Mardi Gras

Postby llbirdnow1 » Fri Feb 20, 2004 8:30 am

Anybody doing anything for Mardi Gras?

They always have a parade at Soulard, but I've never been and probably won't go. I'm sure the parade will be on TV though. Might watch it.

Mardi Gras came to New Orleans through its French heritage in 1699. Early explorers celebrated this French Holiday on the banks of the Mississippi River. Throughout the years, Orleanians have added to the celebration by establishing krewes (organizations) which host parades and balls. Carnival quickly became an exciting holiday for both children and adults.

Mardi Gras means "Fat Tuesday" and of course is celebrated on that day of the week. The date can fall between February 3 and March 9 depending on the Lunar calendar, used by the Catholic Church to determine the date of Easter. Mardi Gras is always 47 days before Easter Sunday.

The official colors for Mardi Gras are purple, green, and gold. These colors where chosen in 1872 by the King of Carnival, Rex. He chose these colors to stand for the following:

Purple represents justice

green stands for faith

gold stands for power

I'm probably going to end up working, and I know I don't have the money to go to New Orleans for the festivities. I'll probably see it on the news, especially as we get closer to the 24th.

The info you posted is fascinating, especially what the colors represent! Thanks, Waverly!

You're not the only one with working weekends! I'm so used to working weekends that if I'm not working, I think that something's wrong! LOL!

Part of it comes from the Roman Catholic faith. Lent, which begins with Ash Wednesday, is a time of sacrifice and fasting. Catholics are asked not to eat meat on Fridays, and also to give up something during the 40 day period.

"Fat Tuesday," as it has come to be known, is the last day when Catholics can divulge in life's pleasures before having to make sacrifices.

Hope that helps!

Down South, Mardi Gras means gay and lesbian. I am not getting involved in that.

Working weekends

Postby Melissa Richards » Sat Feb 21, 2004 1:33 am

Being salary I tend to work weekends and weekdays. There are times I have to take my work home with me and my home computer is used for work as much as my work one is. So there isn't much distinction for me between a weekend and a weekday. Usually I take Sundays off and other days I sometimes take off. That's the nice thing. You can leave different hours :)
