Opening #1: PADD Contributor

Responsibilities:
If you enjoy searching web sites, this is the perfect opportunity for you!

News about Star Trek, the actors, novels, etc., can be found on various web sites across the internet. The purpose of the PADD is to serve as a hub for all of the news, easily accessible by SLA members.

Contributions are made to the site (http://news.slasims.com/). When you submit an article, make sure you include the URL of the site where you found the news.

Contribution does not have to occur on a daily basis, nor are there limits as to how many people can contribute to the PADD, or the number of contributions a single person can make! Star Trek familiarity is helpful, but not necessary.

This is the only volunteeer opportunity where you can participate immediately without having to contact Seth!

Opening #2: Guild Moderator
Specific Guilds: Research and Development, Artist, Gaming
Reports To: Guild Director
Requirements: Three months of service within the SLA, and a letter of recommendation from a current SLA host if applicant is not currently hosting an SLA sim
Responsibilities:
These will be the people in charge of the specific SLA Guild. They will work to see these Guilds as active as possible and to attract members to these Guilds. They will be expected to drive discussions, head up projects and more. They should be posting advertisements about their particular Guild in the Recruiting area of the SLA Lounge at least once a month (if the Guild has less than 6 active members) and to submit a report on their Guild activity every month to the Guild Director. These people will be afforded whatever tools they need in order to drive their Guild including a website, ftp access to said website, an slasims.com email address and whatever else they require.

This is not just about making sure the boards are active, but instead about headlining projects and getting people involved. The Gaming Guild Moderator should be starting discussions about running games with SLA members, then scheduling these then running them. The Artist's Guild Moderator should be looking for projects to get involved in (such as website development for games or creating logos for games and fleets) and getting people to sign up for the Guild in order to have fun working on such projects. All those involved with such projects will be discussed in the SLA Comm Monthly when the Guild Moderator submits his or her report to the Guild Director. The Guild Moderators have complete freedom to do what they can to drive their Guild and to attract members.

Opening #3: Assistant Guild Moderator
Specific Guilds: Research and Development, Authors, Gaming, Artist
Reports To: Guild Moderator, Guild Director
Requirements: Three months of service within the SLA, and a letter of recommendation from a current SLA host if applicant is not currently hosting an SLA sim
Responsibilities:
This will be almost the same as the Guild Moderator position and they will work together with the Guild Moderator to see the Guild's succeed. The resources offered to the Guild Moderators will also be available to those in this position.

Opening #4: Chat Room Moderator
Specific Media: AOL/AIM and IRC
Requirements: Three months of service within the SLA, and a letter of recommendation from a current SLA host if applicant is not currently hosting an SLA sim
Responsibilities:
With the launch of the IRC room, the SLA is looking to launch a similar AOL/AIM chat room. As such, the SLA is currently looking for Chat Room Moderators to cover both AOL/AIM and IRC chat rooms. These will be heavily advertised on the SLA site and forums, so one should expect to see decent traffic from week to week.

Volunteers are needed to moderate and host different activities in these chats. There is currently a preference to get see two IRC activities and one AOL/AIM per week. These will not be sims but activities that the moderators can set up. Chats can range from general discussion, to trivia, to other activities you think will draw interest.

Teams of two are preferred per activity, and there is a desire to set this up as a weekly occurance. If you apply, you can determine what activity you wish to host, and what your available hours are. The chat time will be determined ahead of time, depending on moderator availability, with the duration of each one lasting one to two hours. If you are interested, please make sure you have the time to commit to this endeavour.

Activities could include a "general lounge," a la Quark's Bar, where people drift in and hang out in character having fun; various types of games including but not limited to trivia, jeopardy, etc. This will be left up to the chat moderators.

The SLA is a community of simmers and the goal here is to give the simmers more of a chance to interact outside of direct gaming. This should be a great way to get to know people in other sims and to have fun. We also hope that activities such as these will help draw more attention to the IRC side of the SLA and help people become familiar with this system.

Opening #5: Academy Director
Specific Media: Various
Requirements: Must have hosting experience in the SLA, and be a current simmer or host on an SLA sim.
Responsibilities:
The Academy, once launched, will become a new way of helping gamers learn the basics of simming if they have never simmed before. Joining the Academy will not be a requirement for simmers when they join the SLA, but it will still be offered.

Hosts may decide not to allow an applicant to join unless they have completed the Academy, or they may ask a simmer to attend the Academy while still participating on their sim. This would allow gamers to still participate immediately, while learning the basics they may not yet understand.

Some of the specific requirements and responsibilities include:

- Must be an XO or a CO on a sim, although this position is recommended for an XO
- Will be responsible for the staffing of the Academy (finding Instructors with the assistance of the Personnel Chair)
- Will be responsible for maintaining and modifying the lesson plans and goals of each course (what should be taught)
- Report directly to the Fleet Status Chair

For the most part the Academy will be completely under the guidance of this person. They will make the final decision for almost everything related to the Academy. It will basically be left in their hands but they will be given every bit of support possible. You ask for something, we'll do our best to get it done.

Opening #6: Academy Instructor

Requirements: Six months of service within the SLA, as a simmer on one of the various SLA sims
Responsibilities:
The Academy, once launched, will become a new way of helping gamers learn the basics of simming if they have never simmed before. Joining the Academy will not be a requirement for simmers when they join the SLA, but it will still be offered.

Hosts may decide not to allow an applicant to join unless they have completed the Academy, or they may ask a simmer to attend the Academy while still participating on their sim. This would allow gamers to still participate immediately, while learning the basics they may not yet understand.

Some of the specific requirements and responsibilities include:

- This position is recommended for a potential host in the SLA, although those who are not interested in hosting will not be rejected
- Teaching basic courses on how to sim in a particular genre and format
- Help the Academy Director to formulate the goals and lessons for their class in the Academy

The courses offered by the Academy should include:

- Star Trek PBEM/MB
- Star Trek Live Action (AOL/AIM)
- Stargate PBEM/MB

Volunteers are also needed to offer the following courses:

- Star Trek IRC
- Firefly PBEM
- Star Wars MB
- Wing Commander AOL/AIM

Instructors will be critical in helping to guide new simmers. It can also serve as a great opportunity for Instructors to get a bit of experience/exposure for themselves, and especially for those who are interested in becoming hosts.

When we were seriously considering the idea of starting up the Academy, Seth had posted the positions we would be looking for. I adapted that to follow the same format as the other volunteer opportunities listed here.
