Ma'riel had to think for a second at Thomas' question before
she answered. "Precaution mostly. Was there anything you
wanted to see or help with? As we are entering into enemy
territory we use the yellow alert to keep us on our toes.
Most of our duties fall to making sure our shields are
aligned, that the warp core is functional, and that the
toilets are not leaking."

Thomas smiled and laughed, he always laughed at jokes. It
wasn't that he didn't take life seriously, just that he
liked to smile. "Actualy I am a new engineer, I just came
aboard today I think," it was so hard to tell time in space.
"My name is Alexander Thomas I am pleased to meet you
Ma'riel."

To say that the situation was very sickening would have been an understatement. Apparently, that Romulan Ale didn't agree with Jake, and now they were all paying the price. Despite how her head was throbbing, at least she had the sensibility to have dropped to the floor of the shuttle and turned her face out of the way so the blue gunk didn't land directly on her face.

If that had happened, especially with the smell, there was no doubt that she would have vomited what little had been in her stomach. As it was, she was fighting hard not to throw up just because of the horrible odor.

The Betazoid Captain slowly sat up, although she felt like she had just been dragged through the muck in Jake's stomach and thrown up with it. It was everywhere - on her clothes, in her hair, throughout the shuttle. This was a mess that even the cleaning crew on board the Zealous would have difficulties dealing with.

Azanialix looked at her former Chief Medical Officer, who had been responsible for their current predicament, and then sighed. "Jake, the next time something doesn't agree with your body, do you think we might be able to get a bit more warning? I'd hate to see this happen on the Zealous and have the entire crew tied up in decontamination during an urgent mission."

Taryn handed her one of the towels she had replicated. "Thank you," Zania said, starting to run the towel through her dark hair which was now filled with blue goo. "I'm sorry that you had to come on board the shuttle under these circumstances. Still, perhaps we can take this time so we can all get to know you, and for you to learn more about us."

The towel was becoming damp, and Captain Ja'arda hadn't even gotten to cleaning up the mess on her clothes. Cautiously, she managed to stand up and made her way over to the replicator. "I think we're going to need more towels."

Pressing a button on the panel, she announced, "Computer, replicate ten large towels."

Turning back to Taryn, Zania wondered, "Were you assigned to a ship previously, or have you recently graduated from the Academy?"

Despite the fact that the computer was doing the navigating, Murdock continued to sit at the front of the shuttle where the controls were located. The Captain, Jake, and the counselor were getting to know the new Zealous crew member who had beamed onto the shuttle, so there really wasn't anything for him to do at the moment, much less anyone to talk to.

Honestly, he wasn't sure if he wanted to talk to Lorena. The Captain had, in her drunken state, revealed why he had been down in the dumps, yet Lorena had chosen not to talk to him about it. How could she have missed all of the classic signs, which any shrink would have recognized?

He shook his head, trying to put it out of his mind at the moment. If Lorena didn't want to talk to him again, that was her choice.

As he returned his concentration on the shuttle controls, he felt something hit him . . . on the back of the head, his neck, and the top of his brown, leather jacket. It felt kind of heavy, but wet, which was very unusual considering where they were at.

The smell was the worst part. It reminded him of the foul stench that was ever present in the DOOM club, where most of the officers hung out in Da Nang. They ususally ended up drinking too much and then puking their brains out.

Ensign Rider walked up and handed him a towel, to which he nodded and told her, "Thanks." He stood, taking off his jacket and his cap, and began to wipe the gunk off. It was a light blue, but had the texture of snot.

As he did so, he looked around the shuttle and saw that the whole place was covered with the gunk. At least he had been sitting in the chair, as that caught the brunt of it.

The Captain didn't look like she threw up, and she certainly wouldn't have created that much of a mess. That left only one person who could have been responsible . . . Jake Sjet.

Looking at him, Murdock asked, "Jake, the next time you're gonna sneeze or spew chunks like that, you think you could cover your mouth or give us some more warning?" He focused on cleaning his clothing and muttered, "I sure hope this stuff comes off easy. I'd hate for my jacket to be ruined. It's like my good luck charm."

The ship that they were heading towards seemed pretty lightly powered, possibly a scout ship of some type. This operation should be simple enough but he would of course leave that for the mission commander to decide.

"You getting his?" he asked Spade "What do you think?"

The ship they were heading toward didn't 'look' very threatening, but Melissa could sense something. Was it anxiety? Eagarness? Her experience with the Tarmon Ay had been brief enough that, she was trying hard to determine which, but she had no true frame of reference. The Chief counselor looked at the small group opening her eyes.

"I sense a feeling of anticipation. I don't know if they are picking up on us or if they're intent on something else. I advise extra and extreme caution."

OOC-The First part of this post is frm the perspective of Valron, he's feeling a wee bit guilty if you couldn't guess. And Part Duex? That would be Blue Butt himself.

IC-

Hello?
Is…
Is anyone there?

Guess not, then again I’ve guessed a lot of things in life…in love, I my work…in my faith and in my beliefs…
And in those I trusted most, I pledged my soul to them…I pledged my body to the furnace of destiny and…

Was burned for my insolence. What right, what choice, as I given in meddling in the affairs of the gods. Of Sajuuk the Great Maker, who’s hand shapes and clears the path? Was it his will that I am now…what?

