Chuy Lo took hold of her head, looking deeply into the face he once knew and spoke softly, "Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from his son, the Lord Jesus Christ."

Kynthia stared at Chuy, seeing for a brief moment the face without the scars that had maimed him. Seeing the man he had been once. Remembering his voice... She blinked, and the image was gone. She almost knew, so nearly caught something from before. She closed her eyes.

But as deep, restful sleep overtook her senses, the elusive memory vanished.

The ancient firefly twisted as it homed in on The Monarch and The Fenris. The pilot had lost his wits long ago to the rage of the Reavers. He drooled from his destroyed mouth, the metal staples he had used to attach his flayed skin from his mouth to his cheeks glistened with the moisture. His unblinking eyes stared at the ships spinning together in the Black. He could no longer blink. Rusted spikes held his eyes open, and would until the day he died. He had few thoughts anymore. The poison that had destroyed his sanity had also, over time, whittled away at the intelligence he had once possessed. Now all was instinct. And it was telling him that there was sustenance ahead.

The Monarch plunged into darkness. The Reaver howled in anger, his cry picked up by the rest of those onboard his ship. Their screams and wails combined to create an unholy opera that sang into the Black. The chorus in counterpoint to the grind of the engines that bled radiation and smoke behind them.

He chose to continue. Instinct dictated that the Meat would still be warm.

Inside The Monarch, the crew held still. Selene had curled into a little sobbing ball of misery after careening down the stairs to be beside Maverick. He held her gently against him. His face stern as he considered all the options.

TAG - reactions?

The old ship drew closer, the skeletons and bodies that decorated it adding to an already odd silhouette. Pieces of other ships had been added, to provide more display space. The shadow touched the edge of The Monarch. If the Old Girl could have, she would have shuddered in fear as she rotated slowly.

Nobody dared move. All were silent now. Waiting. Thinking of how fast they could die before the insanity took them.

Selene suddenly uncurled, wiping the tears away from her face.

On the other side from the Reavers, the small green ship that had been fixed to them like a limpet released itself. Andy Vaughn had no intention of sharing the fate of the people that had killed his entire crew. As he sat in the chair he had recently pulled the body of his pilot from, he cursed, wept, shook with fury and the deep loss of his beautiful, insane sister.

The Fenris took off across the Black, rabbiting away from The Monarch as fast as it could.

Selene began to laugh.

There was one thing that Andy Vaughn had forgotten.

Reavers prefer to chase their prey.

Chuy waited for the harsh clash of metal on metal. Almost under his breath he began to recite, "The Lord is my shepard, I shall not want..."

He remembered the last time he'd seen reavers, and his face twitched where the scars of its teeth showed evidence how close a thing that had been.

"He maketh me to lie down in green pastures..." His voice grew steadier, his heart taking courage from the old verses, "He leadeth me beside the still waters."

It should have hit by now, he thought, and then the ship rocked as the Fenris jetisoned.

A smile touched his crooked lips; not a pleasant smile. "He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake."

Chuy gently laid down his sleeping burden to creep to a porthole in the cargo bay door. The ship still turned, a little planet without an orbit, only now and again revealing events outside.

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death," he turned smiling to his friends strewn about in the hold, "I will fear no evil:" His volume increased and he shouted, "for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff--they comfort me!" He threw a fist in the air, then laughed.

The screaming stopped. Ameri shuddered violently, her lips clamped together and her eyes nearly bugging out of her face. Then she wilted minutely, the silence reigned a little longer, and then became soft weeping. "They're going to die," she whispered. "Eaten, flailed, .... horrible things."

Solomon was still on the bridge. He watched the display closely as their previous attackers fled.

At that moment he realized that if it had not been for the debris field and for the pirates surely the Monarch would be still flying, they might have flown right in front of the reavers. It might be them about to be eaten alive and not Andy and his crew.

"Myster'us ways." he whispered to himself.

Once the shadow of the Reaver ship hit, Lu switched off the screen she had left on, holding in a breath. The shadow crept past them and after the other ship. Letting out the held in breath as the ship chased after the other, she looked at Sol.

"To close...far to gorram close." She got on the comm. "They're gone, chaisin' after the other ship now. I'm gonna keep an eye on them but boot up what we are gonna need to get us somewhere for repairs."

She started to flip some switches and then leaned back in her seat. "We're still gonna need them shuttles to get us anywhere. Thrusters can only take us so far, and we ain't got all of em'."

It was like a nightmare, a very loud nightmare you couldn't wake up from Chris thought to himself through the screaming of Ameri. Then it stopped, and he felt her shudder. Were they gone?

"They're going to die," she whispered. "Eaten, flailed, .... horrible things."

He let out a sigh, "They kept us alive though it seems. Come on, let's get you up off the floor so you can start helpin' our hurt, right?"

Hearing Lucille's voice over the comm made him let out another sigh of reliefe as he went to help the young doctor up. It was gonna take quite a while to get this ship moving again, and it was gonna take all of them to do it.

The Monarch spun for a while longer, as long steel cables were attached to each side of her and then to the shuttles. An odd assortment of hardware had been found and utilized to make the rig safe. Gaksets (steel core wrapped in a flexible sleeve) choked around the loading rings welded into the body of the ship, had been attached to long thick twisted steel cables with huge heavy shackles. In turn those cables were fixed to the sides of the shuttles in a similar fashion.

Lu and Sol were assigned the task of flying the shuttles. Lu went to the side that had the more damaged pivotal engine. She immediately put a touch of pull on the ship so that the spin halted.

By the time the shuttles had begun to tow The Monarch, Ameri had prepped Kynthia for surgery. Although her shoulder made it a bit of a hard task, and there were more than a few moments where she held her arm and tried to stop shaking. Each time, Maverick stepped in and soothed until she was able to continue. The rest of the time, he paced or stood arms crossed and a fixed, drawn look upon his face. Only the clenched fists betrayed the tension he was feeling.

Chuy sat with the rest in the lounge area. Waiting until Ameri finally declared that although it wasn’t as good a job as she wanted to do, Kynthia would live. She did not wake through the whole thing.

Selene perched by the windows of the bridge. She stared out into the slowly passing stars.

Proud Monarch no longer danced through the Black. As the field of stars shone around the limping ship, the shuttles guiding her as tugboats aid giant sea faring ships through boatyards.

Throughout the ship, although grateful for being alive, the crew and passengers wondered what was coming at them next.
