's mind was a dead Imperial.

Luke's mind was completely in line with that of Kaj. 'Give no mercy for you shall receive none', was the saying that he remembered from one of the holovids he watched as a kid. The fight had indeed gone out of the trooper, he knew his fate was now in the hands of those standing over him. The sharp smell of fresh urine entered Luke's nostrils as the trooper lost the control of his bowels amidst the fear of dying... It disgusted Luke, this trooper was nothing more than a coward and it made him want to end this trooper's sorry existence even more...

lika walked over and knelt beside Luke and the trooper and drew her DC-17. "What business does the Empire have on Nar Shadda?" The man looked up at her defiantly and remained silent. Alika pressed harder. "I'll ask one more time. What business does the Empire have with the Hutts?"

The trooper's reaction surprised Luke. Defiance? That was a sudden change of heart. Up until now this trooper would've done anything to save his sorry skin. Or maybe it was the knowledge that he was going to be dead anyway. If not tonight then in the morning when he had to report for duty and be held responsible for the death of his teammates. Had this man now suddenly have come to accept his fate?

That did it. She saw the flicker of surprise in the man's eyes and knew she had him. Those eyes grew wide as he realized what she was doing, but it didn't matter. The battle of wills was over in a moment, and Alika had what she wanted. She squeezed the trigger and the man's body convulsed once, then lay still. "Anyone interested in the location of a shipment of weapons the Imps are here to collect?"

And that was that. The trooper dead, Luke took away the vibro blade and sheathed it. He stood up and let out a heavy sigh. But then anger again set in as he looked at this masked female.

"He was mine to kill..." he stated.

Kaj didn't even flinch at the sound. She'd heard it enough from her own weapon and in her dreams to no longer fear it. She was surprised, however, that this female had stepped in.

"He was mine to kill..." he stated.

Wendo was by Luke in an instant, his tone unbelievably cold. If she hadn't heard the same from her own lips, she might have flinched. How far they had come from Corellia, and how many agonies had they each suffered? Luke Helios had a heart back then, but she wasn't sure about it now. It must now be buried deep. However, that wasn't her mission; protecting him certainly was. The irony of the tables being turned full circle weren't lost on her. She kept Luke in her periphery, and kept her eyes on the others.

There would be no consideration of Hutt weapons, no discussion, at least not on their end, until this dispute over death had been completed. Her weapon had been holstered, but her hand rested on the butt of it, wondering if their tenuous alliance forged in the blood of Imperials might survive this challenge. She waited, highly aware of his location, even his posture. He was tension held in check, and all she waited for was the simplest of movements.

Tavlia's heart skipped several beats. I have hit the jackpot! Boodra is going to be so proud! Now, I just have to follow these rebels for a bit and get the plans to him and I will be so well rewarded. Of course, I cannot show interest or too much interest because I am playing the runaway slave. So, how in the world do I get myself on this ship and with these people?

Tavlia looked at Finn and Harm, hoping that they would say something to help her get onto the ship. In the meantime, she took the holster from the deceased imperial and strapped it around herself and sheathed the blaster that she had been given. She started to change her demeanor to a nervous one, "Uh, I don't . . . know . . . . I, I, I could be . . . . Oh, this could be . . . so . . . bad . . . ."

Finn sighed. Any death was a waste, but this one? Obviously the woman had got whatever information she'd wanted, but it was a pity - he'd been looking forward to sending Imperial Intelligence off on a wild goose chase, trying to track down a non-existent organisation he'd left a fake trail for. Would have kept them tied up for months. He'd have to find another patsy for that one.

Still...

"Anyone interested in the location of a shipment of weapons the Imps are here to collect?"

Two things interested him - one, denying the Imps a cache of weapons, but two...

"Is there any money in it" he asked.

What? He had family. Food costs. And he wasn't that particular where the money came from, but away from the Imps would do nicely.

RIxar perked up at this question. He was in dire need of money and after this brawl, the imperials would probably be looking for his head here shortly. Then of course, weapons were always good.

"What would be in it for me?" Rixar asked.

Alika stood, her legs a bit shaky after the exertion it took to use the Force to probe the trooper's mind. She flipped the butt of her blaster around so Luke could see the power selector. It was set to stun. "If you want to fillet him, go right ahead. I'm just going to stand over there so you don't get blood on my armor..."

"Is there any money in it" Finn asked.

"What would be in it for me?" Rixar asked.

Alika looked between Finn and Rixar, "There's credits, if you don't mind a little piracy...and possibly an employment opportunity if things go well."

Meanwhile, Harm saddled up beside Tavlia and wrapped a heavy arm around her shoulders. "Don't worry, sweetheart, they won't hurt you now," he said, before leaning close and whispering in her ear, "You're a great actor. Ever considered being a holovid star?"

Tavlia gave a dirty look at Harm and wiggled out from under his arm with the ease of a wet snake. Turning to face him, she pulled out her hand and slapped Harm with an open palm. "How dare you mock my fears and pain! I am not about to be taken again!"

If this had been a cartoon of farm animals Luke would have been the bull that snorts out in anger with white puffs of air blowing out of his nostrils.

The already built-up anger was now pushed to its utmost limit and Luke could barely contain it. He stood there shaking, grasping on to the last energies of self-control he was sure he still had somewhere. But he failed. His rage exploded from him like a volcanic eruption. "Ahhhrgh!" He screamed and stepped up to her until his face was mere centimeters away from her masked face: "Don't assume that with your Force sensitivities you are better than me. Don't patronise me ever again, or you will regret it!"

"Why not," Rixar said. "Work is good and it beats waiting for the Imperials to come get me for this."

"Rixar Seer, bodyguard mostly." He said doing a little bow.

Kaj stood to one side of Luke, close enough to lend a hand if necessary, but far enough away to stay out of their way. She was tempted to move closer and settle a hand on his arm, but she wasn't sure at this point if it would make him lash out at her, or calm him down. She simply didn't have that type of insight into the man. All she knew was she hoped it would get settled soon; if the woman wanted to pay for services rendered, then Wendo could see no problem with such an arrangement.

Looking at the others in the bar, it seemed that the ones still standing were of a similar mind. She nodded at them, dividing her attention between the volatile pilot and the rest. It wasn't likely that there'd be any official authorities coming by in this place unless they were looking for a handout, but it would be best if they found a less littered place to discuss the details. She moved no closer to Helios, but did take a step into his peripheral vision.

Alika looked between Finn and Rixar, "There's credits, if you don't mind a little piracy... and possibly an employment opportunity if things go well."

“If by piracy, you mean Imperial targets, you can count me in. If it's civilian traders – it'll depend on which line... Finn Varden. Engineer... From a family of traders.” He wasn't averse to picking on the competition, but he was in this to make money for his extended family, not to steal from them.

Tavlia then sidled up to Finn and told him, "Thank you for your help. How can I ever thank you?"

Finn regarded the woman. In his mind, he still had her pegged as a grifter. As such, he had no idea what he could believe and was safer not to trust anything she said or did.

“Tell me something real, just one thing, about you. Not your name, not who you work for or why you're here. Nothing that important. Favourite colour, favourite food – anything. You pick, but this one thing has to be honest and true. Just one...”