A ghost, a figment derived from the stuff of madness? Possibly, I can’t feel anything really, a dull memory of texture, of air….I feel it through the host now…second hand emotions and feelings, dulled through filters of the mind.

The nanites saved me…but doomed me to the hellish existence without substance. But I am alone in a single thought, that in the end…I deserved it. I made it all happen…what would have happened if I had not done two things?

The first, was to find that ‘Ship’. The First ones ship, the Khar-Toba…the ‘Great City’ in my home tongue…it was…it defied words. To stand near it, was, like standing next to some colossal beached whale or other sea going leviathan. Its skin had been picked at for years…no, millennia by sand and wind reducing it to those parts buried in the sand and the metallic braces that made up its space frame.

I always wondered how a vessel of such size could ever have gotten out of a planets gravity well. That thought was answered on the second day we were there…the day we discovered the reactor plating, the ruptured shielding matrix…I…we…the team used ropes and anti grav units to lower a few of us inside…it was so…large…that's the only way I could feel to describe it. Inside it was featureless, a black husk. Even with scanning equipment we had we couldn’t guess at its size. But we knew it as still active.

No.
Wait that’s not what I want to say…

It was…alive, somehow the construct of metal braces and strange technology of ancient design was…a living thinking…animal. Not to the extent of intelligent conversation but…you could feel it almost watching you, judging you worthy of its attention…

Of its praise.
And ultimately…
Its retribution.

I was taught a word once, ‘world’. To me it was the sphere of the galaxy, or the continually expanding nexus of the universe around us. The word meant to me ‘connection’ and ‘life’. But the more I think about it, the more I realise…that the world doesn’t exist for me…how can it exist with out her?

Her…she…we were…
Friends.

I’ve forgotten how long its been since we last saw ach other…and each day I feel it as we grow apart, be it mentally or in distance…that door will never open for me again, no…never…

But she is always young to me…A fertile plain of ancient beauty…and I will grow order, grey and aged like parchment alone with my sins…

Oh Thalia…don’t forget me…
She was always the second thing in my life…my responsibility and then…Thalia…
Xi…and then Thalia…
Honour…and…love?

Was it love we shared, if only for that singular moment or…I doubt it, she had taken one look in my eyes all that time past and seen….something dark…shifting below their jewel like surfaces until…

They reached out and took her, her scream it…echoes…in mind you see I…can’t hear it now, its lost to me…I needed that singular thought in my mind if only to remain grounded to the fact I am responsible…not the government….me….me me me me me…

