The "face" of the Weekly has changed from an e-mail sent out to all ships to it's current state - a web version! The web version has both a high speed and 56k version.

You can view each Weekly posted since the relaunch here: http://weekly.slasims.com

SLA Reports - July 2, 2003
This Report covers 6/1/03 - 6/30/03

Quote:
" The SLA is the best thing I've experienced. I've looked into other sims, and there's nothing better than this."
- Clayton Arboro, SLA.

I. Introduction

The SLA Reports are a monthly description of the current status of the SLA group including recruiting, message board usage, web stats, fleet and personnel changes, website updates and more. These Reports are offered so that you, the Simmers and Hosts, can be kept up to date on the status of this Sim Group on the whole. The compilation of this data also helps the Council to realize what areas need focus and what areas we are succeeding in. Hosts are expected to forward these reports on to their crews. Please do so as this impacts their Simming.

II. Recruiting and Staffing

As we enter summer we expect recruiting to slow to a degree. Summer is the slow month for simming and this is the season where many games seem to struggle. Amazingly, even with the summer upon us and the server being down for almost a week (sporadically) June still saw high numbers for recruiting. Despite both of these major issues we saw a drop only by 15. The server being down alone should have dropped us by about 20 applicants alone. Factor in summer months and we should have seen a drop closer to 30.

I believe the main reason for the numbers not to have dropped as significantly as expected was the increase in advertising. When the server issue was resolved a couple of us began advertising heavily to make up for the lost ground. We had dropped from an average of 2.65 apps a day to about 2.0. During the last week of the month our focus on advertising brought up back up to about 2.23 apps a day, making up a great deal of ground for the short (30 day) month.

For the month of June 2003 -

Applicants - 67
Total Change from last month - (-15)

SLASims.com - 27
Total Change from last month - (-3)

Non SLASims.com - 40
Total Changes from last month - (-12)

Website Apps -

Academy - 2 (+1 from previous month)
Archangel – 1 (-1 from previous month)
Avenger - 2 (same as previous month)
Centauris - 2 (-1 from previous month)
FOR-1 - 2 (-4 from previous month)
Lexington - 5 (+1 from previous month)
Mercutio - 1 (+1 from previous month)
Potemkin - 3 (+3 from previous month)
Starbase 27 - 2 (-1 from previous month)
Stargate SG-4 - 15 (-1 from previous month – Wow!)
Stargate SG-6 - 1 (no stats from previous month)
Vigilant - 3 (no stats from previous month)

Shakaar Fleet - 1 (+1 from previous month)

Estimated Group Size - 365 members
Group size change - (+32)
Retention rate of applicants - (47.76%)

Growth was not too bad this month and retention is looking good.

Number of Active sims – 25 (of 27. IKS RanKuf still to launch and OPC still to re-launch)

Sim Applications - 7
Sim change - (+3)

SLA announced Ark Royal (Excelsior Class, MB sim), Stargate SG-6 (MB Sim) and the RanKuf (Klingon BOP, PBEM sim).

Average crew size – 14.4231
Average crew size change - (-.48997)
* affected by multiple new sim launches, thus lowering average crew size.

Average Live Action crew size - 14.1875
Crew size change - (+.4375)
Average PBEM crew size – 12.5
Crew size change - (-1.0286)
Average MB crew size – 13.3333
Crew size change - (-4.66667)

This month saw a significant drop in the PBEM crew size average due to the launch of a new PBEM game and a recent drop off on one sim. We also saw a drop in the MB average crew size with the launch of two new MB based games.

Largest crew size - 30
Smallest crew size – 8

Simmer Breakdown:

AOL/AIM – 56.27% (211 Simmers)
Change – (-1.73%)

PBEM – 29.33% (110 Simmers)
Change – (-2.67%)

IRC – 3.73% (14 Simmers)
Change – (-1.27%)

Message Boards – 10.67% (40 Simmers)
Change – (+5.67%)

At this point it would probably be prudent to concentrate on recruiting for the rest of the summer. Since the summer months are typically the slowest for sim groups, it would probably be wise to simply recruit and not launch more games until August.

Also, according to the numbers we should probably concentrate a bit more on advertising for the group as a whole and for the particular Fleets. In June we saw 27 apps through the SLA main site, bringing our 3 month average to 26.33. This is a drop from our previous months three month average of 29.66. As such this is a resource we should focus on a bit more.

Our Fleet websites recruiting has brought a three month average of about 2.333 applicants a month for the last four months. This means that we are seeing just under 1 recruit a month from each Fleet website. Perhaps if we began focusing more advertising on the Fleet websites we could increase this as well. This is a great marketing potential for our group as we can attract those looking for smaller groups by showcasing our separate Fleets.

Keep in mind, as we do focus more on the Fleets and the groups on the whole, we hope that the Hosts will be able to take a few minutes a week to hit the major recruiting areas, such as PBEM.com, for their respective sim websites. If this is done in addition to our refocus,

III. Board Usage

The message boards for the SLA are one of the most important tools for showcasing activity and drawing interest for the group, as well as the individual Sims. As such each sim should be trying to make use of their boards as much as possible. Activity in this area can only lead to more applicants for your sim and a larger crew for you to work with.

