When they're not busy assisting an investigation, the Science staff aboard the Zealous is hard at work, conducting various experiments in the hopes of achieving the next, big, scientific breakthrough. Starfleet Intelligence is also highly interested in scientific discoveries, citing the need to be prepared for almost any contigency.

Despite laws forbidding it, Starfleet Intelligence is interested in drugs - specifically, the type that would greatly enhanced physical and mental capabilities (strength, stamina, endurance, speed, flexibility, coordination, memory, intelligence, etc). In essence, they are looking for something which has only been dreamed about. They want to create the super soldier.

With that in mind, they employ the services of one of the Zealous' Science officers. They do this without the knowledge of the Captain or the department head. They order the crew member to develop the serum, and then test it on two animal subjects.

The foruma proves to be a success, enhancing the animals in every way that Starfleet wanted. The celebrations don't last very long as things start to go horribly wrong.

The enhancements continue way behond what was originally projected and desired. Everything has gotten to be way off the scale. Although the increased mental status started out fine, the brain can only hold so much knowledge. Unable to forget anything, much less expand their minds, the animals started to show signs of extreme mental instability.

Somehow, the creatures break free of their confinement and begin to terroize the ship. They avoid trap after trap until, finally, the creatures kill a crew member.

Captain Ja'arda is furious. She demands to know just how those creatures came aboard the ship. She is shocked to learn that the Science department had performed unauthorized experiments.

With some further digging, the Captain learns that it was Starfleet Intelligence which had given the Science staff the orders to conduct the experiment. Intel, however, is remaining steadfastly silent, uniwlling to share such info out of fear of a compromise.

This leaves the Zealous crew on their own to deal with the threat.

Can the crew come up with a way to stop the creatures without harming them? Can an antidote be found, or some way to reverse the effects? Or could they discover a way to eliminate the psychological portion that has created the maddness, causing the creatures to rampage the ship?

More importantly, can the Zealous crew ever trust those within the Science and Intel department, aboard their ship, ever again?

Since the Storyline Challenge thread is going to be moving on to another topic, I wanted to copy all of the storylines from the auto destruct challenge over to this thread. If you have any more ideas, you can post them here!

Hmmmm. Well, usually a plague that will kill anyone that comes in contact with it may cause this. The entire crew would have to be wiped out to 'cleanse' the plague and make sure nobody else caught it.

Of course then we would all be dead. Maybe this can work if certain crew members were not part of the plague and were desperately trying to find a cure? Then they'd have to stop the auto-destruct before it happened? Or maybe it would and they'd have to go back in time to stop it?

A joint sim with the Caduces might work for this.

The Zealous is asked to try a new computer system. However, it falls in love with one of the female crewmembers (quite humorous) or male if the computer has female engrams. When it get's it's heart broken, it decides it doesn't want to live and puts the ship on auto-destruct with limited time and the captain's command codes changed. It's up to the science and engineering teams and others to either overide it or for someone to convince it to go on living before it blows the Zealous and everyone on it into the next oblivion.

While in orbit of a mysterious planet, the self destruct on the Zealous sets. THe problem is that, at least to everyone's knowledge, the Captain and no members of the senior staff activated it. Everyone had been accounted for at the time.

Additionally, safeguards within the system require both the Commanding Officer and Executive Officer to be in complete and total agreement. If either one is not present, two other members of the senior staff must concur.

This time, those safeguards were completely bypassed, catching the Zealous crew off guard. Separating the ship into mult-vector mode would not be an option since aech section would still independently continue the countdown.

The command staff attempt a voice authorization to override and deactivate the self destruct, only to discover that their codes are ineffective. It's almost as if the codes have been changed, a backdoor access code used, or another one put in place to lock out any attempt to cancel the process.

The clock has been set at 15 minutes, ticking down to doomsday . . .

An emergency conference is called, and the senior staff gather. They are told to prepare for a mass evacuation of the ship, and begin to schedule transports and shuttle trips. While that preparation is taking place, an away team would go down to the surface of the planet in search for what, if anything, could have initiated the self destruct.

When they beam down, the crew finds only one indication of life on the planet - an old woman, who looks as if she had been the only survivor of a crash. Her face is severely scarred, but when she looks at the crew, there is recognition within her eyes plus something else - something sinister and vengeful.

Could she be somehow connected to the events taking place on board the Zealous? If so, how could she have managed to crack their security codes? For what reason wuold she want to see the Zealous and her crew destroyed? Could she be just a pawn, with someone else the true mastermind behind this?

How would the crew react if they learn that the woman is a future version of one of them?

More importantly, can the crew of the Zealous figure out a way of deactivating the self destruct before the ship is destroyed?

I'm a lazy man so I'll just post the convo with the idea in it....enjoy!

PlatinumSaber: Well when Jake was still trying to cope with the nano bots and the sudden revelations about where his future was heading...well he wasn't the most 'up' of people..in fact he threw him self from the ship. Because he thought (and still does) that the Zealous, life, was Purgator, the place lost souls go. Its a living hell, npot able to go to heaven but not evil enough to go to hell.
PlatinumSaber: Zania would go through the same mental struggle, perhaps breaking and thinking the only way to end it was by turning the ship into a massive fire cracker?
ZaniaJaarda: Ooohhhh!!!!!!!!! I like that one!
ZaniaJaarda: Since the XO would also need to be involved, or another person, the nanites could twist her Betazoid abilities and she could emotionally force someone to agree to set the self destruct along with her (seeing that the XO has to concur, or two senior officers if the XO isn't available)

This is the captain as you'll never see her...excited...RUN WE'RE ALL DOOMED! AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

As the Zealous enters into a previously unexplored nebula, strange things start to happen. Inanimate objects mysteriously begin to move and float in thin air - all with no visible signs of tampering.

