Welcome & Purpose

Welcome to the USS Zealous, a Prometheous class vessel. This ship has diversified crew of adventurers with different abilities and positions on the ship. We hope that you will add to the overall presence that make up our crew by participating often in our SLA Sim.

The purpose of this guide is to help new crew members gain a better understanding of the Zealous and how simming works. This is an expansion of the original "Welcome to the USS Zealous" announcement.

Ship Info & Background

The Prometheus class is a design with a lot of cutting edge technology, including Multi-Vector Assault Mode. This feature was seen in the Voyager episode, "Message In A Bottle." In that episode, Voyager's EMH transferred his program to the prototype, the USS Prometheus, and worked with the Prometheus EMH to fend off Romulans who had stolen the ship.

A deck listing for the Zealous, including room assignments and available shuttles, can be found here:

With all of it's features, the Zealous lives up to it's motto: Pugio in Averso Belli - Weapon Used To Avoid War.

Within the SLA, the Zealous actually had a different beginning. It started out as "United Sims", which was a joint effort - two ships, the USS Zealous and the USS Centauris - working together as a single sim.

As the SLA expanded, it was decided to re-launch both the Zealous and the Centauris as separate sims, leading us to where we currently are today.

A biography is one of the basic, yet most important elements of simming. It helps others get an idea of what your character is like, which can be important when they want to interact with that character.

A lot of people consider their character biography before they join, while others deal with it after the fact.

If you've never written a character biography before, think about the skills that you'd like your character to offer to the Zealous. What is the character's history and background? What is the personality like, or how they interact with others? Does the character have any hobbies?

Generally, the more you can flesh out about your character, the better off you will be in the long run!

Examples of crew biographies can be found at these links:

Crew Bios - All in one thread:

Crew Bios - Command, Helm, Operations:

Crew Bios - Engineering, Science, Medical, Counseling:

Crew Bios - Tactical, Security, Intelligence, Civilian:

Alex Ducane has taken the time to create an online crew roster, which looks outstanding! This is a great resource to check who serves in which department, especially if you've misplaced or deleted the weekly roster that is sent to everyone. Crew bios can also be viewed through this site:

Once you've written your bio, post it to the main Zealous forum at:

Two more points to keep in mind:

1) Try to find a balance for your character when writing your bio. The intial tendency may be to give the character all good/positive points (i.e. extremely smart, can do anything, etc). Unfortunately, this could put you on the border of the dreaded SuperHero Syndrome (SHS), which is frowned upon within the SLA.

To offset this, try throwing in a couple of negative aspects or weaknesses. Perhaps your character has a deep, dark secret? Maybe he/she has a phobia? These elements can also be a useful tool to help develop your character!

2) As events happen aboard the Zealous, characters grow and change. As such, bios should be updated from time to time to reflect these developments. If you want a promotion, remember to update your bio! (More information on promotions will follow.)

Logs & Joint Logs

If you've never simmed before, you may be asking yourself, "How do I interact with the others?" "How do I get started?"

A "log," or a "post" as it is sometimes referred to, is what you write. It is a synopsis of how your character reacted to events taking place while you are aboard the ship. In addition to reacting to main events, you can have your character interact with other crew members, explore the holodeck, relax in the lounge, etc.

Most people aboard the Zealous tend to write their logs in what is known as "Storytelling Mode." You often write more with this style, but it helps to create a better picture of the action that is going on within your log and can involve other characters. When it's done, it generally reads like a short story.

The other method of writing is "Narrative Mode," which is often more of a first person perspective. This can be used if a single post was a personal or ship log that your character created.

Aboard the Zealous, we do allow for minor controlling of other characters, as long as it is within reason. More often than not, it is used when characters acknowledge an order that another character might have given, or to provide a simple, short answer to a question that your character asked.

Unless permission is expressly given, anything more than minor use of other characters can often upset other participants, and is highly frowned upon by the SLA.

Sometimes, you may see someone using the term "Off" or "OOC" at the end of a log. This is an indication that the actions of their character has concluded, and what follows are notes to the other participants.

If this is used at the beginning of a log, or in the middle of it, it's the equivelent to pausing a VCR. In most of those instances, "On" is used to signify that the viewpoint from the character is starting again.

Also, you may occasionally see the term "Tag" used at the end of a log. This is generally a way of alerting certain individuals that they need to respond, but it is not an exclusive list. Everyone can jump in! Occasionally, there may be an instance where someone may request that no other characters try to get involved, but those are very rare.

When you finish writing your log, it's best to try and give it an interesting title. A suggestion is to have it reflect the events that you responded to. A good title will entice others to read what you've written.

After this, you would need to e-mail your log to:

This is a mailing list. All members of the crew are subscribed to it, and will receive your log. After you've sent it to the list, it becomes part of the archive, which you can view by going to:

You are also welcome to post your logs on the Zealous forums as a way to showcase what you've done!

Another version of a log is what is called a "joint log." It follows the same principles as listed above, but the only difference is that two or more people write the log together.

Such logs can be created via e-mail between yourself and another participant, but a faster way to construct one is via Instant Messaging (IMs).