The boards have continued to grow and the numbers are simply going through the roof. We are looking ahead to crossing the 20,000 post mark in the very near future. This month we jumped by an incredible number of posts and it’s simply amazing. Great job one and all.

Posts for June 2003 - 4070 posts
Change - (+2376)

Number of Users: 388
Change - (+41)

We also broke our record for most users on the board at the same time once again. On June 5th the boards had 34 members on at the same time (8:21pm).

Highest General Posting:

1. SLA Lounge - 1080 posts (first last month) - Awesome!

2. Star Trek General – 435 posts (fifth last month) – Wow!

3. Voyager – 268 posts (second last month) – WTG LaFontaine!

4. Deep Space 9 – 248 posts (not ranked last month) – Moving up quick!

5. The Next Generation – 203 (not ranked last month) – Doing good!

Highest Sim Posting: (ranked by a total of all boards assigned to game)

1. USS Centauris – 145 (first last month) – Is the Centauris the new champ of the boards? Great job!

2. USS Lionheart – 125 posts (not ranked last month) – A live action game is taking back the boards!

3. Stargate SG4 – 56 posts (third last month) – Good job SG6

4. Lexington – 54 posts (second last month) – The champion of the boards takes a hit!

5. USS Lee – 51 posts (not ranked last month) – Big climb from last month! Great job!

We’re starting to see some competition here and it looks like live action games have finally gotten back on the boards! It’s looking like a competition between the Lionheart and the Centauris now for champ but can you really count the Lexington out?

Remember that one of the reasons people sign up for your game is because of the activity they see on the boards. If they don’t see activity they may not request your game or even visit your website.

USS Lee, a great job this month and it looks like you guys are really moving up there. You are the July Sim of the Month!

IV. Website Stats

The website stats are not available this month due to the server change. Sorry.

V. Fleet Updates

Changes keep on coming. Some changes this month!

The USS Vigilant launches with two new hosts taking over for the Wildcat. The XO has already created a great website for the game and it looks good!

SG-6 launched within the SLA, expanding our Stargate sim selection and offering a great deal of fun.

The Ark Royal launched, offering a Trek Message Board sim!

The IKS RanKuf is approved and in the process of launching. This will be our first Klingon sim and is a PBEM game set on a Klingon BOP during the TOS Movie Era.

The SLA launched the Stargate Command website at http://stargate.slasims.com. Look for more exciting things to happen in the Stargate area as we look to launch more games in this genre.

SLA Reports - August 3, 2003
This Report covers 7/1/03 - 7/31/03

Quote:
“Wait? The Admirals don't have attitudes? The hosts want to help simmers? The group is well run? The games are fun? What kind of Bizzaro-world did I fall into?”
- Ensign Logan, SLA.

July was an interesting month for recruiting. June had seen a drop to 67 apps for the group, this month we bounced back to our average of around 80 apps a month. Now, keep in mind that applicants do not directly translate into new simmers. There will always be fewer new simmers than applicants but we are taking steps to improve our retention rate (percentage of new simmers that remained after the normal drop off).

We also saw the launch of two new websites giving the group even more resources for recruiting. On top of this the Recruiting Chair, Commodore Pamela Greeley, has enacted a new recruiting goal: Every month Pam will be doing her best to see every sim (open to recruiting) receive at least one applicant from either the SLA or their own site. This should help make sure that our recruiting system stays fair and that everyone gains from this.

And now, onto the numbers!

For the month of July 2003 -

Applicants - 82

Total Change from last month - (+15)

SLASims.com - 29
Total Change from last month - (+2)

Non SLASims.com - 53
Total Changes from last month - (+13)

Website Apps -

Academy - 4 (+2 from previous month)
America - 4 (+4 from previous month)
Archangel – 1 (same as previous month)
Avenger - 2 (same as previous month)
Centauris - 6 (+4 from previous month)
FOR-1 - 4 (+2 from previous month)
Lee - 1 (+1 from previous month)
Lexington - 2 (-3 from previous month)
OPC - 1 (-1 from previous month)
Potemkin - 2 (-1 from previous month)
RanKuf - 2 (+2 from previous month)
Starbase 27 - 1 (-1 from previous month)
Stargate SG-4 - 5 (-10 from previous month)
Stargate SG-6 - 4 (+3 from previous month)
Vigilant - 2 (-1 from previous month)
Zealous - 3 (+3 from previous month)

Asimov Fleet - 2 (+2 from previous month)

EnterpriseSims.com - 2 (+2 from previous month)
StargateSims.com - 5 (+5 from previous month)

Estimated Group Size - 375 members

Group size change - (+20)
Retention rate of applicants - (24.39%)
*Adjusted Retention Rate of applicants - (31.25%)

*Adjusted Retention Rate (ARR) – Factors in the average loss of existing simmers per month at a rate of 0.62 members per sim per month. Our average drop per month tends to fall between .4 and 1 per sim per month so this may actually mean our ARR is slightly lower than it should be.

Growth was not too bad but retention was a bit light. I would prefer to see the group keep our adjusted retention at about 40%. Our 3 month unadjusted average is now 24.05 as we still make up for the horrible retention rate of May.

Number of Active sims – 26 (of 28. IKS RanKuf still to launch and OPC still to re-launch)
Sim Applications - 5
Sim change - (+1)

SLA announced the acceptance of the successful Wing Commander: Battle of Enigma.