You can call me greedy if you like…I wouldn’t mind…
Just…don’t call me innocent.
My name is Valron Halek…
The Butcher of Iconia.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jake’s eyes rolled about for a moment as he took stock of the now redecorated shuttle. It was blue, he liked blue it was a neutral colour, unlike Mars. Born from the fires of Dante’s inferno and the hellish visions of some Roman persist who declared it the god of War.
He was right.
Mars was the mother of all star ships in the federation, and Earth was its father. For since the dawn of time Earth had beaten Mars into submission, raped her of her riches and used her to propagate its fleets…churning out cookie cutter copies of ships and station parts.
She was a planet racked in pain.
That's when he felt a tingle on his abdomen.
Glancing down quickly he could see the sparkling energy that cover his skin, and the rough thread bare hole that was now covering most of his chest revealing the skin beneath.
He glanced at Zania, her vision distracted but he could see the holes that made her civilian clothes on one arm appear as Swiss cheese.
“Er…Zania…you shirt had holes in it before I vomited…right?” glancing at the others he could see their uniforms and clothes were beginning to show small holes here and there. No skin was pierces so obviously he nanites in the vomit were sated with merely converted the clothes they rested onto the component parts they needed to make moe of their kin.
Funnily enough the cow hide jacket Murdock wore was unaffected.
Great, he though as he saw his toes poke out of the tip of his shoes as the material that made them was dissolved slowly, I have vegetarian nanites.
TAG-All, enjoy the sub plot twist ha….hahaha….BUWHAHAHAHA!
To say that Captain Ja'arda was puzzled by Jake's question was an understatement. He was asking if her clothing had holes in it before he threw up? What, by the Four Dieties, was going on to prompt him to ask that question? Had he done something to her clothing, which was having a delayed reaction?
Looking down at her clothing, Jake seemed to be right. There were holes in the garments which had not been there before. Unless clothes were designed that way, as part of the sytle, Azanialix wasn't the type to wear clothes that was filled with holes.
To make matters worse, the holes were slowly growing larger. Probably within a matter of a few short hours, the clothes would have been eaten away. Taryn, Jake, and Lorena also seemed to be getting holes within their clothing as well, so the Betazoid wasn't the only one.
What could have caused this? Was there something acidic in Jake's vomit? If that was the case, why wasn't it trying to eat through the materials on board the ship, including the hull? Or could it have been something else, even a micro organism that may have managed to slip through the decontamination process and was brought on board the shuttle from Mars?
Now wasn't the time to speculate. Although Betazoids weren't shy about their physical form, the others on the shuttle may not be so open when it comes to being among their fellow crew members sans clothes.
"Commander Murdock, what is our present speed?" Zania wondered.
She watched as he took a look at the console and responded, "Warp 1, Captain."
"Increase velocity to maximum the Warp available for this shuttle. We need to get back to the Zealous quickly in order to avoid a potentially embarassing situation," she noted.
As she waited for Taryn's answer to her previous question, her assignment before the Zealous, Azanialix could feel something empathically. It was kind of hard to pinpoint the emotion at first, but as she continued to open up her senses to it, it became stronger.
It was sadness, and it seemed to be coming from Jake Sjet. Oddly enough, Jake himself wasn't displaying any outward signs of sorrow. Could the feeling come from one of the egos present within his mind?
The only one that Zania could think of which would feel such emotions would be Valron. He carried such a heavy burden upon his shoulders and, despite the offer of help, did not seem to want to share that with others. He, at times, seemed so alone in the galaxy with no one else like himself - at least none that had been located since the Iconians had used the gateway to escape their homeworld.
She wanted to talk to Valron and find out what was going on, but Taryn had never been present before when another ego within Jake's mind came forward, dominating Jake's physical form. Perhaps, when they were back on the Zealous, she could speak with Valron privately.
For now, at least, they had other concerns to focus on.
Luke was trying to cope with the fact that if Melissa got into trouble, there was very little he could do about it...
Mean while, on a noise like no other came over the speakers.
And tune, and then a man saying:
"We got it together didn't we
We've definitely got our thing together, don't we baby?
Isn't that nice?
I mean really when you really sit and think about it
isn't it really really nice?
I can easily feel myself sliping in more and more ways
in a simple world of my own
Nobody but you ... and me
We got it together babe"
“What is that?” Alex called out over the racket.
“Barry White sir!” the com ensign shouted “We’re transmitting it on all frequencies!”
“Shut it off!” someone called out, and was answered with a bleep as the mute function kicked in like a soccer referee.
“Thank god…” Alex said slowly.
“Er…sir, we’re still transmitting. Com units stuck in a cycling diagnostic.” The communications ensign looked up “We’re screaming out exactly where we are!”
Though the song was nice, Luke was far from enjoying it. The Ensign was right..
Three Tarmon Ay vessels dropped out of warp just within scanning range...
'Sir, three Tarmon Ay ships have dropped out of warp and are closing in on our posistion fast!"
Thomas had been watching Ma'riel work in Engineering for a
while when something in the corner of his eye caught his
atention. That cat like person from the sickbay was working
at a console. He was about to turn back to the inards of
energy routing systems when something clicked, the cat
wasn't wearing an engineering uniform.
As he stood up and turned around Ma'riel noticed and
followed his eyes to the out of place ensign. "What's she
doing here" said Ma'riel. When they had reached the cat
Ma'Riel said "Hey".
she turned around in fright, tail raised. Standing behind
her were
two people in Starfleet engineers uniforms, a man and woman
respectfully.
One of them was the same, or a clone of the man from
sickbay. The woman
was=85different, odd smelling like chemicals
and=85odd=85smelling=85things.
