As The Monarch spun wildly off it's course into The Black, and more and more of it died, the crew and passengers hung onto the hope that it could be rescued. That they could survive.

With a splutter, all of the engines died. Kynthia began swearing in every single language she could think of, and then started making up words when she ran out of the ones she already knew.

She wanted to weep. They were all possibly going to die and it was her fault. She was the Captain. By default admittedly. She happened to own the ship thanks to it's previous owner. But still. It was her fault.

"Bug?" she called. "Any luck on the shuttle?"

TAG - Bug.

Next she tapped the intercom to see if it was working. Thankfully there must have been some kind of charge left in the batteries.

"Listen up, this is the Captain." She said, trying to sound as calm as possible. "We're in a bit of trouble, but ain't nothin' to be getting all panicky like. Or we'll end up in a bit more than a spot. I might be needin' all of you to pull together an' help get us out of this."

She turned off the intercom and rested her head on her hands, trying to find something in the spinning maelstrom that wasn't going to make her feel sick. She blinked. Then stared intently.

"SAAAAMMM! " She yelled. There was something out there. She could almost feel it. Sense it. Some little thing had caught her attention, but she'd blinked and lost it.

"AMERI! Come here please! I need your eyes."

TAG - Sam, Ameri

Elsewhere in the ship, things began to fall off shelves as the spin continued.

TAG - all.

Odd cupboards opened as catches gave way. Then the scent of smoke began to make it's presence known..

TAG - all.

"Bug?" she called. "Any luck on the shuttle?"

"Yes, Captain." He had gone to the shuttle and had looked over everything. Having a lot less in the way of hours of service, the shuttle, though of the same vintage as the ship, was in much less abused condition. "I looked it all over, and it's gonna be just fine."

He bobbed his head in sign of his report ending and he went about to try and get anything at all done that might be of some help.

Ameri screamed as the engines died and the ship went dark for a moment. She couldn't help it- and it wasn't purely a scream of terror. There was anguish in there too, pain. Her hands were on her head before she even realized it.

And then she heard Kynthia calling her name. Still holding her head, blinking away the sharp stabbing pain, she staggered to the bridge. "Kynthia. We're in big trouble." Something else was going wrong. She could feel it- she just didn't know what it was yet.

Addy sat on the stairs as the engine suddenly stopped. He sat in the silence until captain's voice came over the speaker system. Addy stood quickly and moved up to the galley. Cupboards were opening as catches broke or have way and things were falling. But there was something else that was wrong.
Suddenly, Ameri staggered past him and distracted him for a moment. But he sniffed again. The scent was the fear of everyone who spent time on a ship. "Smoke." He could hear the captain on the bridge talking to Ameri.

He had too. He opened his mouth, "FIRE!" One word. A word of fear for anyone on the ship. "WELL...SMOKE!" Addy's voice shook as his voice trailed off.

Sam winced slightly when Kynthia yelled loudly a few inches from her ear. "Y'know I'm right here." She said, grumbling. "Didn't go no where." She spun around to try and see what Ky was talking about. Then Ameri came in, stating the utterly obvious, unless there was something more they didn't know about yet. "We know, Ameri...Ky thought she saw something, you've got the best eyesight, is there anything out there that you see?"

The black spun all around them, it was easy to forget that they were the ones spinning and not the universe. Sam took a deep breath, then looked at the stars again, trying to see what it was that needed to be seen. She didn't see anything, no glimmer of hope, no possible way of survival. It was a dismal, and very short, future that she saw, with the crew freezing to death, or running out of air on a shuttle crammed together with no room to breathe. Then, maybe, maybe she did see what Ky was talking about? "Merry, you see that? Looked like a ship, when we came about that time..."

Fire.

A very, very, very long time ago, it was what made the human race what it is today. Fire was energy, and energy has always had a transformative effect on the human race. Fire led us from caves into castles and towns. Steam turned towns into nations, and gave rise to the industrial nations that would feed a world of greedy consumers. The atom’s power turned a nation into a super power, and handed man the stars themselves with the alchemy of fusion and higher technology.

Fire had turned cavemen into space men, and it had only taken what amounted to a eye blink of the universe to do it. Mankind owed fire a great deal for what it had done for them. But right now, that price was Shamus ‘Shoddy’ McDonalds life.

What had started off as simply cutting the engines fuel lines had, as all things technical, turned into something a little more complicated. Just cutting the lines wouldn’t work, there were other items in the way: magnetic bottles, flow chargers, pre combustion compressors and a whole host of lesser engineering demons to please first. Cut the fuel, every single one of the sub systems shorts out, maybe in the five seconds it takes the reactor to die the containment bottle breaks open.

