Quin watched as everyone grabbed a piece of Nathan. There didn't seem to be very much left over, well not anything that a red blooded hetero male would likely want to latch on to. Quin decided to make sure that Nathan's skull wasn't cracked by contact with the ground.

Eve watched as the rest of crew tried to lift Nathan. "Why don't you take that Nigel bloke? I can get Nathan." It was ironic, at least to the burly former resident of St. Mary Mead, that months before in this very village the man had kissed him. Now he was, well a vegetable. Something in Eve told him he'd never see Nathan again.

"Which way to Penny's?" he asked ignoring the still ringing cell phone for the moment.

Grace pulled her backpack off and rummaged for a moment, producing a set of delicate watchmaker's screwdrivers and a slender wallet of other tiny tools.

“Here – it's only on loan, mind,” she threw them over to him

Gavin's eyes moved from each member of the group in no set pattern, and while his attention had been on Derowen as he awaited a response to his comments he did glimpse another one of the women tossing several small objects in his direction. He quickly realized their benign nature and stretched out each hand to receive them, managing to catch each with uncommon grace (no pun intended) and skill; a feat which could suggest to any onlookers that this man possessed sharp reflexes and superior hand-eye coordination in addition to his keen mind. He was an accomplished martial artist and electronic gamer, two disparate hobbies and neither of which would be known to anyone present aside from himself. Perhaps Merlin would know, and if he had been profiled by his former captor, that information was now unretrievable - not such a bad thing really, anonymity was after all one of the best means of protection.

"What's this..?" he asked as he looked down at the objects that had been tossed his way, then simply added an "Oh." after he had a moment to examine them. He smiled and winked in Grace's direction, showing his appreciation for her assistance as well as her preparedness.

Punkin Thomas gave Eve a lop-sided grin. "Oh, Double 0, you could flip Freddy for carrying Nigel, he's already got him. And we, as a group are struggling with Nathan, although your offer is truly appreciated." She avoided his gaze as she had along. Fred, now dubbed Freddy, had been distant, and completely untouchable by anyone but Wen. His disdain was obvious, and his belief that he was truly above it all, above THEM all, might come to a crashing and disappointing conclusion. That's what made the name so inappropriate. But perfectly so.

Taking a look around to get her bearings, she thought she remembered how to get to Penny's. Fairly sure, anyway. Exchanging a look with Grace at the other end of Nathan, Punkin acknowledged that glance. What was going on inside of Grace's head? What had been? That breakdown she had in that room with Punkin holding her was a clear indication that something very deep was happening. There might be time enough to find out what... and then again, perhaps not.

Punkin felt no time to enable her to process anything or to breathe for that matter. Just time enough to carry, and move, and continue. Because one chapter closed, another one was waiting to be written, and it didn't demand understanding. Just action.

"Three," said Punkin and waited to lift with the rest. Glad to be with them. Glad to be working together with them. Glad to be home.

Derowen watched the others figuring out who was going to carry whom with a gentle smile on her face. Her mind was working hard though. Why weren't there any planes this close to the airports.. How come it felt like Spring.. when were they...

She blinked as Gavin's words finally penetrated. "Right, access. ID. All that good stuff. We can sort that out shortly. Right now, getting into cover is more important. Especially since that thing looks a little worse for wear."

The pod was beginning to smoke ominously. Wen began to walk across the field towards the gate that lead to the lane so that she could open it for the others.

It wasn't easy making their way to the back garden of Esther Pennyfeathers house, but they managed without dropping Nigel or Nathan. Too badly. Or without being spotted. Which was slightly harder. Especially since the pod exploded when they were part way down the lane leading towards Weston Patrick.

Once they were inside the garden, Wen relaxed slightly. She looked around the flower beds thinking about where Penny would hide a spare key. The house looked as though nobody had been inside it since.. whenever it was that they left. Wen wrinkled her nose slightly at the dirty dishes in the kitchen. If it was as long as she thought it had been, the kitchen wasn't going to be nice to deal with at all.

Tucked into a clump of daffodils and tulips was a small stone. Derowen grinned when she saw it. "Slightly out of place and in plain sight." she said as she picked it up and turned it over. Nestled into a space was a simple yale key. Wen pried it out with her thumb and inserted it into the lock of the back door. With a quick twist and a push, the door opened.