=93You the guy from sickbay right?=94 she said, dazzling
them with a view of her
impressive mouth full of sharp razor like canines.
Her tail fail, and hit a button.
Someone began to sing about his baby in a Smooth baratone
voice. Thomas looked up trying to find the source of the
voice, while the cats tail began to move with the rythm.
"What the..." said Ma'Riel.
Jarrold heard the call come in but he could hardly believe his ears. They had been ordered to return to the Zealous immediately. They were close to their goal but had been ordered to return. He had wondered how the Tarmon Ay were able to get close enough to the ship to attack them but that was a moot point right now. In a way he was glad that they had been called back. He didn't want something to go wrong. In his opinion the mission had been planned is haste and he was worried about Melissa being there. If things got hairy he didn't want her in a position where she could get hurt.
Looking down at his sensors he made a wide ban scan of the area and saw that the Zealous was indeed under attack. "Sir the Zealous is taking heavy fire. We need to get back asap." he said to Chi, who sat at the helm.
Spade recieved the message from the Zealous to return back to the ship. He was about to say something when Jarrold spoke up. Apparently he had heard the message too.
"Sir the Zealous is taking heavy fire. We need to get back asap." he said to Chi, who sat at the helm.
Jake suddenly became very nervous and afraid. Not just for the Zealous, but for themselves as well. In this little shuttle he didn't know what they could do if the Tarmon Aye attacked them. But he pushed any thoughts or worries to the back of his mind and sat with his fingers poised above the console, awaiting Chi's orders.
Ma'Riel took control once the music had started. The cat said "I didn't do it" and even he could see she was lying. Then Ma'Riel told him to mute the sound. He stepped around the guilty cat and began to look for the sound control, there and now his ears pounded in the somehow loud silence.
"I've got the music stopped, but the out communications have been....blocked
somehow," Ma'riel said in a confused tone.
Then the deck shook and Thomas's stomach tried its hand at a square knot. He knew that sound, they were being shot.
~ Engineering, get our communications back online. I want to be able to hail
the shuttle.~ Came Alex's voice from the bridge.
"Thomas I need your help getting that communication array back up. They've
blocked it from the bridge. Bypass the main board and route the
communications through the auxiliary panels."
He was getting nervous, fixing and rewiring he could handle but all these controls were not his style. But with a deep breath he got to work. He knew his duty, he may not be able to see the enemy trying to kill them. But his enemy was right in front of him, he had to fight the damage to the ship and keep it going longer than the other ship. His enemy was time.
"We have 10 seconds!" Ma'riel screamed as klaxons began to scream their warning. While his hand worked the back of his mind figured out that they were going to use the Multi-Vector Assault mode. He smiled through his concentration, he had joined this ship just to see this happen. Then smiled wider when he finally got past the main board. "There," he yelled as anouther blast shook the ship.
The lights faded and red ones replaced them. He was looking over Ma'Riels shoulder when a piece of wall litterally exploded near him. "the power coupling overloaded," said Ma'Riel without looking. "See what you can do with it."
Thomas grabed a solder tool and some wire from a kit on the wall and got to work. After a while of splicing and rerouting wires he had the power to the aft phaser banks back up. To get the last wire he had to almost crawl into the wall and his arms were buried in wires up to his shoulders. It didn't look pretty but it was done a lot faster than pretty. Besides his enemy wasn't ugly it was time.
Joy returned to her station and began working on a way to maintain communication with the shuttle through the planets interference.
Then suddenly a loud burst of music came through the speakers. Joy was certain it was not something she had done. The noise was silenced but then there were more pressing problems.
The Tarmon Ay had located them and were on their way.
Joy continued to work on establishing communication with the shuttle but communication from the bridge was being blocked somehow possibly by the approaching Tarmon Ay.
Joy half listened to the exchange of communication between Alex and the Tarmon Ay and wondered if they were going to get out of this.
The ship began to take fire and Alex ordered the ship to multi vector assault mode. Joy had not experienced this first hand yet and would have prefered it under better circumstances.
A call came from engineering that communications were back online.
"Zealous to the Seine. You are to return to the Zealous immediately.
That is an order. We are under attack. Use evasive manouvres, and try
to keep out the way, until you are safely docked."
Joy kept an eye on the shuttle as it made a quick approach to the Zealous. The last thing they would need would be to run into that storm on the way back.
Joy quickly scanned the planet arround the shuttle's location. There was a break in the storm activity they could get through near their location.
"Robinson to shuttle Seine I am sending you a quick safe route through the storms there is a break in the bad activity near your location"
Her message was acknowledged and Joy watched as the shuttle made it's way to the Zealous. As it approached the upper atmosphere it took a stray shot from one of the Tarmon Ay ships. It's shields were holding though as it approached the Zealous.
The shots shook the shuttle making Melissa grip her chair! So much for covort op's, it appeared they had been compromised. It had been a nice try however. She could tell from her mental scans of the Tarmon Ay that were not pleased but probably wouldn't tangle with the Zealous. Perhaps another day.
The shuttle moved more quickly away with back-up from the Zealous and soon the shuttle came in for a soft landing. She looked at everyone.
"I don't think they will follow. I don't sense any emotions that would indicate it."
Jake winced as the shuttle took a hit from a stray Tarmon Aye blast thinking that it was all over for them.
"Shields?"
He quickly looked at the console in front of him. "Holding!" he replied relieved.
Soon they saw the Zealous ahead of them. For one horrifying moment, Jake thought that it had been broken into pieces by the Tarmon Aye. But the three pieces were hardly damaged and he realized that the Zealous had gone into Multi-Vector Assault mode. Jake smiled, impressed and in awe by the sight.