Ka-boom, the heavens gain a transitory star.

And so Shamus had hurriedly gone through the engine start up manual in reverse, shutting down everything that he could from his disconnected reactor. It had, in a way, been a more painful experience than he’d expected. He was intentionally killing a ship, a working piece of machined brilliance, and all on the roll of the dice they’d die fractionally later than right now.

And now karma had come back to bite him in the ass for taking a life.

Where the short had happened, or how it came to be was not Shamus concern as he back up against the engine rooms main hatch. Thick acrid smelling foam arced out of the arm length fire extinguisher in a hiss of compressed gas, lacquering the main engine hub in a caulk of protective oxygen absorbing nano polymer.

Or, that was at least what the label on the side of the bottle said. For all Shamus knew the bottle was a dressed up can of Miracle Whip for all the good it was doing, as yet again the white crust of foam began to blacken and bubble in places. He gulped, wishing he’d thought to bring a dosimeter with him: no one likes to get microwaved and he had a wish to have little Shamus's running around one day.

That was a scary thought.

He blacked up against the door, gave the engine another good blast of the now sputtering extinguisher, and fled like the coward he was. But no sooner had he opened the door than a gust of fresh air rushed in, fanning the flames buried under the foams embrace. He was just able to slam the door shut as the foam exploded outwards, flames dancing in every direction as some delicate part of the dead reactor came loose.

“I’m sorry...” he coughed, looking at the brightly lit interior of the engine space, as flames obscured everything “...I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry....”

He turned, rubbing the grit from his eyes and heard the screaming of the dreaded precursor of fire: smoke. He still heard Addy screaming the word as he rubbed at his smoke stained face.

“Aye there’s smoke Addy, and screamin’ll only use up the O2 faster.” He was momentarily shocked that he could sound that snide, but seeing as death was waiting in the wings why not indulge seeing as there really wasn’t a tomorrow “So why not laugh with me a tad, sing up the old songs and get ready to meet the ancestors of Earth That Were? We ain’t got now engine, we got one shuttle that ain’t got the legs to go anywhere useful, and we’re sure as hell outta time.”

He sat down on a chair that hadn’t been turned over, and eyed the spinning stars through the top side sky light. Every now and then as the Monarch rolled over, he could just see a patch of dark stars appear, a silhouette against starlight. It was sort of beautiful, in a abstract sort of way.

Looked pretty enough, like a cloud...looked like a ship which was impossible.

“So...” he said, watching the black silhouette appear again “...this is what hypoxia feels like...I was sorta hoping for a more R rated pre-death hallucination...”

The yell of Fire echoed through the ship quickly. It would be fair to say that everyone onboard went white. Fire in The Black was never a good state of affairs. The thing ahead of them would have to wait while they sorted out the initial problem..

How to stay alive.

"Sam" She said, thinking as fast as she could. "You got better lungs than me. Give 'em a yell that they need to get into the galley. We can stay safe this side. Vent the O2."

TAG - Sam

Kynthia grabbed Ameri and sat her down in the chair. She jabbed a finger at the tiny spot ahead of them. "There. That might be safety, somewhere we can hole up until we figure out how bad this is."

TAG - Ameri

She made her way through the doorway into the galley herself, swinging the heavy door shut on the back stairwell and turning the lock until it clicked into place. It was time to almost cut the ship in half. Again.

"Stay calm. Well. Calmer." she muttered, ignoring anyone else in the area's she was going through in order to get them into an area with air. And then get the fire out.

TAG - all.

Addy yelled it as a Shoddy ran into the galley. Addy was genuinely afraid for a moment as he got a good look at the mechanic. The man was covered in grit.

“Aye there’s smoke Addy, and screamin’ll only use up the O2 faster. So why not laugh with me a tad, sing up the old songs and get ready to meet the ancestors of Earth That Were? We ain’t got now engine, we got one shuttle that ain’t got the legs to go anywhere useful, and we’re sure as hell outta time.”

"I guess it is as good of time as any." His voice betrayed his statement. Addy did not want to die. He had gotten on board the ship to keep himself alive and out of jail.

“So...” he said, watching the black silhouette appear again “...this is what hypoxia feels like...I was sorta hoping for a more R rated pre-death hallucination...”

Addy laughed at the scott as his words sank in. "No one is dying...yet and the air will last for awhile."