Average crew size – 14.4231
Average crew size change - (+/- 0.76923)

* affected by the acceptance of a new sim and the light staffing on games still to launch / re-launch..

Average Live Action crew size - 14.75
Crew size change - (+ 0.5625)

Average PBEM crew size – 13.125
Crew size change - (+ 0.625)

Average MB crew size – 13.3333
Crew size change - (+/- 0.0)

We saw a growth in crew size on all fronts but MB. I am expecting more significant jumps in September.

Largest crew size - 30
Smallest crew size – 8

Simmer Breakdown:
AOL/AIM – 57.33% (214 Simmers)
Change – (+ .0.71%)

PBEM – 28.00% (105 Simmers)
Change – (- 0.17%)

IRC – 4.00% (15 Simmers)
Change – (+ 0.06%)

Message Boards – 10.67% (40 Simmers)
Change – (+ 0.06%)

At this point it would probably be prudent to concentrate on recruiting for the rest of the summer. Since the summer months are typically the slowest for sim groups, it would probably be wise to simply recruit and not launch more games until August.

Also, according to the numbers we should probably concentrate a bit more on advertising for the group as a whole and for the particular Fleets. In July we saw 29 apps through the SLA main site, bringing our 3 month average to 28.66 (a slight improvement). This is probably a resource we should be more focused on.

Our Fleet websites recruiting has brought a three month average of about 1.6667 applicants a month for the last three months. We should be more focused on these resources as it helps bridge the gap between simmers looking for larger groups and simmers looking for smaller groups. In addition we have the benefit of the Fleet Captains and another way for sims to interact.

We did see a great response from our two new genre focused sites, StargateSims.com and EnterpriseSims.com. Between the two, in the two weeks they were operational, we saw an additional 7 applicants. I strongly believe these will be great resources as time goes by.

III. Board Usage

The message boards for the SLA are one of the most important tools for showcasing activity and drawing interest for the group, as well as the individual Sims. As such each sim should be trying to make use of their boards as much as possible. Activity in this area can only lead to more applicants for your sim and a larger crew for you to work with.

This was an interesting month. Our average tends to be a little over 2,000 posts per month. For some reason we saw an incredible jump in July to over 4,000 posts. This month we came back to something closer to our average, as should be expected. I believe this average is growing slowly and hopefully this will reach an average of 3,000 posts per month in the near future.

Posts for July 2003 - 2327 posts
Change - (-1744)

Number of Users: 417

Highest General Posting:

1. SLA Lounge - 427 posts (first last month) - Awesome!
2. R & D Guild – 332 posts (not ranked last month) – Great job!
3. Voyager – 139 posts (third last month) – WTG LaFontaine!
4. Deep Space 9 – 101 posts (fourth last month) – Great job.
5. ST General – 80 (second last month) –Good job!

Highest Sim Posting: (ranked by a total of all boards assigned to game)

1. USS Zealous – 215 (not ranked last month) – Takes the lead from the champs!!!! AWESOME!!!
2. USS Centauris – 147 (first last month) – Great job!
3. USS Lionheart – 58 posts (third last month) – Look at that!
4. USS Lee – 45 posts (fifth last month) – Good job USS Lee
5. SG6 – 33 posts (third last month) – Good job!

We’re starting to see some competition here and it looks like live action games have finally gotten back on the boards! Our Message Board games are needing help. SG-6, Ark Royal, where are you guys at?

Remember that one of the reasons people sign up for your game is because of the activity they see on the boards. If they don’t see activity they may not request your game or even visit your website.

USS Potemkin, you are a great sim that has stood out in the SLA since we started. You are the August Sim of the Month!

IV. Website Stats

We have no stats for June due to the move to the new server, so we can’t do a monthly comparison, however these are the stats for the month of July. We will compare these stats to August during the September Reports.

Monthly Hits: 354,455
Change from Previous Month: Not Available

Daily Average Hits: 11,434
Change from Previous Month: Not Available

Monthly Visitors: 17,156
Change from Previous Month: Not Available

Daily Average Visitors: 553
Change from Previous Month: Not Available

Traffic is looking pretty good with almost 20,000 visitors a month. Not bad at all.

V. Fleet Updates

Changes keep on coming. Some changes this month!

The SLA accepted Wing Commander: Battle for Enigma into the group this month. This looks to be a great sim and has had close connections to the SLA for a while now.

Jay MacKenzie has retired as Expansion Chair. The SLA Council thanks him for all of his work over his term in office.

The SLA has launched two new genre specific websites: http://www.stargatesims.com and http://www.enterprisesims.com. These sites bring focus to two wonderful genres this group is focused on.

The July SLA Comm Monthly has hit the stands at http://monthly.slasims.com. Look for the August issue to be out later this week!

We hope the summer is treating you well and I hope everyone is spending some time outside enjoying the weather.

SLA Reports - September 3, 2003
This Report covers 8/1/03 - 8/31/03

Quote:
"...the warm welcome I received from the Lexington sim made me feel as if I have come home. I am thankful for this group.”
- Ensign Marc Malnekoff, Lexington NX-03.

August was real interesting for recruiting numbers. This was the tail end of summer, which would make one expect fewer recruits, however we saw 85 recruits sign up with about a 30% retention rate. The group actually grew by 20 members during a period where one would expect shrinkage. If we are seeing these numbers during the summer months I am almost frightened to think about the fall. We may have to consider launching more sims just to handle the continued influx.