Since this is an e-mail sim, it is not a requirement that you use an instant messaging program. However, if you are interested in acquiring one, I would highly recommend Trillian, which is available at and It is a multi-platform IM program which is capable of running all of the major IM programs at the same time (Yahoo Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger, ICQ). Best of all, the basic version is highly functional and FREE!

Promotions & Forum Ranks

Promotions aboard the Zealous are a reflection of your activity within the sim. Bio updates and logs are the primary factors considered when a person is promoted, but is not the final tool used in those decisions.

The qualifications for promotion are as follows:

* Ensign – No requirement, beginning position
* Lieutenant Junior Grade – 1 bio and 10 logs
* Lieutenant – 1 bio update and 20 logs (after promotion)
* Lieutenant First Class - an additional bio update and 25 logs (after promotion) and recomendation of XO or CO
* Lieutenant Commander - an additional bio update and 30 logs (after promotion) and recomendation of XO and CO

Promotions will be handed out at the conclusion at every mission. Some may be at a formal gathering, while others may be less formal.

Remember, if you wish to be promoted, become a department head, or to someday become a sim host, activity is the only way to achieve this.

Getting a higher rank is desirable, but try not to spam the mailing list with logs just to get your quota. Have a specific objective in mind when you post a log - a theme. Ask yourself the following questions:

What am I trying to do with this log?
Am I trying to establish my position or reaction to the CO's latest scenario?
Am I doing a background story to establish something about my character?
Am I telling a story to give my co-simmers a chuckle?

Generally, you will find that a well written log will be easy to give a title to, so try thinking along those lines when you are writing one.

Also, as you work toward earning your promotion, try to keep in mind the golden rule: Don't spoil someone else's fun. Be considerate, respectful, enjoy the company of other characters, and be someone who's company they will enjoy as well.

If you haven't done so already, it is strongly suggested that you do not include a rank within your login name when you sign up for an account here on the SLA forums. Unlike some other message boards, this system does not allow someone to change their login name.

Registering will allow you to participate in polls, as we may have one from time to time in the Zealous forum.

Just like aboard the Zealous, you will have a rank on the forum. It is important that you do not be confused between ranks within the sim, and here on the boards!

The ranks here on the boards are based on the number of posts you make throughout all of the SLA forums. Here is a list of the number of posts that you need to make in order to earn a higher rank:

0 posts - Cadet
30 posts - Ensign
70 posts - Lieutenant Junior Grade
150 posts - Lieutenant
250 posts - Lieutenant Commander
400 posts - Commander
600 posts - Captain
850+ posts - Fleet Captain

Get Involved & Fun Stuff!

One of the most gratifying feelings within any sim is a feeling of belonging - to know that you are a welcome part of the growing community, or what seems like a tight-knit "family."

The best way to become part of that community is to get involved! With the Zealous, there are a number of ways to do that:

1) Contribute to the storyline summary! There's not much to it - just a few sentences, or paragraphs, highlighting recent events aboard the Zealous. Adding to this will help other simmers who want to know where we are in the storyline.

2) Participate in or start a new discussion in the Zealous Crew Lounge, located here:

3) Join in on one of the forum games! There are several of them already, and there are plans to add more over time. Here is a quick link to all of the games that are currently available:

4) Suggest a storyline to the Storyline Suggestions thread! We plan on using all ideas, so your story could be picked!

5) Develop a new species, planet, or creature that the ship can encounter, and post the details here:

6) Find detailed information on canon species, planets, or creatures, and share it so we can see if we can integrate some of that within our storylines!

Alex Ducane has graciously created an alternate forum for the Zealous, which has a much better layout than what we are currently limited to within the SLA boards. You can find that forum here:

Feel free to stop by there and sign up!

Also, if you're looking for something fun, and want to help expand your character a bit, try coming up with a catch phrase! A few of us have already done it and they can be found here:

Everyone loves a good party, even aboard the Zealous! Share important dates with us in this thread, like your character's birthday, etc, and we'll make sure that you get a special greeting on that day!

What's more fun than jokes? Or funny pictures? Even those cute smilies that you see on most boards? Enjoy what's here, or find some elsewhere on the net and share it with others!

We've got to find those jokes and images somewhere on the net! If you come across a site that you can't just wait to share with others, post it in our Link Library:

Speaking of fun, here's a place where you can share humorous quotes with everyone:

Here's a place where you can find inspirational quotes:

And ones from Star Trek!

Also, if you have AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), Ti'ana Sullivan has created a Zealous skin that you can use with the program:

Great job, Ti'ana! It looks fantastic!

Everything that has been detailed within this welcome message are recommendations. There is no one set or perfect way of simming. The reigns are fitted pretty loosely, and we have a lot of freedom!

The mailing list is mainly fur us to have fun reading and writing about the wonderful Star Trek universe. Explore it in character, and read as others do the same!

The forum is a growing community where we can take a break from our characters, show off the posts we make on the mailstring, hang out, and just have fun!

Are you ready to do your first log? Once again, welcome aboard!

If you missed any of the links previously mentioned, they're all included again at the end of this thread. That way, you don't have to backtrack and re-read through everything just to find what you're looking for. Have fun!