Somehow Chi was able to pilot the shuttle up to the shuttle bay of one of the two aft sections even as it was engaged with the Tarmon Aye.
As soon as they landed inside, Jake got up and opened the door, stepping aside to let the others pass out first.
He then made his way to the Secondary Bridge in this part of the ship and relieved the officer sitting at Ops. He instantly took notice of how their shields were holding and how the other two parts of the Zealous were fairing in this battle. The Tarmon Aye didn't seem to be fazed by the fact that the ship they had attacked was now three ships. That, or they had gotten over it quickly.
"Activating Multi-Vector Assault Mode!". Luke shouted. He tapped in the special code, followed by the helm officer who put in the next series of codes.
A moment later one ship became three. One threat trippled. Changes of survival increased.
The MVAM may have been quite a remarkable and very enhansement in terms of technology and defensive and offensive tactics. It was one hell of a job to make it all work the way it supposed to. It wasn't long before Luke's fingers turned stiff from all the work, and tiny drops appeared on his forehead.
Odds may have turned to their favour. But it didn't change the fact that it was still three small ships against three large ones.
Luke had to keep an eye on all 6 of them. He had to make sure that the fragmented Zealous acted as one. Keep the Tarmon Ay from isolating one of the three sections. To see to it that the Tarmon Ay were given a good fight.
And then the shuttle emerged from the planets' atmosphere. The shuttle carrying Melissa. That made it 7 ships to see to.
Luke tried to create a safety perimeter around the shuttle, with all three sections of the Zealous circlling around it.
Sweat started running freely over his skin and some of it dripped on the console. The pressure Luke felt was immense.
And then the voice of Ti'ana came over the comn with the news that the shuttle had safely docked with her section.
Luke let out a grand sigh of relief. But he couldn't relax yet. There were still three Tarmon Ay ships to be dealt with. But now that the shuttle was safely aboard, there was no reason why they should remain in this region of space.
"Sir, with all do respect, there is nothing holding us here now. I suggest we retreat now."
Down in the Lounge, Quamada stared out the windows, into the vast
expanse of star-studded black. Not being part of the crew and having
all the technological difficulties and culture shock one might expect
for one from her background, sometimes the Lounge Manager felt one
step behind. But there was really nothing she could do, anyway. She
could be a friend to all, and do her best to make sure everyone could
relax in the Lounge, but that was all. In truth, that was all she was
ready for.
Vin'Ti was taking his break, and the Lounge was empty because of the
possibility of Tarmon Ay attack. So Quamada stood at the window,
seeing what she could see, with a large wolf on one side, and a large
cat sitting on her other side. The beams of light that were weapons
reflected in her sapphire blue eyes which watched, barely blinking.
She was tempted to use her psionics to see more, but held back.
"No!" her teacher shouted at her. "You cannot use your psionics like that, Kae!"
"How did you know?" Quamada asked, surprised. She was blindfolded with
a staff in her hand.
"You must never use your psionics unless by restraining, you would
endanger a life, understand? The mental energy required has effects
other than what you intend- you never know what might happen. How do
you know something that detects psionic energy isn't waiting for that
burst of power, to tell it where its prey can be found?" Earsa
elaborated.
Solemnly, Quamada nodded. "Come here," Earsa instructed his nine-year
old pupil. She followed him to an old birch tree, where a spider was
mending a hole in his web.
"Psionic energy is like breath. You're always breathing in and out,
but watch how little it disturbs the web, that constant rhythm of
breath. But when you utilize that energy, it is a direction of that
breath, like blowing on the web. Try it," Earsa told her.
The girl stepped up and blew gently on the web. The fragile strands
trembled, and the whole structure bounced around in the sudden wind
she had made. When she stopped, the whole structure subsided its
quivering except for the spider, who was frantically moving over the
web.
"The spider knows that that trembling was too big to have been a bug-
prey. But it may have disturbed something, may have broken a bit of
its home. See how it carefully goes over the entire web, making sure
how much it will need to mend?"
Quamada nodded. "Now do you understand that your psionic power must be
used with restraint?" Earsa inquired.
Again the girl nodded. "Just like Takiyah's, and just like Ra'ael's," she said.
The spider web. Quamada could almost feel glimpses of it sometimes. A
sense of bigger things, interconnected. Each action affecting another.
But she didn't understand it nearly all the time. Only sometimes could
she understand the consequences of an action, just like anyone else.
And so, Quamada stared out the window as the shuttle came in to dock,
watching with physical eyes just like anyone else.
"Hey.." Jake said, standing up to better acquaint himself with the situation at hand. Unfortunately the belt around his waste had become food for the nanites and thus the remains of his trousers fell to his feet.
His glow flared and hr dropped to reclaim what was left of his dignity. Noticing the look from Zania he sniggered.
"Your dreams lady.." he muttered and turned to Murdock as he held up what was rapidly becoming a pair of shorts.
"So...we there yet?"
After hearing Jake's question, Murdock studied the console in front of him. Thanks to the Captain's previous order, which he had complied with, the distance between the shuttle and the Zealous had decreased tremendously.
"Almost," the Texan responded. "Maybe another ten minutes, tops. The increase in warp's taken a toll on the engines and our power supplies. If it takes much more than 'bout 15 minutes to find the Zealous, we're all going to be drifting here together."
If it wasn't for the splitting headache from her hangover, Captain Ja'arda would be enjoying Jake's current situation. But she also had her own clothing worries to deal with. Whatever that blue gunk was, it had already eaten through most of her clothes.