And now, onto the numbers!

For the month of July 2003 -

Applicants - 85
Total Change from last month - (+3)

SLASims.com - 31
Total Change from last month - (+2)

Non SLASims.com - 54
Total Changes from last month - (+1)

Website Apps -

Academy - 1 (-3 from previous month)
Archangel – 1 (same as previous month)
Avenger - 2 (same as previous month)
Centauris - 4 (-2 from previous month)
Destiny – 5* (+5 from previous month) *Email Contact Apps
FOR-1 - 2 (-2 from previous month)
Lee - 5 (+4 from previous month)
Lexington - 4 (+2 from previous month)
RanKuf - 3 (+1 from previous month)
Starbase 27 - 1 (same as previous month)
Stargate SG-4 - 1 (-4 from previous month)
Stargate SG-6 - 4 (same as previous month)
Vigilant - 1 (-1 from previous month)
Wing Commander - 1 (+1 from previous month)
Zealous - 5 (+2 from previous month)

EnterpriseSims.com - 2 (same as previous month)
StargateSims.com - 12 (+7 from previous month)

Estimated Group Size - 395 members
Group size change - (+20)

Retention rate of applicants - (23.53%)
*Adjusted Retention Rate of applicants - (29.85%)

*Adjusted Retention Rate (ARR) – Factors in the average loss of existing simmers per month at a rate of 0.62 members per sim per month. Our average drop per month tends to fall between .4 and 1 per sim per month so this may actually mean our ARR is slightly lower than it should be.

Growth was not too bad but retention was a bit light. I would prefer to see the group keep our adjusted retention at about 40%. Our 3 month unadjusted average is now 31.89% as finally dropped the horrible retention rate of May.

Number of Active sims – 27 (of 29. OPC still to re-launch and Stargate SG8 to launch)

Sim Applications - 4
Sim change - (+1)

SLA announced the launch of Stargate SG8.

Average crew size – 15.1923
Average crew size change - (+ 0.76923)

* affected by the acceptance of a new sim and the light staffing on games still to launch / re-launch.

Average Live Action crew size - 15.1875
Crew size change - (+ 0.4375)

Average PBEM crew size – 13.625
Crew size change - (+ 0.5)

Average MB crew size – 13.3333
Crew size change - (+/- 0.0)

We saw a growth in crew size on all fronts but MB. I am a bit concerned about the lack of change for the MB Sims. Does this mean that someone is not keeping their staffing information up to date or are we just really seeing trouble with recruiting for some Sims? MB Hosts please feel free to talk to me about this and let me know what we can do to help.

Largest crew size - 30
Smallest crew size – 8

Simmer Breakdown:
AOL/AIM – 56.96% (225 Simmers)
Change – (- .0.37%)

PBEM – 28.86% (114 Simmers)
Change – (+ 0.86%)

IRC – 4.05% (16 Simmers)
Change – (+ 0.05%)

Message Boards – 10.13% (40 Simmers)
Change – (- 0.05%)

It’s interesting to see this shift. As time has gone on we have seen a slow, but steady, growth of the PBEM side of the SLA population. While the group on the whole has grown, this side has continued to show the fastest growth and the biggest shift in population. This year the growth of the PBEM division has been just incredible and I am very happy with the way this side of the group is developing.

We have also seen significant growth and success with the Stargate genre. As we prepare to launch our third Stargate sim I believe that we are just beginning to see what this side of the SLA will someday offer. Already there is discussion about two more PBEM games and a live action Stargate game. There is hope that all three of these will be launched over the next six months. Already the SLA has around 35 simmers in the Stargate games and we hope to raise that number to over 100 in the near future. I would suggest keeping an eye on StargateSims.com for more information.

III.

I believe we are beginning to see our average posting plateau around 3,000 posts per month but, since this was a summer month, this should mean our Fall/Winter posting will be even higher. We shall see.

Highest General Posting:

3. R & D Guild – 136 posts (second last month) – Great job!
4. Town Hall – 101 posts (not ranked last month) – Great job… umm…. me?
5. General News – 91 (not ranked last month) – Fantastic Pam and Taneth!

Highest Sim Posting: (ranked by a total of all boards assigned to game)

1. USS Zealous – 737 (first last month) – HOLY SUBMIT BUTTON BATMAN!!!
2. Wing Commander BFE – 260 (not ranked last month) – AWESOME!
3. USS Centauris – 222 posts (second last month) – Great job Centauris!
4. Stargate SG8 – 44 posts (not ranked last month) – Nice jump in!
5. USS Lionheart – 37 posts (third last month) – Look at that!

I’m looking at the USS Zealous month and all I can say is “UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE”. You folks were sim of the month just eight months ago so I can’t do that again yet, but allow me to say I am just astonished and amazed. You should all be very proud of what you have been doing over the last couple of months. That is just amazing work folks.

Our Message Board games need help. SG-4, Ark Royal, where are you guys at? Only SG6 is stepping up!

Remember that one of the reasons people sign up for your game is because of the activity they see on the boards. If they don’t see activity they may not request your game or even visit your website.

Wing Commander BFE, you are looking excellent and already making a great name for your game. You are the September SOTM!!