Suddenly, The Captain ran through and slammed the heavy door to the back stairwell. "Stay calm. Well. Calmer."

Addy looked at the captain for a moment. "Captain, I know I am just a passenger, but I feel kinda pointless just sitting here, what can I do to help?" He would have said but the captain looked really busy so he just did not say anything and instead reached under his shirt and pulled out his flask and offered it to Shoddy.

Ameri sat, and stared out into the Black. Her eyes became unfocused as she gazed long and hard. She didn't even notice Kynthia leaving.

She finally spoke after long moments. "It's a ship. She's dead, lonely." Her head tilted. "She looks..... familiar..."

Kynthia suddenly focussed upon everyone in the galley. She nodded sharply at them.

"Secure this area, full atmo doors. We need to vent the aft of the ship into the black. Got to deprive that fire of what makes it keep on burnin'."

She was listing badly. And limping through space. Tarra had been very quiet, sitting in the corner of the galley as the others rushed around. The smoke really was fire. And Shoddy, kid Engineer and Scot with a hope, a prayer, and a wee dram of Scotch had tried to save her.

The Monarch. Her home for the past few months. And one, like almost everyone else she had known, about to abandon her. It wasn't just her, she reasoned with herself, but it still felt personal. Where she began and now where she ended up had made her grow, learn about herself, and question almost everything she had ever accepted.

She missed people. Serena Johnson had wanted to forget them, each one as they left her life, or she was forced out of theirs. But it had become more difficult to let them go. And close down her feelings once more. She felt connected to the Monarch is such a palpable way that it almost felt as though she were listing too. And perhaps, she mused to herself, she was.

She brought herself back to the moment, unsure as to how her mind could wander at a time like this. She reported what she knew. Aft was empty, she had come from there and everything was secure that needed to be. They were going to secure the doors to the Lounge. And there was a promise of safety? Two ways in, and as she looked at the faces of the people there, she asked, "Is everyone coming in here, Captain?" There had been a call for them. But some were still on the Bridge...

It had been a rush hatchet job, but it was done, and aparently just in time.

Bug had been working on the shuttle, unbolting every loose thing that could be lost and stowing anything that might turn handy, including an extra air scrubber, food and a water recycler. Most of these had been at his very limit to move, but he had gotten them aboard. He had removed enough of the other furnishings to allow the people of the Monarch to all fit aboard, if a bit sardine-ish.

Then the alarm had sounded. A fire in the engine room. A devestating conflagration that left to itself would cook off the reactor as well as the chemical fuels, causing the monarch to be a small short stellar event. The only answer would have to be to evacuate the air from the aft portion of the ship, isolating everything below and behind the galley and dining hall. That meant the hold, the aft upper passage, the lower deck including medical, and the passenger lounge and quarters as well as the room with the fire.

He got the hatch clear and then closed the inner and outer doors, making sure they were dogged for space. Then he got to the controls and ran the prestart sequence. In fourteen seconds he had it all ready but lit fires.

Hitting a button on the dash of the shuttle, Bug called out, "Captain Talland, I have the shuttle secured. Go for blow out."

Kynthia made sure that everyone was inside the area that would be protected when she pulled the lever. With a slight nod to Sam, she yanked the emergency vent system.

The ship shuddered as the heavy cargo door opened, a plume of flame escaping.. sadly taking with it a fair amount of their air.

The spiral of the ship also slowed, the cargo ramp acting almost like a rudder.

Kynthia sank back into one of the chairs with a heavy sigh.

"Right, sound off. Is everyone alright?"

TAG - all

She grabbed the mic and toggled it for the shuttle to check in with Bug. "Sing out Bug, Did you weather the escaping Fire alright? How does the ship look from your side?"

TAG - Bug

She looked across at Ameri with a hopeful look on her face after everyone had spoken. "Did I hear that you said you saw a ship out there?"

TAG - Ameri

The news was.. interesting. Kynthia shared a long glance with Sam. "What do you think?" She asked.

Addy moved in his chair. "Yeah, I'm fine." He knew that he did not have a job to do but he needed to be prepared for anything. He looked around as everyone seemed to be running to do things. He wanted to help but did not know what to do. "Captain," he finally said, "What can I do?"

"What do I think?" Sam asked, mulling over the situation. "I don't like it."

"Me neither. But don't see as how we got much choice." Kynthia replied, trying to see the ship clearly in the distance. "Do you think it's got power?"

"It might. Might as well check it out, there's nothing else we have to go with."