Wen winced. However long it had been since they'd been away, it was long enough for mold to consume the uneaten meal they had left behind. The house smelt stale, unloved.

Quickly she ushered everyone into the kitchen and from there into the house properly.

"Secure the house." she ordered simply, trusting that the team would swing into action. Looking around in the small pretty living room, she tried to think about where Penny would tuck those things that would make her life easier.

"Talk to me darling." she whispered, running her fingers over surfaces. "Where did you put Torchwood... where are we..."

TAG - all.

When the answer came to her, all Derowen MacFie could do was laugh and lean against a wall. "Little old English Lady." she explained. As if that really did explain all.

Striding back into the kitchen, Wen opened the door to a tall cupboard tucked into a corner. The Pantry. Shelves stacked neatly with canned food filled the space. All it took was finally stepping into the cramped space and closing the door. One of the back walls slid to one side exposing a bank of electronic equipment.

"Found it!" She yelled.

TAG all.

Derowen wrote: Quickly Wen ushered everyone into the kitchen and from there into the house properly.

Rubin, Punkin, Camron, Quin and company had crab-walked Nathan through the brightly painted, but rancid kitchen, edging his lank body passed a table with dark blue-green mold gardens blossoming from plates and tea cups.

He remembered a meal here. There had been explosions. Rift Chick had shown up. They'd left Pennyfeather's tidy little council cottage post haste. His memory blanked at that point.

Terror settled into the pit of his stomach as if something truly horrible had transpired afterward. He tried to remember, but an instinct took over. Nathan first. Pry into his loss of memory later. He abruptly stopped thinking about what had happened.

First, Nathan was hauled into the little living room replete with old lady porcelain bric-a-brac and small framed pictures on green and white paisley wallpaper. The tall man was laid over an undersized overstuffed couch. His head dangled heavily over one couch arm causing his neck to bend dangerously backward.

Nathan was then hauled into a small bedroom. Bed covers were thrown aside like someone had left meaning to tidy up but never returned. The bed fit Nathan's length better. He was laid there and carefully covered.

As the rest of the team hauling Nathan straightened, seriousness came to their faces. They moved off as wary as cats to search the house.

Meaning to help secure the house, Rubin's right hand habitually crossed to his shoulder holster. He touched only his tattered blue shirt. He looked down perplexed. He'd lost his father's snub nosed .38, holster and all. Somewhere.

Something warned him not to think about it. He looked around for a weapon. Next to the bedroom door was an antique chest of drawers capped with glass. An intricately woven lace doily was sandwiched between the glass and a sheet of royal purple cloth. A long handled brass bed warmer lay on its side on top of the glass. The bed warmer placement made Rubin think the antique was there more as something handy for Esther to wield in an emergency.

Rubin hefted the heavy brass implement experimentally. Satisfied with its weight, he offered it to Camron who stood next to him and seemed to be looking around for a weapon too. "Definitely a skull cracker," he said to her. He smiled. "Just check your target before swinging, okay?"

As they walked, Punkin watched, observing each person's actions and reactions as they went. Rubin was pensive, but moreso than usual; there still was no explanation as to why he had lost consciousness. From what he looked like, that information wouldn't be coming out anytime soon either.

Grace was shakey, not overly so, nor obviously neither, but her darting eyes made Punkin more nervous than not. Quin was pensive, but something else was eating him. Where she had noticed his attention to Grace in a regular manner, for now, he didn't even steal a glance at her and was content to move Nathan in a brooding silence.

Once Nathan had been deposited... twice... Punkin nodded at each of them and moved off. Secure the house was such a general term, but, if she recalled her media references, that meant making sure that each room was cleared of any potential threats and possibly useful items.

"Be careful, Rubin," Punkin called over her shoulder. She hadn't forgotten what had happened when Rift Chick had happened on the scene. Not at all. She had stolen Wen, been focused on returning home and was hopping all over the house. He was well and truly capable of self-defense, but might have a few guards down around the woman. Her lips curled up in a smile and she looked both ways before heading up the stairs further.

"Found it!" Wen yelled.

Punkin's foot hovered over the next step and instead turned back towards Wen's voice. "Coming!" Punkin sang and thudded down the flight to the kitchen.