IV. Website Stats

Let’s see how we did.

Monthly Hits: 284,797
Change from Previous Month: - 69,658

Daily Average Hits: 9,187
Change from Previous Month: - 2,247

A bit of a drop but still significant hit traffic.

Monthly Visitors: 14,650
Change from Previous Month: - 2,506

Daily Average Visitors: 472
Change from Previous Month: -81

Traffic is looking good even with the slight drop off. I expect September will see an increase.

V. Fleet Updates

Changes keep on coming. Some changes this month!

The SLA Council approved the upgrade of our status to Full Member in the Simming League, a community of Simming Groups gathered together for diplomacy.

The USS Cassini has moved to a new sim time, Sundays at 10pm EST.

The USS Destiny has moved to a new sim time, Wednesdays at 11:30pm EST.

The SLA will be launching Stargate SG8 in the next couple of weeks. This will help fill out our Stargate sim line up.

The SLA Council and hosts have approved the First Amendment to our Charter, this will remove the requirement of AOL access for Public Relations Chair candidates.

I hope everyone is ready for the fall and best of luck to all of you returning to school!

SLA Reports - October 8, 2003
This Report covers 9/1/03 - 9/30/03

Quote:
" ...it's (the SLA) a jewel to have in the simming community. Not only is their website very professionally designed, but their members and hosts are very welcoming and friendly. The quality of their sims is second to none and their leadership is very communicable. The logs their players write are full of imagination and love for the Star Trek universe"
- Jon Shuni, Commanding Officer - FSF

We saw an interesting September this year as recruiting seems to have leveled out in the 80’s. One has to wonder if the summer drop off theorem really holds.

For the month of September 2003 -
Applicants - 80
Total Change from last month - (-5)
SLASims.com - 24
Total Change from last month - (-7)
Non SLASims.com - 56
Total Changes from last month - (+2)

Website Apps -
Academy - 2 (+1 from previous month)
America - 2 (+2 from previous month)
Avenger - 3 (+1 from previous month)
Centauris - 4 (same as previous month)
Lee - 2 (-3 from previous month)
Lexington - 3 (-1 from previous month)
OPC - 1 (+1 from previous month)
RanKuf - 4 (+1 from previous month)
Starbase 27 - 1 (same as previous month)
Stargate SG-4 - 3 (+2 from previous month)
Stargate SG-6 - 1 (-3 from previous month)
Stargate SG-8 - 3 (+3 from previous month)
Wing Commander - 3 (+2 from previous month)
Zealous - 2 (-3 from previous month)

Asimov Fleet - 2 (+2 from previous month)
Shakaar Fleet - 2 (+2 from previous month)

EnterpriseSims.com - 1 (-1 from previous month)
StargateSims.com - 17 (+5 from previous month)

Estimated Group Size - 422 members
Group size change - (+27)
Retention rate of applicants - (33.75%)
*Adjusted Retention Rate of applicants - (44.63%)

*Adjusted Retention Rate (ARR) – Factors in the average loss of existing simmers per month at a rate of 0.62 members per sim per month. Our average drop per month tends to fall between .4 and 1 per sim per month so this may actually mean our ARR is slightly lower than it should be.

Our growth was a bit stronger this month but with a higher retention rate, which is a very good thing. This may be construed as a sign that our retention rate is increasing, which will take the stress off of total marketing and make it easier for sims to grow.

Number of Active Sims – 29 (of 3, OPC and Columbia are preparing to re-launch)
Sim Applications – 4 (same as last month)
Host Applications - 5
Sim change - (+2)
SLA accepted the USS Lancelot and USS Shrike.

Average crew size – 14.6207
Average crew size change - (- 0.57162)
* affected by the acceptance of a new Sims.

Average Live Action crew size - 15.5
Crew size change - (+ 0.3125)
Average PBEM crew size – 13.625
Crew size change - (+/- 0.0)
Average MB crew size – 10.6667
Crew size change – (-2.66667)

It seems that group size grew and average staffing went down just slightly, but our major drop off seemed to be in the MB area after a roster clean up by Stargate SG4. It should still be pointed out that our average staffing looks excellent and even our lowest format staffing is still fairly strong.

Largest crew size - 30
Smallest crew size – 6

Simmer Breakdown:
AOL/AIM – 55.21% (233 Simmers)
Change – (- 1.12%)
PBEM – 34.12% (144 Simmers)
Change – (+ 5.26%)
IRC – 3.08% (13 Simmers)
Change – (- 0.98%)
Message Boards – 7.58% (32 Simmers)
Change – (- 2.55%)

Those that have watched our breakdown for the last 10 months have seen a steady increase in our PBEM division and a sporadic increase in the Message Board area. This year we seem to have grown almost across the board (with the exception of IRC) but our largest growth area has remained PBEM. While we have launched or accepted new sims in that format we have also maintained or improved our average staffing. In January of this year our average PBEM staffing was 13.1765 per game but this has grown to 14.5517 during a period where we expanded tremendously in this area. That is a very encouraging statistic to see.

III. Board Usage

The message boards for the SLA are one of the most important tools for showcasing activity and drawing interest for the group, as well as the individual Sims. As such each sim should be trying to make use of their boards as much as possible. Activity in this area can only lead to more applicants for your sim and a larger crew for you to work with.

