Woo Hoo another fan. I think the Dresden books just get better and better. I am so envious of anyone who is just discovering them and still has loads to read.

While I wait the the next one I have started Jim's fantasy series, the Codex of Alera. I do not normally read true fantasy but these books are superb. They would also make a marvellous sim.

I am definitely up for a Dresden game.

I would play a member of the White Court or a Warden if it happened. :)

I change my mind almost every time I think about it LOL. Possibly an apprentice Wizard, or Red Court, or maybe the winter Knight. So many possibilities.

It could be fun to play a bad guy for a change. Not that Quin is particularly good but he is on the side of law and order, for now anyway.

This has been a very popular poll. Glad to see everyone taking an interest.

What interested the most was seeing that coming in third was an "epic" three votes for Post-Voyager sims. It's interesting because I would venture to say that most, if not all, of the SLA's Star Trek sims are post Voyager.

I can say for certain that The Lionheart and Potemkin take place in 2383 and 2384, respectively. (That's about 7 years after the end of Voyager!) Into the Darkening Tide is set in the early 2400s.

Just wanted to point that out.

For a successful sim in the Dresden universe you probably need a group that would be working together (or just interacting with each other regularly), otherwise you'd just be a group of fanfic writers writing stories in the same universe.

I'd recommend a group in the White Council or one of the vampire courts as a basis (although having individuals not associated with that group would still work).

About Trek, the Ark Royal and the Pegasus are also taking place in 2383. We have offerings in all three simming formats for the Post-Voyager/Nemesis Trek universe.

Perhaps a group of wardens would work. There is a war on in the Dresden verse and something could be done round that.

Wardens are a pretty select group, no?

Who's in for a Dresden sim? Josh, Quin, SDJ, me, anyone else?

They are but because in canon their numbers have been decimated they are accepting Wizards who would not normally have made the grade.

So sorry about the spoiler. (tapes mouth shut with duct tape).

You must read faster LOL.

I think I have now read as far as I can until Small Favor comes out in paperback. I am not sure if the next Alera book is out yet in the UK.

Hurray loads of interest in a Dresden Files game. I could only pbem or on a board. Being in the UK it is difficult to get on line when other people are.

I would happily help to set up/moderate a game.

Has anyone considered Dahak series from David Weber as well? All three books can be found online for free at http://baencd.thefifthimperium.com/09-A ... llCostsCD/

They're over on the right hand side. On the left is the entire Honor Harrington series I suggested earlier on (page 2).

Superheroes and Fantasy

Postby The Awakened » Fri Aug 15, 2008 4:08 pm

Hey, just pointing out that I AM running an Xmen genre sim that's been going for 5 years and we're going great.

And we don't have issues with SHS.

But the real secret is that we're not *about* superheroes. Its not about the spandex and the superheroing- not exactly.

The journey for the character starts immediately with the writer creating the person who will eventually have powers.

1) They write their character's day-to-day life, setting up their pattern of personality, their friends and coworkers, their family and relationships. It helps us get a good grasp of the character and weeds out people who just want to write spandexers that are just life support for their cool powers.

2) Once the writer has gotten to a certain point, not pre-determined, where the character speaks to me with what powers would be interesting, I contact them to reveal tidbits and deal with their awakening. Awakening is the process where their nice normal world get turned upside down by the advent of powers in a pretty hostile world. Since we're pretty real-life based, the reactions of the public are pretty realistic.

3) Eventually the character gets the "hard-sell" about life as a metahuman in an intolerant world. That doesn't mean it will always be intolerant, nor does it mean that characters don't have choices. we have writers with characters that don't want to be there, don't want to train and are making themselves miserable with it. We also have characters that always wanted to be a superhero but them they got it and it wasn't quite as cool as they thought it would be. As a matter of fact, all their friends left them, their family freaked and they have to hang out with weirdos now. Yeah, superpowers, wheee.

4) And then there's mechanics. all characters get a bio, using the old Marvel superheroes RPG tables so that everybody has an idea how strong they are, how they measure up against each other and the world around them. This also helps avoid SHS so when I have to go reign someone in (which happens rarely), I can point to the consistency of the numbers and there it is.

5) Progression. Largely progression was based on participation and quality, based on my own perceptions of it and whether or not I felt a character was being developed enough by their writer. Our main rules is "It doesn't happen if it's not written". So, it encourages writers that want to progress and develop to do the writing to make it happen.

Now, I actually have a process of awards in place, monthly and quarterly. each post gets the character points, awards give them points, exceptional work gives them points. Points = progression. If a writer wants the character to learn Hacking, then they have to go to classes, write the classes and training and as they do, they get the points to buy the skill. Really good writers or really good posts or just a lot of decent posts will get you there faster.

On Fantasy

I've run a Faerun Forgotten Realms DD3.5-based sim for a little while that was basically diceless roleplaying. Characters got a certain number of discretionary points they could use to add to tests and fights in their writing, usable each "day" of sim time, that allowed them to basically bring their values up to match or better than those of tasks or situations. It was largely an honor system that I sort of checked to keep people in line but I wasn't a stickler. It took a little work to hammer out the details of the diceless gaming/sim writing balance but once in place, it took little maintenance. Most fights and party-actions were JP's or someone would write me an adjudication question in PM or email and I could say, "yes, that's within your abilities" or "that's probably an extended effort" or something else.