Kynthia continued to peer through the Black at the ship. "Wonder how long she's been sitting like that out here." She shook her head slightly. "How to get there? Do you think the shuttle's got enough to tow?"

"I think the shuttle's got enough to go over there, see if it's got power to start, and work from here..." Sam replied, rubbing the back of her neck. "I do not have a good feeling about this at all. Might ought to wear suits."

"You, me, Shoddy and Bug?" Asked Kynthia. It wasn't really a question. The rest of the crew and passengers were safe in the ship at the time, the fire had extinguished and if they were to have a fighting chance, they'd need some of them on the outside.

Sam nodded, "With guns. Actually...no guns for Bug." She paused for a moment. "Or Shoddy."

"Guns for the old soldiers then. Let's suit up an' I'll let Bug know we're goin' for a jaunt." Kynthia turned to the others on the ship. "Listen up, we're goin' to see if that safe haven out there is really a safe haven, or something less than. We ain't aimin' to be taking a stroll so we'll be back soon. Hopefully with help, or a ship what's working. You all sit tight. Keep an ear on transmissions."

***

Sam never liked evo suits. They never fit right, and if there was any sweat, they squeaked when moving. At least for Sam they did, she never knew for anyone else. And now she stood waiting for the shuttle to dock, to see what was in this ship that made her hair stand on end.

The ship was an old firefly. Mark three or four probably, by the position of her engines. There were no lights. No signs of.. well.. anything. She just stayed in space, floating in a small circle as if she'd been doing so for a very long time.

Kynthia piloted the shuttle around to the docking bay. There was one shuttle on it's usual place. The other.. well.. that was where damage could be seen. Scorch marks marred the edge of the pad. "Don't like that." Kynthia commented. "But 'tis convenient that there's only the one shuttle. Figure they left in a hurry?"

"Yeah, left in a hurry. Got a really bad feelin' about this, Ky." Sam replied, taking a deep breath.

Kynthia thought about the last sight of The Monarch. She was listing badly to one side, looking as though she was little more than salvage herself. "Let's dock." she said quietly. "Then see what we can do. Fasten up the suits everyone."

She maneuvered the shuttle into place, glad that the docking clamps were still working. The others checked seals and such on the suits.

Sam grunted, then put the helmet of the suit on. She hit the com. "I hate these things."

"You ain't the only one. Can you check my helmet?" Replied Kynthia.

Sam checked the helmet, then nodded that it was on, and let Kynthia check hers. "Alright, let's go ahead and do this."

With a whoosh of air the seal was made between ships. The emergency lighting system hadn't kicked in. Or had run out of juice a long time ago. The ship was in good shape. For something all abandoned.

"Power first. Then we explore. No splittin' up." Said Ky, very quietly.

Sam looked over at Ky. "Who in their right mind would split up on a death-trap?"

The small group walked slowly into the ship. Flashlight beams cut the darkness. She looked unused and unloved. As if the owners hadn't really cared about her before they left.

It wasn't until they nearly reached the engine room that they saw the first clue as to what had happened. A smear of old blood on the wall.

"Ah...what are you thinking that ain't from a simple cut?" Sam asked, looking around to see if there was more. There was a lot more.

"Not a hope." Kynthia sounded grim. Bug and Shoddy had become very quiet. But determined as they both made their way to the engine room and opening the door. At least in there all was.. clean. For an old firefly at least. Together they began to work on getting it powered up. There was some fuel left from when it had been abandoned. They'd be able to siphon more from The Monarch.

Kynthia and Sam stood in the corridor outside and looked at the smears and whorls of blood. "Ain't but one thing can have caused this." said Ky.

"Aye. We can't use this ship."

"Sam." Kynthia sounded determined. "We got no choice. Monarch's dead. Whatever this ship is called, we got to use her to get somewhere safe."

"Can we say cursed?"

"We aint' sure. Not until we find proof."

"What about reaver bait?"

"I ain't hearing anything onboard. What about we take a look around while the boys are busy?" Asked Kynthia. She didn't need to add 'Get rid of any bodies we might come across on the way'.

"Then we'll decide. It might be our only chance Sam. Reavers or no."

"Death-trap." Sam replied, but headed to go to the bridge.

"Alright. Death trap." Muttered Kynthia. Ahead of them the heavy door that separated the aft of the ship from the fore was closed tightly. "Think they was trying to stay in, or keep something out?"

"Keep something out. If there are ghosts, or worse, poltergeists, I'm blaming you." Sam replied, bristling slightly as she walked to the door. "Might need a torch to get in."