We saw a great deal of activity this month, especially concentrated in a few specific boards such as the SLA Lounge, the Wing Commander boards and the USS Zealous boards.

SLA Reports - December 3, 2003 - October Reports
This Report covers 10/1/03 - 10/31/03

Quote:
" The SLA is a wonderful mix of world wide contribution..."
-Captian Edgar "English Dick" Dickens, Firefly: Monarch

I apologize for this report being a month behind. I am releasing the reports for both October and November today, thanks to Zania Ja'arda, who will be refered to as my hero from now on. She actually compiled the board numbers for November and saved me a great amount of work. Thank you my hero!

II. Recruiting and Staffing

October was actually one of the biggest application months we have seen. Amazingly this occured without any increase in advertising. This was probably spurred by many factors including the increased message board activity and the improved positioning of some specific sim websites (most especially Stargate). As you look over the numbers I hope you will be as pleased as I was.

For the month of October 2003 -
Applicants - 88
Total Change from last month - (+8)
SLASims.com - 29
Total Change from last month - (+5)
Non SLASims.com - 59
Total Changes from last month - (+3)

Website Apps -
Academy - 1 (-1 from previous month)
America - 2 (same as previous month)
Avenger - 1 (-2 from previous month)
Centauris - 6 (+2 from previous month)
Lee - 1 (-1 from previous month)
Lexington - 3 (same as previous month)
RanKuf - 5 (+1 from previous month)
Starbase 27 - 2 (+1 from previous month)
Stargate SG-4 - 1 (-2 from previous month)
Stargate SG-8 - 8 (+5 from previous month)
Wing Commander - 2 (+1 from previous month)
Zealous - 9 (+7 from previous month)

Asimov Fleet - 2 (same as previous month)

EnterpriseSims.com - 3 (+2 from previous month)
StargateSims.com - 13 (-4 from previous month)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
If we look at the applications by specifics we can get a better idea of where we are attracting gamers and what is working. Please understand that I have used r to represent the vinculum (line showing infinite repetition in decimals).

Fleet Site Apps: 2 (3 month average was at 2 apps per month through the fleets)

* This number could be much higher if we did attempt to market these websites more. Currently we are putting out very few ads for the Fleets and that means we are not taking advantage of a huge potential recruiting area. Hopefully, when Pam's new Fleet System is introduced, we will see more of a push for this aspect of the SLA and thus more applications.

Stargate Sim Website Apps: 9 (3 month average: 7)
- Total Stargate Apps: 22 (3 month average: 21)

Enterprise Sim Website Apps: 3 (3 month average: 3.33r)
- Total Enterprise Apps: 6 (3 month average: 5.33r)

* I expect these numbers to increase after the new Columbia NX-04 website goes on-line. Currently we offer two websites to attract Enterprise simmers specifically. It is reasonable to expect recruiting to increase as marketing increases, as has always been the case with this group.

Trek Live Action Sim Website Apps: 4 (3 month average: 8)
Trek PBEM Sim Website Apps: 26 (3 month average: 21.33r)

* If we look at these numbers we see a shift occuring in our group. Our PBEM sims are seeing a growth in applicants while our live action games are seeing a lowering of the same. Now, we did just cut 5 live action sims so this should help resolve any issues or concerns on the live action side but there is still an issue here. We may be focusing heavily on marketing our PBEM division while not focusing enough on the live action side. Basically we need to find a few people to put out ads for the live action games every week. This should take a grand total of about 20 minutes a week so anyone wishing to volunteer should contact me.

Sci-Fi Applications (non-Trek/non-Stargate): 2 (2 month average: 2.5)

So looking over these numbers we see that our marketing attempts for Stargate and PBEM Star Trek seem to be going extremely well. Our general Sci-Fi marketing seems to be going decent (considering this only included Wing Commander at this point and only for two months). We do need to concentrate on marketing our Fleet websites and our live action sim websites.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Estimated Group Size - 403 members
Group size change - (-19)
Retention rate of applicants - (**.**%)
*Adjusted Retention Rate of applicants - (**.**%)

*Adjusted Retention Rate (ARR) - Factors in the average loss of existing simmers per month at a rate of 0.62 members per sim per month. Our average drop per month tends to fall between .4 and 1 per sim per month so this may actually mean our ARR is slightly lower than it should be.

At the end of October three games were removed from the SLA: the Archangel, Aries and Destiny. Because of this we saw a drop in membership numbers and thus our retention rates are more difficult to determine. Since we lost three games but still only saw a group size drop of about 19 gamers. As such I am of the opinion that our retention rate stayed extremely strong this month.

Number of Active Sims - 27 (of 29, OPC and Columbia are preparing to re-launch)
Sim Applications - 5 (+1 from last month)
Host Applications - 4 (-1 from last month)

Sim change - (-2)
Archangel, Aries and Destiny removed.
Firefly: Monarch added at end of month.