She doubted that the others would want to see her without garments on, so she grabbed one of the clean replicated towels in order to cover up. That probably wouldn't last forever. Eventually, that blue gunk would eat through the towel as well, but hopefully not before they could return to the Zealous.
"What do you guys think..." Jake said slowly "If I were to jam my hand into one of the live power conduits?"
He looked around at some of the faces on the shuttle.
"I'm serious, think about it. From what I'm told something sucked up the power cores energy like a cola for five minutes, Now if that was me, which I'm not to sure I'd still have a lot of that energy in me right? Why not put it to use? Might give us a quick boost." he turned to Murdock "That is if you can slow us down?"
"You sure you ain't gonna blow us up by doing this? Jake, buddy, you can't control when you turn into that construct thingy. What makes you think you'd be able to do that?" the helm officer wondered. Maybe that power that Jake had sucked up was a one way street . . . he could absorb it, but it wouldn't work in reverse.
"Look we do it, we get back faster. We don't, we get back in a shuttle that's being eaten from the inside out by nanites. We land, they got on the Zealous...and this happens again. It'll be another half an hour until these critters finish off the clothes on our backs, and then they'll move onto the space frame of the shuttle…and then we'll all get to see a hull breech up close and personal."
Azanialix's attention was clearly grabbed when she heard Jake talking about the potential for a hull breech on the shuttle - not to mention nanites. "What you are proposing, Jake, how would that deal with these nanites, if they are nanites? Our priority should be containing or irradicating them now, before we get back to the Zealous, lest we endanger the lives of all of the crew."
"Well one way would be to fry the shuttle with gamma radiation, that would fry the little blighters...kill us all but the nanites would be toast." he sighed "That not being an option, I guess get back to the Zealous and find a way to counter the nanites...or I expend all my energy reserves, the nanites here the retreat order from within me and the rush back to me to stop me from popping up the daisies."
Zania thought for a moment, considering the options that Jake had presented. The first two were not an option considering the danger involved to others. But, the last one only involved a threat to Jake himself, provided that surge he projected didn't destroy the shuttle as Murdock feared what would happen.
"We can't wait," the Betazoid noted. "If you are absolutely certain that the nanites will return to you and prevent your death, go with the energy expenditure."
"Okay..." he looked about for a empty control panel, and finding one placed his palm onto it "I would suggest if anyone has objections about the cold they state so now because if my body senses it’s being deprived of energy it'll look to absorb the local radiation first...i.e. heat and my own glow. So....well...."
He felt small wires stretch out from his hand, wires so small they verged on the none existent. they sank towards the console and upon locking onto the surface proceeded to gnaw the glass cover
He felt at first sleepy. he suppressed a yawn as he numbly heard Murdock state they were accelerating. That was a good thing now, wasn't it? His strength began to flee and he was soon resting on the console with both hands. His glow faded rapidly afterwards, from a azure blue to a ghostly white, and then he seemed to turn grey.
His skin looked dry and brittle like glass, his breath came out in ragged gasps that crystallised into clouds of vapour before him as it became very, very cold.
A sickly red line began to spread from the small of his back, and with a slow deliberate dripping noise blood began to pool around his feet in a crimson lake.
"Hello.....is...anyone...." he gasped, his eyes rolling into his skull his hand releases the console and he fell backwards, slumping in a pool of his own blood. Slowly the blue gung, now more liquid and alive began to snake away from the members of the crew in the shuttle, like azure vipers returning t the nest.
But no matter how many returned, his skin remained a deathly grey mono tone. All except the view of a ship in three parts, a trinity of metal and spirit.
"Zeal...ous..." he was able to say through cracking lips "They......are...soo...beaut...beautiful..."
Jake had collapsed, just as he said that he would, but something he had also indicated might happen was actually taking place. The blue goo that had occupied the interior of the shuttle, after expelling it as vomit, was starting to return to his body. That was an encouraging sign, but the colour of Jake's skin, which had become almost a ghastly grey, was very troubling.
Making sure the towel wouldn't fall off, Captain Ja'arda rushed to Jake's side and cradled him. He had muttered something, almost incomprehensible, about something which was beautiful. "What's beautiful? Stay with me, Jake. I need you to stay awake," she urged.
Murdock wasn't sure exactly what Jake did, but they were now looking at the Zealous out of the front window on the shuttle. Jake didn't look so good and would probably need to get a check up from Alex in sickbay. Acting quickly, he opened up a communication channel and announced, "Zealous, please clear a shuttlebay for immediate landing, and have a medical team standing by. Don't ask what Jake Sjet did, but he's going to need to get checked over."
"My god...." he said, his eyes looking through the view screen towards the Zealous "Its full of stars....so full....."
His eyes rolled about for a moment and then locked onto Zania's.
"This....is....unsettling, I....can't feel....where am I going.....will I dream....please....answer...pleez..." a white, almost barnacle like scab was beginning to form on his cheek "I would like to....dream...."
TAG-Zealous crew, we're here!
The deck was beggining to shake with the consecutive hits by the Tarmon Ay ships. Thomas had already seen three engineers, limping or being carried, to an emergency medical station. He was stopped short by a short woman asking if he had a bipolar torch. She had blood running down the side of her head and her hair was a wet mess. When he didn't say anything she got a worried look on her face "you need to sit down your arms don't look to good."
He looked down his sleeves were ruined from small burns and tears and inbetween his skin didn't look any better. Most of it was superficial though so he said no in a firm voice and went back to work.