Quin had hoped for a few moments to get to the bottom of the multiple texts, voice messages and missed calls on his phone. He heard Wen's voice and knew that he had to react and not hide himself away with his thoughts and worries.

He headed for the kitchen wondering just what it was that Wen had found.

Rubin decided that since there was no other handy weapon in Nathan’s bedroom he'd have to use his bad breath against any lurking danger. He was following the Rift Chick out of the bedroom when Wen shouted eureka from the kitchen. Punkin and Quin immediately broke off securing of the cottage to head that way.

Rubin reached up to touch Camron's shoulder, muscular under her street urchin outfit, but hesitated, given she was armed with a heavy bed warmer and prone to reflexive mayhem. Instead of touching her, he said, "Let's see what Wen has found. If it tries to kill her, bop it with your brass shillelagh. If we survive, I promise to tell you more about me."

> tag Camron

Rubin entered the brightly painted kitchen. The intense new guy, Gavin, sat at the table. He had shoved aside the soiled dishes with their rotting orts and was working with the Grace’s loaned tools on what looked like a version of Nathan's PDA.

Guessing Gavin had a knack for electronics, Rubin said, "Come on. Wen may need your skills with whatever she's found."

> tag Gavin

Rubin looked around. Its white lace curtains neatly secured to the sides by shiny yellow cloth loops, the outside door was closed. Painted a cheery green, the pantry door in the corner was slid shut. The living room doorway had no door. The team, most holding personal or scavenged weapons, crowded in through it. All were looking around with battle hardened wariness. The kitchen stank of mold and sweat. There was no sign of Wen.

Rubin called loudly, "Wen? Where are you?"

Quin wrinkled his nose hoping that what he was smelliing was down to the kitchen and not him or his companions. He would have cheerfully killed for a shower or a long hot bath.

Poor Penny would have been horrified to see the state of her house and for a brief moment he felt a deep sadness for the woman. She had obviously survived a lot in her time and her end at the hands of the Wolf and his minions had been horrible.

Quin was suprised at his emotions. Normally he couldn't really empathise with other people. His whole life had been about looking after number one, no one else had ever mattered. Until he'd met up with Torchwood. Wen was like the mother he'd never really had, the others were like siblings, well maybe not Grace, no way could he think of Grace as being his sister.

Totally out of character he wanted to hug them all including Gavin and he didn't even know the man.

He looked round trying to see where Wen had got to. Quin knew she was oK the sword fragment would have told him otherwise.

Wen looked around the equipment that Penny had hidden in her pantry of all places with a brilliant smile. She touched a couple of the screens, activating the link to the main computer. The familiar tendrils of energy and light spread across the screens, moving languidly to begin with then seemingly more agitated as if it was aware that she was back.

Well, it probably was, all things considered.

"Hello darling." Wen whispered. "I'm home."

Frowning, she hunted for the control that would allow her to open the door without triggering the panel to slide back into place again. It took long enough that she could hear the others looking for her.

"Pantry!" she yelled, barely glancing back over her shoulder. Her fingers never stopped tapping on the screens in front of her as she activated several remote systems to allow them back into the main Hub computer. With a smile she also discovered the subroutine that would allow the others into the small space.

Opening the door, she squinted slightly in the sudden rush of sunlight. Peering around the door, she grinned happily.

"Oh computer gurus... look what I found. Esther Pennyfeather was a devious old cow. And I love her for it."

TAG - all

Her nose wrinkled again. "Clean up." she muttered. "Anyone who hasn't got anything to do, let's clean this bloody place up please."

Hovering a little, Punkin stood and waited. Crinkling her nose up, she personally thanked whatever oddity existed in her physical makeup to ensure that she had no allergies to mold. Or anything else, for that matter. It didn't, however, make her immune to nausea caused by the horrible stench.

It had been distasteful as they passed through it, but now, in the middle of the kitchen, it clung to her clothing and up into her nostrils. Nodding, as her mouth pursed, she looked around for an apron, rubber gloves and cleaning materials. So what if she looked like a mock up of Dr. Frank N Furter? Pink latex and white apron became him too...

"I'll look around for some more cleaning materials," she said, trying to breathe more through her mouth. "And garbage bags... lots of 'em." Turning, she looked at the rest. "Who's up for a little cleaning?"