"Let's try by the other route, up the back stairs. That might be open." Kynthia walked over to the stairs leading down into the cargo hold. She could almost feel that they'd find much worse down there than they wanted to admit.

"We can always space anything we find..." Anyone, it wasn't something Sam wanted to say. This entire thing had her creep-o-meter busted beyond what the Monarch was.

Together they walked into the darkness below. Crates and other normal equipment were stacked neatly in their places. Webbing nets hung on their hooks. Along with something… not quite so nice. Kynthia gagged as proof was there in front of her.

"Reaver bait." she agreed.

"What did I tell you? Cursed." Sam replied, looking at the bodies which had been neatly mummified with terrified expression due to lack of oxygen and insects on the ship. She was glad she hadn't eaten today.

"I hope this is the worst we find." Kynthia tried to activate the airlock, shaking her head when it didn't respond. "Got to get the engine fired to get the batteries for the secondary systems active again."

She shared a glance with Sam. "Bridge. Let's see what this here ship used to be called."

"Whatever it is...it's more of a curse to keep the name than any curse of rechristening it."

The back stairs were dark. Kynthia cursed more than once as they stumbled up them. But was both relieved and terrified when they reached the top and found the door unlocked. "maybe they used this way to get to the shuttle. Them what was left." she said, peering into the darkness.

Sam used her light to illuminate the area. More stains of blood, but no more bodies. "It's going to take a month of sundays to clean all this gorram blood off."

"Ameri will have fits.. Sam, are we thinkin' what I'm thinkin' we're thnkin'?"

"Probably not. What're you thinking?"

"Take the ship, call it the Monarch an' sell the other one for scrap." Kynthia said without a pause. She was running her hands along the walls, feeling a subtle vibration in the ship that said that the engine was turning over.

"Well...it's better than nothing. The Monarch Junior."

Kynthia walked into the lounge and winced. There was more blood. Though this looked like only from one body.
"I can hear the engine." she said. "It'll give us a chance Sam. Chance to get away from sure death."

"Too bad we don't know any good exorcisms."

The passageway past the crew cabins was, thankfully, empty of Reaver sign. Just in case, they pushed open each door and looked inside. Evidence of a fast exit was everywhere. belongings scattered on the floor. Clothes half pulled from drawers.

"Shouldn't have wasted the time trying to save belongings and just gotten the hell out." Sam commented darkly.

"Wonder how many of them are down in the cargo hold now." Agreed Kynthia. "Still when they rabbited, they'd have pulled the Reavers with them, leavin' the ship here."

Something did not sit right with Addy. Maybe it was because the captain and the hard nosed first mate were off exploring the potential new ship or maybe it was the new ship itself. It was weird that a ship would be more or less intact just floating intact. Pirates and scavengers would have taken the ship if it was repairable. But...then Addy shuddered as a cold chill ran through him. "Reavers." He breathed. He looked up through the port hole at the ship and wondered what the team would find on that ship. He knew that it would not be good, but a ship was a ship and the one he was sitting on was dead and would not go any further.

Addy stood as the bad feeling came back. He stood in the galley toward the cockpit and wondered if there would be any surprises.

As the power came back to the derelict ship and lights began to flicker on throughout, it became apparent that there was going to be some serious clean up.

Kynthia headed for the bridge to see if there was control. She smiled when the boards showed most systems were working.

Sam explored through the rest of the ship, finding some gruesome evidence that not all the crew had been able to get away before Reavers had caught them. And also finding a frantic wav' that hadn't been sent.

Dated five years previously. This firefly had been drifting for five years, unfound in the Black.

Kynthia toggled the comm, hoping to be able to get through to The Monarch.

"Hoi, Ky here. Anyone there to pick up? We may have a.. replacement.. but it'll need some strong bellies an' a bit of elbow grease. She's workin' though, which is more than can be said for the old girl."

The boy shimmered into the bridge rubbing some small item with a rag. He was highlighted by patches of a rusty powder. and touches of grease and soot.

"We got her spinning, cap'n. She was in pretty good shape but for a bank of blown fuses. Looks like it was hit with some kind of ion beam or magnetic overload thingy. The whole place is a mess back there, what with the guys who didn't make it and all."

As he waited for answer, he blew on the item he had beeen polishing, revealing brass plate the size of a wedding announcement. Etched into the surface was a lot of scroll work and the title, "Registered Freight Carrier MINNOW."