The place was turning into a mess but everyone seemed unfazed by the action around them, going about theirrepairs with a very professional air. He was used to seeing barely restrained chaos back home when fixing things but here everyone had a place and a job to do. These people weren't just trained how to work like this. it came from expirience, battlefield expirience. Maybe he had made a good choice coming here.
Luke was still waiting for a reply from Ducane, hoping the acting Captain would agree with him and order them to warp to safety.
Then his console bleeped, they were being hailed by the Captain Ja'aarda's shuttle. Were they out of their minds? They were in the middle of a dangerous battle in which the Zealous could be heavily damaged, if not destroyed. Surely they must've noticed they were in battle before they dropped out of warp?! This was no place for a small shuttlecraft.
"Zealous, please clear a shuttlebay for immediate landing, and have a medical team standing by. Don't ask what Jake Sjet did, but he's going to need to get checked over."
Luke let out a heavy frustrated sigh. 'Shuttle, Osswell here shuttlebay clear on mid-section'.
The midsection flew straight at the shuttle while the other two provided cover-fire, and a few moments later the shuttle was safely in the Mid-section's shuttlebay.
Luke turned towards Ducane, who still hadn't answered his question.
'Sir, I strongly recommend we leave now!'.
With the shuttle safely arrived in the mid section of the Zealous Joy turned her attention back to the Tarmon Ay ships.
Even with the Zealous in MVAM they were still taking damage and were not making much of an impact on the Tarmon Ay ships.
Then Joy had a thaught it was probably silly but as they were probably about to leave the area anyway what the harm.
"Robinson to Scott" Joy said.
"Scott here, what can I do for you" came the reply.
"Glad to see you made it back in one piece" Joy said and then continued "I was just wondering whether you thought you could use the crystal of image to create a little distraction for the Tarmon Ay ships"
"What had you in mind" Scott asked.
"Well" Joy said "Back home we always used to decorate the resteraunt at this time of year even though it was Klingon my parents could never resist putting up some lights and a few Santas and snowmen here and there. I was thinking a sleigh loaded with presents could be interesting and it might be a litle light relief to end the mission"
"I'll see what I can do" Scott replied.
Joy turned back to monitoring the Tarmon Ay ships one of them had suffered damage to one of their weapons arrays but the others had hardly taken any damage at all. Then the Captain's shuttle arrived and safely reached the mid section shuttlebay.
Luke turned towards Ducane, who still hadn't answered his question.
'Sir, I strongly recommend we leave now!'.
Joy looked towards the front of the bridge for a moment waiting for Alex's reply when there it was. Scott had done a brilliant job as across the sky pulled by 8 reindeer was a slegh piloted by a jolly looking father christmas loaded with presents. The fire from the Tarmon Ay ships stopped as they obviously were trying to decide on what sort of threat was posed by this new arrival. Joy knew the image would not fool them for long but could not help smiling.
He was flying…
Higher, and more majestic than any of the universe’s humble creatures he looked downwards…into the giant plant sized storm of Jupiter’s Red Spot. It was…larger than earth by a hundred times over, with lightening bolts kilometre’s long and tens of metres wide.
He felt no cold, no fear. He was the observer of this storm, not its master nor its victim. And yet, as his mind sank lower into the storm of boiling red gases the climate began to change. Pressures of this maelstrom affected him only as a light tingling breeze on his skin…
And his skin…was transparent, and…beautiful. He was no longer human in appearance, and doubted his physiology was similar to anything that the Federation knew of. Looking to his left he saw his arm, if that was what it had been. It now easily a hundred metres long, a thin membrane like wing that seemed to have made him into a glowing azure blue manta ray. He felt….everything…every thing…
Suddenly the gases of Jupiter’s rippling ‘sky’ parted and he entered a layer of gas that was the closest to ‘land’ that Jupiter’s gaseous atmosphere would ever know. A fine downy white show feel from the sky, comprised mainly of hydrocarbons and a scattering of more exotic chemicals.
And then, moving in-between these floating drifts of Jupiter’s ‘mountains’ are large gas bags. Clearly not some by product of the world of gas, they move with deliberate motion, with grace and in massive herds. The smallest of these grazing gas bags is larger than the Good year blimp, but their parents seem to stretch out towards the size of islands and states. And darting in amongst these god like sheep are aerial torpedoes, black, sleek and oily missiles.
These living jet propelled monsters dove and weaved through the grazing herbivores as they consumed the falling mix of petrochemicals. Occasionally a gang of these monsters would fall onto an ill or fledging ‘sheep’ tearing it to pieces in a frenzy of cutting teeth and shear velocity. But to say these gentle giants were defenceless was a violent understatement.
Larger gas bags tried to fend off the younger ones attackers, using arcs of electricity that bristled from its hide it struck one of the attackers, sending it spinning into the hellish depths of Jupiter’s crushing embrace. Meanwhile others whipped out mile long tendrils of teeth, like massive bladed chainsaws on tentacles.
But these creatures existed in a fragile eco system, captured in a rift where the pressures and temperatures were not flaring wildly into either extreme. Even Earths most feeble carnivore would make short work of one of Jupiter’s giant aerial missiles, as all life here seemed tp have the skin of a soap bubble.
And so, with a heavy heart Jake came to a single conclusion….No intelligence, no sentient life would ever arise from Jupiter’s marvellous eco system. None of the flocks displayed curiosity, their communications nothing more than cries for help or fear. And even their attackers, would one would have expected to have formed a higher set of intelligence for reasoning and planning had all of the IQ of a brainless killing machine like a shark.
Any intellect in Jupiter’s skies would be doomed to a stunted and trapped existence caught between heaven and hell.
Suddenly the world around him was gone, nothing but a blurred memory, a feeling of remorse and then…nothing, gone. He was then assaulted in a verbal and physical barrage of thoughts, feeling sand images. Scenes from his past, moments of time caught in a single tear drop of insanity or…pain.