Rubin's smile at finding Wen safely tapping away behind the pantry door vanished. She'd complimented Esther in past tense. He felt icy cold. He looked down at his tattered blue long-sleeved shirt and stained beige pants. Dried blood. Filthy grime. Black soot. What had happened? As he tried to remember, he struggled to suppress a huge shiver of utter revulsion. His shoulders knotted painfully against the effort.

Punkin fetchingly pursed her kissable lips as she surveyed the kitchen.
Punkin wrote:"I'll look around for some more cleaning materials," she said. "And garbage bags... lots of 'em." Turning, she looked at the rest. "Who's up for a little cleaning?"

Relieved to have something to focus on, Rubin said laconically, "Ordinarily, I wait until every dish in the house is used before cleaning up...but since this is for Esther...."

Unbidden, a lump blocked his throat. He swallowed several times trying to get his voice back. It didn't return. Struggling with emotion, he pointed toward the sink and did a quick pantomime of scrubbing a plate.

He lifted with both hands the soiled plates Gavin had shoved together and took them over to the sink. Another stack of something was hidden under a thick carpet of fuzzy green mold in the sink. He set the stinking, teetering stack in his hands on the sink's tiny counter. He took a short breath and held it as he fished one of many moldy plates out of what turned out to be ice cold moldy water.

Exhaling, he said, his words coming out in a rush, "Opening the kitchen door might encourage the stench to leave." He nodded toward a pert little window with lacy white curtains in front of him. "And if someone could figure out how this kitchen window opens...."

Fred had placed Nigel into the corner of the living room, propped up into a relaxed sitting position. It would keep him out of the way, for the moment. He looked around the room quickly, flashes of memory swarming his brain, as he did so. He hadn't been here long, yet his brief stay was a solid memory. Even if it was only solid because it contained Derowen.

He crossed over to the window, and peeked out through the curtain. He watched a sparrow hop across the garden, before stepping away from the window. The quiet put him on edge. He'd spent to much time running and fighting to return to a dull and quiet life. It was a good job he worked for Torchwood.

He passed the kitchen which was far to packed for his liking. Finding food could wait. He checked out the few other rooms on the bottom floor. Nope, nothing seemed to of been here in a while. The few tracks he saw in the inches of dust, were from the team. He didn't bother going upstairs, as most of the dust had been dislodged by the team as they hauled Nathan upstairs.

He headed back in time to hear the annoying little Punkin moaning about finding cleaning supplies. It was about time she actually did some work. He looked over to see Derowen cramped into the pantry, a strange glow highlighting her. Fred Grinned and leant up against the doorway.

Without really looking back over her shoulder, Derowen called back to Fred.

"Like the view?" She was filthy. Clothes torn, bruises showing from the falls into and against furniture and her hair was still out of it's normal plait. With an impish grin she finally glanced back at him leaning against the doorway with his arms crossed.

TAG - Fred.

She stepped out of the small room, thankful that the door wouldn't close on it again. There wasn't quite enough space for everyone and she would rather have checking intel and making sure they were in good shape.. or not..

TAG - anyone heading into the 'pantry'.

Once Derowen didn't have anything to actually do, she stopped. Her eyes scanned over the small living area that had been home to one of her best friends for years. She bit her lip. Hard. The emotions of Esther's death couldn't be ignored anymore, and her cheeky mood vanished.

"Oh Penny.." she whispered, reaching out for one of the knick knacks on a table, picking it up and turning it over in her hands. "That bloody bas*ard..."

Grace scampered down to the pantry, glad of the interruption. The look Punkin had been giving her stank of curiosity with a soupçon of pity. She neither wanted nor needed either, plus whatever was happening down there might just keep her mind off of the spiral it would end up in if it wasn't occupied.

"Oh computer gurus... look what I found. Esther Pennyfeather was a devious old cow. And I love her for it."

“What have you got there?” Grace asked, nudging her way through the opening then gasping in surprise. The juxtaposition of the olde worlde villager house against the contents of the pantry were like walking from Pride and Prejudice into The Matrix. In minutes she was playing with the motion sensitive screen, pulling the displays around as she checked the updates.