Average crew size - 13.897
Average crew size change - (- 0.7237)

Average Live Action crew size - 12.688 15.5
Crew size change - (- 2.812)
Average PBEM crew size - 15.125
Crew size change - (+ 1.5)
Average MB crew size - 10
Crew size change - (-.6667)

Largest crew size - 23
Smallest crew size - 7

Simmer Breakdown:
AOL/AIM - 48.64% (196 Simmers)
Change - (- 6.57%)
PBEM - 40.69% (164 Simmers)
Change - (+ 6.57%)
IRC - 3.23% (13 Simmers)
Change - (+ 0.15%)
Message Boards - 7.44% (30 Simmers)
Change - (- 0.14%)

Once again we see the continued shift in our group. PBEM continues to grow significantly.

III. Board Usage

The message boards for the SLA are one of the most important tools for showcasing activity and drawing interest for the group, as well as the individual Sims. As such each sim should be trying to make use of their boards as much as possible. Activity in this area can only lead to more applicants for your sim and a larger crew for you to work with.

II. Recruiting and Staffing

November seemed to go extremely well with a great deal of applications coming in. The goal every month is at least 70 apps but we're surpassing that by a large margin every month, which is something to be extremely happy with.

Thanks again go to Zania Ja'arda, who will be refered to as my hero from now on. She compiles the board activity numbers for this report!

II. Recruiting and Staffing

As always our goal is at least 70 applications per month. This month we surpassed that by 18 applications. However, the key to stability in our staffing is to see strong retention from our application pool. The December reports included an error as it did not exclude the removal of the Academy and Schindler games. There was also some overhead in the report generation for the OPC and FOR1 games. Basically I needed to update the software and have now done so. As such the numbers were a bit off. I have adjusted the comparison November numbers in order to give us a more accurate look at our positioning.

For the month of December 2003 -
Applicants - 88

Stargate SG-6 - 3 (+1 from previous month)
Stargate SG-8 - 5 (-3 from previous month)

Fleet Websites
Asimov Fleet - 4 (+3 from previous month)
Cochrane Fleet - 1 (+1 from previous month)

Genre Websites
StargateSims.com - 24 (+5 from previous month)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
If we look at the applications by specifics we can get a better idea of where we are attracting gamers and what is working. Please understand that I have used r to represent the vinculum (line showing infinite repetition in decimals).

Fleet Site Apps: 5 (3 month average was at 2.66r apps per month through the fleets)

Stargate Sim Website Apps: 17 (3 month average: 12.66r)
- Total Stargate Apps: 41 (3 month average: 31.33r)

The Stargate application pool has increased dramatically since September, actually doubline. This area shows incredible growth and has attracted many people to the SLA.

Enterprise Sim Website Apps: 3 (3 month average: 5)
- Total Enterprise Apps: 6 (3 month average: 5)

* I expect these numbers to increase after the new Columbia NX-04 website goes on-line. Currently we offer two websites to attract Enterprise simmers specifically. It is reasonable to expect recruiting to increase as marketing increases, as has always been the case with this group. We have, however, not concentrated on the Enterprise marketing much as of late. This is an area we have dropped the ball and have seen fewer applications because of this. We must work to resolve this situation.

Trek Live Action Sim Website Apps: 7 (3 month average: 6.33r)
Trek PBEM Sim Website Apps: 11 (3 month average: 18.33r)

* Our live action and PBEM sim applications are beginning to flatten out. Live action had been going down while PBEM had been going up, but now we are evening out. We offer 23 Star Trek games in live action, PBEM and message board. As such we need to bring in a minimum of 23 Star Trek applications a month. This December we brought in 38 which, after figuring in retention rates, still allows for significant help in staffing these games. At this point we could probably handle a few more Star Trek games in PBEM but we should not rush to expand too quickly.

Sci-Fi Applications (non-Trek/non-Stargate): 4 (3 month average: 2.66r)

* We have seen a slight improvement in this area, however, we do need to concentrate more on this and we need to get a website up for the Star Wars game.

Again, we see some improvements but we still have some areas that need work. Stargate recruiting is simply unbelievable. Our main website is still doing a great job as an application resource. The three month average for our SLASims.com website sits at 24.33r applications a month and it brought in 22.73% of our applications this December. Trek PBEM is still generating a great deal of interest and live action is looking better. We still need to concentrate on advertising for our fleet websites, our Enterprise Era games and we need to get websites up for our Star Wars game and get applications up for others.

Retention rate of applicants - (11.36%)
*Adjusted Retention Rate of applicants - (14.29%)

*Adjusted Retention Rate (ARR) - Factors in the average loss of existing simmers per month at a rate of 0.62 members per sim per month. Our average drop per month tends to fall between .4 and 1 per sim per month so this may actually mean our ARR is slightly lower than it should be.

Number of Active Sims - 25 (of 29, Columbia is preparing to re-launch, OPC and FOR1 are on hiatus and SG-4 is relaunching)

Message Boards - 13.73% (46 Simmers)

Once again we see the continued shift in our group. PBEM continues to grow as does the Stargate Division.

III. Board Usage

The message boards for the SLA are one of the most important tools for showcasing activity and drawing interest for the group, as well as the individual Sims. As such each sim should be trying to make use of their boards as much as possible. Activity in this area can only lead to more applicants for your sim and a larger crew for you to work with.

SLA Reports - February 8, 2004 - January Reports
This Report covers 1/1/04 - 1/31/04

Quote:
"I don't believe in the no win thingamajig"
- Quinn Maloray (SG-4, IKS RanKuf)

Thanks again go to Zania Ja'arda, who will be refered to as my hero from now on. She compiles the board activity numbers for this report!