JP's started out with initiatives, a description of the situation with ranges and distances and bearings and off we went. Die 6 did 3 points of damage to leverage against armor, hit points, etc. Likewise, hit die were 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 points per level plus Con damage. It was all diceless and it worked and it really wasn't hard to do.

Re: Where would you like to see the SLA Expand?

Postby The Awakened » Fri May 28, 2010 7:02 pm

Well, since I watch this topic and sort of keep up except when I'm overwhelmed elsewhere, I wish SLA went for more freeform sims.

I mean superhero sims and science fiction and fantasy and stuff are great but they still box writers in in such a way that they can't really sink their teeth into their creativity. I mean that referencing Dresden, Trek, Star Wars, etc. Most of them still have one or two people in the driver's seat and every body else still posting to follow.

Some writers like or even prefer that- it keeps the expectations down on them. But then you consider posting minimums, heightened expectations for the HoD positions, etc the "expectations" are still there, just artfully clothed.

Most of you know I've got my own sims and they've been running since a couple years before Seth passed. They're almost more than I can keep up with simply due to the lack of previously crafted IP we have to limit us and only use the small framework of consistency I use to keep things from going haywire.

It IS possible to write superheroes with planet-cracking abilities, in their own genre with original IP, without actually cracking the planet or looping it into left field. It IS possible to write high-fantasy and REALLY out there sci-fi without completely losing the fun factor of it- you have to broaden your horizons, expand your perspective and be willing to push yourself into completely new territory, new roles and new perspectives as writers.

It's a hell of a good ride.

So that's what I'd love to see SLA do, broaden its horizons and deepen its perspective and tread into completely new territory. And if anybody wants me to explain how I manage it without going apesmack, I'm at your service.

I've had thoughts along similar lines, can't say I've first thought of super heroes and what not, but the mind can come up with a number of interesting possibilities. Whats that old chest nut about their being more monsters in heaven and earth than are thought of in our philosophy? Or something less chopped up?

I'd be game for such a venture if it struck a chord.

Re: Where would you like to see the SLA Expand?

On of the alternate storylines I have in my superheroes group "Awakenings" is a group of altered people. They were completely normal people or mutants or whatever and some otherwordly completely alien "force" swept away their mortality and turned them into supernatural horrors....

Or did it?

The Glooming, as they've started to call it, is a manifestation of a new force in the paradigm and the creatures these people became are what we interpret them to be- what our minds can handle and thus we see them at the level of perception we can survive. They ARE beyond mortality and pose not only an intense writing scenario because almost all, without fail, are grotesque in their True Forms. They also remove the components of Shelter, Food and Sex from the equation of writing.

"What's left?" you may find yourself asking and therein lies the challenge. Not everyone can do it, it doesn't appeal to everyone- some people like their character to be "pretty" and are so attached to that the automatically shy away from anything else. Some people write for the imagined sex, some people write out of boredom and they like not having to think very much and some people write because they get to express themselves in a way that satisfies them.

The Glooming is an example of my point. There is nearly no frame of reference save what you, the writer, create for the character, yourself and your readers. It creates a minimal framework in which consistency can be created and maintained but at the same time releases creativity in ways that can't be duplicated int he common genre of someone else's Intellectual Property.

Not to be a naysayer on the superheroes thing, but i have seen so very many done so very badly i wouldn't put money on another... As has been said you need a super tight control on the game or it just don't work...and super tight control doesn't work too well with free creativity.

We had a great fantasy game, freeform play, but that ran into a similar problem, that without a solid framework people were a little shy of putting their character to the edge, seeming too extreme, or even introducing new plot elements, and thus the persons moderating became gamesmasters through no choice of their own... and the freeform went to pot.

I personally like a darker edge than the fluffy federation normally offers, so the harrington stuff might be worth looking into? I would just be concerned that with so much written very different expectations might arise?

I would be interested in another firefly sim (even have a character kicking about someplace), but would seriously advise not crossing it over with trek or the like... again have seen the "independent trader in trek" thing tried and it went no place. (3 times started three times didn't even get the crew together before posting dribbled out)

With enough people shouting about Dresden files I might be tempted to look into that, but seriously doubt I have enough time to read the books and play it :P

One that has been chucked about but I have never seen done was a Sliders type thing, where all these 'verses are destinations... the players drop in for a mission, then hop on and maybe come back if they are lucky unlucky later... (ie the players really want to)

Brawl and I were talking about a Dresden Files SIM last year -- We had plenty of people said they'd do it... but it never really got off the ground.

Now, just so you know:
- I really enjoy the game world that Jim Butcher is creating
- I have read all the books, the latest is in the mail :)
- I have the RPG books -- I'm prepping a live table-top campaign, and
- If people were interested, I'd be willing to run it... wherever.

Just more food for thought.

Now... what other ideas can you all come up with there???