“Good news – the clear skies aren't as bad as it looked,” she called over her shoulder. “Some unpronounceable volcano, apparently. On the up side, fewer spy planes to spot us coming in...” She waved her hand in the air, pulling another square of light across the screen. “Inbox is odd – several queries on how we are then nothing. Absolutely nothing...” Another wave, then she stood back.

“Bloody hell. It's May! It's bloody May. We've been away six months...”

That caught Derowens attention immediately.

"Nothing?" she queried, still holding onto the small figurine of a shepherdess as though it were made of spun glass. "How long ago did the queries stop?"

Despite not being particularly domestically inclined Quin did like things neat, tidy and above all clean. He started to clear away the rubbish. Fortunately there was a good supply of bin bags. He investigated several cupboards and grinned widely at a discovery.

"Dishwasher," he said. "The old girl might have been a pensioner but she had some mod cons."

Doing something. How perfectly therapeutic. Window open? It looked like a regular latch. But after Wen had opened the bank of computers with a special twist in the pantry, Punkin Thomas was a little reticent to touch anything right off. It LOOKED innocuous enough...

After all, she had suggested, and Quin and Rubin were doing. However did THAT happen?

Checking under the sink, she pulled out many cleaning supplies, and mentally wished Esther Pennyfeather well in the next incarnation, or wherever the damnable Wolf would have kept her holed up. The older lady had kept a very fine house, quite quaint on the surface, so a part of her strove to restore that feeling as well as she could. Cringing inwardly, she swallowed reflexively.

"I'm thinking that the fridge might be a bit done too, Quin," and wore the pink latex gloves with pride. The apron she found had been something with mini pansies on the front, and frills all around it. All to keep up appearances, she imagined.

Cleaners to give that fresh scent and towels to wipe up after the washing. It seemed that they worked efficiently and quietly, and she was aware that preoccupations were keeping it that way. Not her place to notice or ask. But the offer?

"I would suggest whistling while we work, but somehow, I suspect it would go horribly, horribly wrong..."

Eve had found an apron, a pink frilly arpon with white lace on the side that looked horribly silly on his massive frame, and was already beginning the process of scraping mouldy food off into bags, looking faintly disgusted by the sight.

"Can we put the good china in the dishwasher?" he asked If he remembered his childhood correctly, and parts of it were blurred behind attempted ballet lesons and learning to knit, china cups did not go into the dishwasher.

"Check the bottom, if it doesn't say dishwasher safe it probably isn't. Anything fragile looking is best washed by hand." Quin was amazed that he, reputably tough, was taking an interest in washing up. He grinned at Eve.

"I don't make a habit of this," he said, "but I think we owe it to Miss Pennyfeather to take care of her things."

Fred chuckled lightly at Derowen's comment and nodded his head. He watched as the others started to clean or play with the hardware in the pantry. He felt apart from the team, as they worked around each other, yet found to his surprise that it irked him a little. All those years alone, and he still missed being part of the team.

He turned around and left the kitchen, finding Derowen clutching a figurine to her chest gently.
"Your lucky," Fred said across the room to her. "I don't have anything but memories to remind me of Hugh."

Esther Pennyfeather's bright little kitchen was packed with the team busily cleaning.

Well, most of them were cleaning.

Derowen and Fred talked. Grace tapped on the monitor in the pantry. Gavin's concession to cleanliness was to raise his PDA and Grace's tools as Eve--garbed in a ridiculously small and frilly apron--wiped the tabletop with a moist cleaning towel. Punkin's delicious curves wiggled and waggled as she firmly scrubbed all surface with a sponge soaked in strong smelling detergent. Camron packed the dishwasher and to her credit pushed the door shut instead of side kicking it. Quin stood stiffly, bent backward from the hip, his face pinched, holding open a bin bag as Rubin loaded it with rotting vegetables from the refrigerator.

Rubin, hands shoved in plastic bags for makeshift gloves, hit a biggish rectangular block under reeking heaps of moldy leaf lettuce. He pulled it closer, scraping the soggy lettuce muck off a clear wrapper. Stacked in layers of 4 several layers deep, Her Nibs smiled regally from blue and pink, neatly banded 20 pound notes.

Rubin handed the block toward Quin. "Toss this out, I suppose?"