Passion, his arm were wrapped around Ti’ana for a graceful moment,. He cared for nothing else as the two lovers coiled around each other in a dance that had been played out since the dawn of time immortal.
Depression, he was a lone. A cast of a organisation o rules and figure. Personal emotion and thought mattered not for the chain of command.
Hatred, he felt his hands wrap around a woman wind pipe. He then felt sickened if only for a moment, he found the act distasteful but felt compelled to do it as the woman coughed and spluttered. Her ‘face’ continued to morph, forming different shapes and forms. A betazoid he knew from the Academy, Zubb, Joy, Mel, Ti’ana and then….Zania.
Their was a snap, and Jake suddenly jolted forward, and looked at Zania. Her head was held at an angel that was anything but healthy. Her once lively gaze now clouded, and dulled as he could feel the ribbed vertebrate of her now broken neck.
And then, a flicker of remorse but that lasted only long enough for Jake to register what he had done. Then once again he was forced to forget.
Suddenly he was surrounded in white light, he was aware he was moving, spinning around but he didn’t feel the motions or the gee forces that he knew should have accompanied them.
A smile, a laugh, a tear a shout and a curse word flew from his mouth. Suddenly he was babbling at an extreme rate as his voice rose and lowered its self, grew deep and then flew into the high pitched and what he was sure to be the ultra sonic. Languages he was barely aware of flew out of his teeth next. Some of them were Earth based dialect but more and more turned out to be alien tongues. Klingon, Romulan, Vulcan, betazoid to name the ones he knew a spattering of as he zipped straight through them in a blaze of languages.
And then, contorting about like a marionette on a string held by some diabolical puppeteer he suffered a power and not wholly unpleasant feeling in his groin to such an extent he called out in shock.
And then he cried out as he span through so many degrees of empty space, every bone in his body ached and cried out. He was spinning faster and faster, he felt each bone begin to dislocate them selfs as the gees began to pull him apart like a chew toy held between the heads of the dog Cerberus.
The pain dissipated, the strange mix of pleasure and constant pain sub sided.
He awoke slowly, his eyes cracking open a little bit only to slam shut again when the harsh lights of the Zealous shuttle bay gabbed him.
Where was he, when was he?
“W…where…” he croaked in a tongue to dry to do anything “Am I…”
No one answered, and glancing down slowly at the rest of his body he was aware of his situation. His skin was still a deathly gray, yet it was still held onto the lines of electrical energy though now most of these ‘channels’ made his skin look like a ordnance survey of Europa with its vast system of cracked ice sheets.
“Shhh.” A woman’s voice cooed “Your safe…”
“I saw….” He began “I saw such….beautiful…so beautiful…I saw them…”
“Zania what’s he mumbling, hey Jake stick around you hear me!” the voice was familiar…Texan, southern…to many voices….
“I saw them…the Daughters of Sol…They were…so….” His words began to fold into one another and soon his delirious ramblings were lost, and their meaning dropped as his mind was slowly torn to pieces by nanological terrors and then pieces back together to allow the full integration of Taneth’s ‘upgrade’ and the other abilities that were yet to flagged by the miracle machines of Hellish impurity.
“Zania!” he said, a hand reaching up as skin cracked and broke free as though his very body was losing its fight with god and was even as he gripped Zania’s shirt by its collar falling apart in a ash like powder.
Taking no note of the state of his crumbling digits Jake held onto her as best he could with a vice like grip.
“They cannot find them…they are not our responsibility…they…deserve our…absence...and…” his eyes opened wide for a moment “Stars…so many…stars…”
TAG-Zania. Murdock, Lorena (Cough post soon please) and Taryn (Did Jake grab onto you by mistake?)
OOC-Hey, at least he didn’t resort to ‘My god, its full of stars.”
The Zealous was taking heavy damage. All three parts of it. The Bridge Jake was in was a mess and so were some of the crew. Luckily Jake had managed to keep from getting hurt.
"Ma'am they're coming around again!" he said.
"Evasive maneuv-" a huge boom resounded very close to them and Ti,ana went flying into the forward console, wacking her head and shoulder on the edge of it.
She stood. "Report!"
"Damage reports coming in, no casualties....are you ok?" he asked worried.
"Fine. Damage control teams to the heaviest damage first, have them
prioritize."
"Weapons and shields are down."
"Definitly fix those first."
"Open a channel to the Zealous."
"Channel open"
"Alex, we're getting our asses handed to us over here, whatever you're
going to do..." she said.
"Standby." his voice came over the comm.
And thats when Jake saw it.
"What the hell?"
"What is it Spade!" Ti,ana demanded.
"Its..." Jake didn't know what to say. He double checked his sensors.
"Its Santa Clause?"
When the shuttle dropped out of warp, Murdock had to do a double-take. The Zealous was split into three sections, and they were right in the middle of a fight with several ships . . . Tarmon Ay ships.
"Oh boy. Hang on to something back there. We might be in for a bit of a bumpy ride," he advised the others. Lorena and Taryn could easily grab a seat or something to hang on to, but the Captain was on the floor holding Jake. One hard turn and they'd both slide into a wall or one of the benches.
Luke Osswell's voice could be heard over the communications channel, informing them to proceed to the mid section of the ship. The shuttlebay there was clear. No sooner had Luke said that, the section of the Zealous began to close the distance.
He barely managed to avoid a couple of phaser blasts from the Tarmon Ay ship, but they eventually managed to safely land. He didn't even bother to power down the shuttle before lowering the ramp at the rear of the craft and peering out to see if there were any medical staff out there as he had asked for.
Surprisingly, the entire shuttlebay was empty. What in the heck was goin' on?
He returned his attention to Jake, who looked to be just as bad if not worse than ever. When Jake grabbed the Captain, something very shocking happened. Jake's very extremities began to crumble away. Transporting him to sickbay obviously wouldn't work.
Tapping his combadge, he announced, "Medical emergency in the shuttlebay."
