Crazy out there idea...why not make something original? I'm not sayying the other ideas are without merit, their not and are all fabbie (if thats even a word). But as Ali pointed out, she's been on one, and they've all been done. Why not set up a game, with an idea thats not been a major set of book,s or a motion picture, or a beautifully crafted TV serise curely put down by an Ozzy drunkard in charge of one of the largest networks in the world?

By which I do not mean Firefly...at least not directly.

I rest my taped up brief case.

I'm all for an original sim but here's the biggest problem- no fanbase. From a recruiting standpoint, it's a nightmare. How do you get new folks in? It's going to 100% require word of mouth or someone coming across it and saying "hey, what's this Ruined Earth sim?" (anyone steals that title- I'll kill them- it's my novel). It's going to be very very very difficult to recruit new players.

Simply put- great idea, but it's going to be a very incestuous sim. Once the GM loses interest or has RL slap them upside the head, well, the sim's more than likely going to die. I wouldn't do it unless that was my only simming effort, period.

My hell- why have I forgotten to mention this one- Hellboy!! I'd join a BPRD sim in a heartbeat!

So my list is now (in order of preference)
Superhero sim (looks to be a mini sim in the works there)
Dresden Files
BPRD
Trek sim with a new frontier (like the USS Pegasus- check her out!)
Stargate Atlantis
Spy-fi

Anyone digging on putting together a mini sim for any of those?

And the Assassins School is coeducational..... with good lawyers

So like a twisted Harry Potter kind of thing, where exceptional young people are brought up in the four houses of the founders: Bloodknife, Deathpowder, Longshot and Noose?

I would definitely play in a Dresden Files sim, especially if it was canon characters.

Honourverse, as in David Weber's books? I've read a few of them, a little technobabble heavy but a good read.

This is true, especially of the later books when they get very...political. Ah, the perils of making it into the Admiralty and now having to watch your political back as well.

Best part is the books are online as well to read. The entire Honorverse, Dahak series, Empire of Man and Starfire as well.

I would write for Discworld in a heartbeat.

I like superheroes as well bt if your going to do it pick up a palladium superhero rpg book and roll for the characters powers as the lead writer then assign them or have them draw fro them. The way palladium describes the powers they are quite limited but fun.

Mutant animals (from an exposure to TMNY RPG by palladium)

Gamma World setting (far future, post-apocalypse, mutants, hi tech and low tech very fun)

AD2300 setting, very interesting - limited space travel - lots of action and an implacable alien enemy called the Kafer (cyberpunk in there as well as some allied aliens - mostly normal humans through and the way the countries are different on earth is fascinating)

Ringworld setting (known space setting) by larry niven (ive read his books forever and the setting is really fun)

ill write more if i can think of a few more worthy entries

I still think that other fantasy realms would be great for role-playing adventures (i.e., Narnia, any world based on Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman, the Bond films, Middle Earth, even D&D Worlds without all the stinkin' rules and dice :) )

Fantasy - mechanics of a fantasy sim?

Postby MattW » Sat Jul 12, 2008 12:12 pm

Hmmm... we have quite a few fantasy votes

How to define Fantasy? Well. other than "I know it when I see it"... the definitions of Fantasy and SF that I'm most comfortable with are "SF is stories about things which might not be impossible in the Universe, as we understand it. Fantasy is stories about things which are DEFINITELY impossible in our world, as we understand it." So Narnia is Fantasy and Star Trek is SF {if you exercise a little generosity of spirit}

Foxy points out that there are problems with people understanding Steampunk - but Steampunk's only a small step away from the 'real world'. It has physical laws which are (more or less) the same as ours; Fantasy involves a setting that probably doesn't share those constraints (Dragons, undead, chainmail bikinis etcetera). IMHO this makes it difficult to have a shared view of what is likely - or even possible.

It's all this 'likely', 'possible' and 'definitely impossible' that make me worried. How would you overcome the narrative problems of a multi-author fantasy story (aka a Fantasy sim)?

A Fantasy setting: Shakespeare's World

Postby MattW » Sat Jul 12, 2008 1:40 pm

Just to show that I don't totally object to Fantasy RPGs, here's a setting from two authors. Both are far more competent at Fantasy than I am: Poul Anderson and William Shakespeare

Consider - if you will - the following

1. There are several and various 'anachronisms' that appear in Shakespeare's historical plays (things like clocks in 'Julius Caesar' and cannons in 'Macbeth').

2. Many of Shakespeare's plays have supernatural elements and some are unapologetic, out-and-out Fantasies such as 'The Tempest or 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'

Now.. and follow carefully, please ....consider Poul Anderson's idea...

Imagine a world in which every single one of Shakespeare's plays was an accurate and precise historical record (the dialogue may have been tidied up for dramatic performance - but not much else). There WERE clocks in Roman times. There WERE cannons in 11th Century Scotland. Hamlet did see his father's ghost. Titania, the Queen of the Fairies was/is VERY REAL. This means that 'Shakespeare's World' has both more magic and more technology than our own...

Poul Anderson's "Midsummer Tempest' moved things forward to the generation after Shakespeare's death: the English Civil War of 1642 . In this war, the Cavaliers are the ultimate embodiment of High Chivalry; they are aristocratic, noble, heroic, glorious - and supported by the Fey. On the other side are the Roundheads, who are not without merit and not without their own dark poetry; they promise freedom, equality, order - and the fruits of the Industrial Revolution (which is coming about 150 years early).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Midsummer_Tempest

So, there's a possible Fantasy setting: Shakespeare. His writings are all online and include guidelines for the use of magic and non-human races

We could go multi-genre. If the Industrial revolution occurs in the 1640's, then espionage or 'dark future' settings could be earlier too.

I would jump at the chance to play The Morrow Project. I am certain I can find space for it in my Sim roster.

In fact.. I would offer my help to get it going MattW.

I am loving the ideas that are flowing here. I wish I had a brain at the moment to think of any myself.

There was some talk of the super hero genre...what about the Wild Cards setting? Certainly not your everyday superheroes or world for that matter.