"The Minnow." Kynthia looked at the plaque that Bug was holding. "Ain't a lucky name no more." She added, a thought jumping into her mind.

What if they just.. took.. this ship. What if they renamed it The Monarch? She looked over at Sam, then turned around slowly to look at the bridge. There had been no answer from the other ship, which made her next move much easier to choose.

She slid into the pilots chair and brought the bridge online. "All systems green. Let's get our folk onto this ship an' make sure they're all alright."

Slowly The Minnow righted herself and pivoted to face The Monarch. She wobbled slightly. Kynthia adjusted to compensate.

"Feels like the engines ain't quite workin' together Bug. But if'n she's been floating for a while, she'll be a bit touchy. What do you think?"

TAG - Bug.

TAG - Sam.

Smoothly the ship headed for the stricken Monarch. Kynthia winced audibly when she saw the damage on the outside of her ship. Plates had buckled and torn. Her nameplate looked forlorn.

Toggling the ship to ship comm, she tried to raise the others again.

"Monarch, this here is Kynthia. We got us a new ride. With air. And Engines. Get yourselves together."

TAG - Everyone on The Monarch.

Addy had heard the both messages and excitement grew the the mention of strong bellies unsettled him. But he ran down the stairs to get his stuff. It was packed within five minutes and in another three he was back in the galley with all of his stuff. As he sat back down in the chair he wondered where everyone else was. After a moment, he sighed. He was ready, and that was important.

"That's about right, Boss. Look at that gorram pivot! It's a wonder we weren't spun into goo. Yeah, Minnow seems solid enough, but she has a few twitches it'll take some time to find, between Shods and me. The clean up will be easier, once I get my mop."

He looked once more at the slowly spinning Monarch with the right pivotal randomly turning on its hydralics in a seemingly random pattern as its dying computer tried to compensate for problems that were and were not there. Now she was a lot of spare parts, but the Monarch would never be a ship again with the massive structural damage.

Ameri stood on the catwalk above the cargo bay. She was solemn.

"We can't just abandon the Monarch. She's our home! Why can't we use scrap from the other ship to repair her?" Ameri asked, her stance stubborn.

Tarra twisted her fingers in her baggage handles, sitting quietly and patiently as the Monarch continued its spin in the Black. They were moving, pulling up stakes and heading over to a new place, a new ship...

Looking around the place she had come to call home for the last few months, she let her mind wander. There, at that table... a former Captain had sat, chewing on his smoke and paying her some mind. Nutmeg. A small smile passed over her face, for just a moment.

But he left. And took a small part of Tarragon Hunter with him.

On Beaumont, she met someone else; a lot different. And slick. He could talk a good game, and to be truthful, she was never really sure how he felt or even IF he did. Not just about her, but about everything. He had more layers that she did. But he, too, was gone.

And took another part of Tarragon Hunter.

But now, she found someone else altogether. Or rather... he found her. Clinging to his bowl, she sat in the Galley, and swallowed. They were preparing to leave the Monarch, but somehow to her, it felt a lot more permanent than that.

Considering something, she knew before she even took another breath that she was taking him with her. Because what was true was that he had taken a part of her, a part of Serena Johnson that she simply would not do without. They would go somewhere safe. Somewhere special. Somewhere protected.

In the face of it all, she was going to take him back to Hera and work in a Companion House. To do what she was trained to do, and with someone who would work the land with his own two hands. A life. Something she had been searching for, and somehow found her.

How curious. The pain of leaving her new-found family was great, but the need to settle and be herself was even greater. She could have stayed... should have... but she hadn't known then what she knew now. She would discuss it with the Captain, arrange for something with the slave. Perhaps she could call for the other shuttle, and then...?

Then one chapter would close while another began.

With a thunk the Minnow docked beside the Monarch. Kynthia nodded grimly, knowing she would have to move quickly and not make any mistakes in order to keep this as smooth as possible.

Thankfully, the never ending use of bits of different ships made one thing easier. They weren't keeping the name Minnow, lest it bring about too many of the wrong type of questions. ones like "How did you kill them?" and "When are you bringing our ship back?". Those ones.

She activated the airlock between the ships.

"Sam, we got to get the Monarch's nameplate an' get it in place aboard this new ship. First off. Jus' because we're goin' to scrap the old one, don't mean we can get rid o' the name so easy. I don't want to go through the mess of paperwork. Everyone gets a cut of the salvage of the old girl. She done her time now I think." She mused to her second in command.

The door swung open into the monarch, bringing with it precious fresh air.