II. Recruiting and Staffing

As always our goal is at least 70 applications per month. This month we surpassed that by 43 applications. The correct phrase to describe this would include the s-word followed by "load". As always the key to growth and stability is retention of these applications. In that respect we still saw great success.

For the month of January 2004 -
Applicants - 113
Total Change from last month - (+25)
SLASims.com - 23
Total Change from last month - (+3)
Non SLASims.com - 90
Total Changes from last month - (+22)

Website Apps -

Star Trek Sims

America - 1 (same previous month)
Avenger - 1 (+1 from previous month)
Centauris - 3 (-2 from previous month)
Lee - 2 (-1 from previous month)
Lexington - 1 (-2 from previous month)
RanKuf - 3 (+3 from previous month)
Starbase 27 - 2 (+2 from previous month)
Zealous - 6 (+4 from previous month)

Stargate Sims
Stargate SG-4 - 12 (+3 from previous month)
Stargate SG-6 - 2 (-1 from previous month)
Stargate SG-8 - 4 (-1 from previous month)

Sci-Fi Sims
Firefly: Monarch - 7 (+3 from previous month)

Fleet Websites
Asimov Fleet - 1 (-3 from previous month)
Shakaar Fleet - 1 (+1 from previous month)

Genre Websites
StargateSims.com - 44 (+20 from previous month)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
If we look at the applications by specifics we can get a better idea of where we are attracting gamers and what is working. Please understand that I have used r to represent the vinculum (line showing infinite repetition in decimals).

Fleet Site Apps: 2 (3 month average was at 2.66r apps per month through the fleets)

Stargate Sim Website Apps: 18 (3 month average: 15.66r)
- Total Stargate Apps: 62 (3 month average: 44.66r)

The Stargate application pool has increased dramatically since September, now almost tripling. This area shows incredible growth and has attracted many people to the SLA. This month more than one half of our applications were for Stargate while only 13% of our games are Stargate related. This is an incredible abundance and means that if our hosts are quick to respond to applications each of these games can be over-filled in almost no time.

Enterprise Sim Website Apps: 1 (3 month average: 3.33r)
- Total Enterprise Apps: 1 (3 month average: 3.33)

* I expect these numbers to increase after the new Columbia NX-04 website goes on-line. Currently we offer two websites to attract Enterprise simmers specifically. It is reasonable to expect recruiting to increase as marketing increases, as has always been the case with this group. We have, however, not concentrated on the Enterprise marketing much as of late. This is an area we have dropped the ball and have seen fewer applications because of this. We must work to resolve this situation.

Trek Live Action Sim Website Apps: 4 (3 month average: 6.33r)
Trek PBEM Sim Website Apps: 15 (3 month average: 14.66r)

* Our live action and PBEM sim applications are beginning to flatten out. Live action had been going down while PBEM had been going up, but now we are evening out. We offer 23 Star Trek games in live action, PBEM and message board. As such we need to bring in a minimum of 23 Star Trek applications a month. This December we brought in 38 which, after figuring in retention rates, still allows for significant help in staffing these games. At this point we could probably handle a few more Star Trek games in PBEM but we should not rush to expand too quickly.

I do think our live action application rate is lower than it should be. The hosts of live action Trek sims who need crew need to begin helping us with advertising. I put out the majority of our ads on the sites ranked most important, but I am only one person so I tend to focus on our main website and genre websites. Should hosts in need of recruits help by advertising their game and their website they should see an increase in the number of applications coming through their site.

Sci-Fi Applications (non-Trek/non-Stargate): 7 (3 month average: 4.33r)

* We have seen an improvement in this area, however, we do need to concentrate more on this and we need to get a website up for the Star Wars game. The Firefly game seems to attract the most interest with but a few ads on different sites. Wing Commander sees recruits when we can place ads for this game. Star Wars is not able to recieve tracked apps at this point as we do not have a site for this game.

Again, we see some improvements but we still have some areas that need work. Stargate recruiting is simply unbelievable. Our main website is still doing a great job as an application resource. We need the hosts of the Star Trek live action games to help us by advertising their games, we need to get a site up for the Star Wars game (and to advertise it) and we need to focus more on the Enterprise games and the Fleet advertisements.

Message Boards - 11.27 (40 Simmers)

Once again we see the continued shift in our group. PBEM continues to grow as does the Stargate Division. Who would have ever thought we'd have more PBEM games/simmers than live action?

Fantastic job to all the games! It's amazing how the SLA is changing. Three of our top five posting games are not Star Trek. I think the SLA is becoming something different than a Star Trek group offering other games. I think we are a full simming community offering a diversity of games. It's been one year since the last time this game was the Sim of the Month and their activity has just gone through the roof. They truly stand out. USS Zealous, great job! You are the Sim of the Month!

A new issue of the SLA Weekly is out! #78 again has another honor, as our very own Ti'ana Sullivan's log was chosen as "Log of the Week!" Also, our Chief Medical Officer, Jake Sjet, was interviewed for an article on the Dragon Squadron!

You can check out the issue by visiting this link: http://weekly.slasims.com. Enjoy!

Remember, if you feel like your log may be good enough to make "Log of the Week," e-mail me and let me know the title of the log. I will send it in to the editors of the Weekly, and you may see your name up there!