At first, it seemed almost as if the Zealous was being haunted by a harmless spirit. Either that, or it was some kind of elaborate practical joke.

That thought was quickly dismissed when some members of the crew started to act abnormally for a period of time. The length of time for the strange behavior would always vary, lasting anywhere from minutes to hours. It was almost as if they were possessed.

What made it alarming was the violent tendencies that were displayed. They were such to where the lives of fellow crew members were threatened. Some were even attacked or injured. In every case a voice, which was not that belonging to the crew member, warned the Zealous crew to leave or they would face the consequences.

After some adjustments to internal and external sensors, and with a bit if ingenuity, the crew is able to determine that non-corporeal life forms are responsible for the recent chain of events. They can take possession of a person's body, and then have full control over their actions. There are several aboard the ship, and many more outside the hull, almost as if waiting for their prime opportunity.

Considering the fact that these life forms could easily control the body of any crew member, a genuine fear arises - that these spirits will take control of everyone on board, thus giving them control of the ship.

Not wanting the Zealous to fall into the hands of these life forms, the decision is made to set the auto destruct sequence. The entire crew believes that they are going to die, but they are willing to make that sacrifice instead of allowing the ship to be taken over, and for the threat to spread throughout the Federation.

The countdown to destruction seems as if it's taking forever, even though it's just a short 5 minutes in length. It provides just enough time for the crew to think back on their lives, and to perhaps consider spending their final moments with close friends and loved ones.

Will the life forms have a chance of heart, seeing the resolve of the Zealous crew, or are the brave officers looking at their final moments in life? If the spirits change their minds, how much time will be left in the auto destruct countdown? Will the senior staff have enough time to turn it off? What if a few spirits don't agree with the change of heart, and possess the entire senior staff (except for the Captain), preventing the deactivation of the auto destruct?

Death, Destruction, Missing nacelles... the Zealous is severley damaged, stranded without communications after a battle with Species X. The captain has ordered the crew to abandon ship in escape pods, only senior staff remain. The escape pods are, however, tractored into a vessel that is en route to destroying a harmless world, for reason Y.

Basically, the crew escape to friendly ships and the senior staff aboard the Zealous set a collision course for this massive destructo-vessel...

The CO and XO have beamed down on a diplomatic mission. While enroute to the conference they are captured. Meanwhile the ships comes under attack and is boarded. The crew is set adrift in escape pods while the people that took the ship are on their way to use the ship as part of a rebellion against the government of their world. Little do they knew that 10 members of the crew escaped and are hiding within the ship. They have 5 hours to retake the ship or activate the auto destruct before the ship is used to bring the Federation into a civil war.

Here's another one. The come to the aid of a transport ship that is under attack by 4 ships. The Zealous is damaged and adrift in space and the attackers threaten to board and take the ship. Weapons and engines are gone. Also more than half the crew is incapacitated.

The auto destruct would have to be set. The remaining crew would then have to free the ship or let her be destroyed to keep her out of enemy hands.

Blast It All

The Zealous has been tasked with transporting a rare Iconian’s artefact from the world of Ariel, a planet Jake remembers as one of great importance, one time paradise of the Iconian regime.
And one time fortress during the Collapse, a period of time during which the technological folly of the Iconian’s created such weapons an entire galaxy rose up to wipe them from the galaxy.
The artefact that the Zealous is ordered to carry by the Starfleet Research and Development is theorized to be a map of lost Iconian’s gateways, a machine for creating limitless energy.
But as Jake feared, and as the Starfleet researchers thought of, it is a weapon. Not on the scale of the nanological scale as the Nano Cells in his and Zania’s blood, but that of the Iconian’s construction technologies.
For many machines the components of their constructions are very small, verging on the atomic scale. These machines can not be replicated, nor made by any science except for nano mechanical manufacture..
The artefact is an Iconian creation engine.
A million nano machines can make a shuttle in a scattering of hours.
A billion can rest in the crease of your palm and never be seen.
The countless trillions within the spherical hub of the engine can make a kilometre long starship in a handful of days.
And the engine is activated. The nano bots require food, carbon billy blocks from which to make more of them selfs and carry out their task of constructing their last great order.
An Iconian gateway, the actual device that helped create the sub orbital gateways that helped transport the bulk of the Iconian navy from the homeworld, to the orbits of their enemies’ bases from which a lightning strike would render their planets lifeless in minutes, and hop back inside an hour.
This device, once completed, will drain all power from every vessel, planet or star from a hundred light years in every direction, the shielding technology long forgotten even by Sjet.
Earth, Betazed, is within that radius.
The captains orders a self-destruct and with the crew safely tucked away in the life pods and shuttles and at a safe distance, the Zealous is destroyed. As antimatter destroys the helping nano machines gone mad. And as the Zealous crew drift in there life pods and shuttles, friendships and grievances bloom.
And with the pain of death…
Comes the joy of rebirth…

The Forever War

The Zealous is asked to take part in a ceremony to honour the fallen dead on the planet of Sirius B, a planet long thought uninhabited by the Federation. The ceremony is one of Iconian history, of the first strike made by the Iconian Fleet against their enemy the Ralta that wiped out the nearly the entire Raltain planetary population.

It was the first step in the Iconian’s role to galactic exile, a act of madness that Jake/Valron Zania/Fostra wish to mourn and possibly atone for in some small fashion. Only out of the blue the Raltain navy of nearly 250 thousand years ago comes out of now where, abducts the two nano augments and without further ado warp out of the Sirius B star system.
There is one…small problem.

Ralta forces in the present are at war with a far flung enemy (In fact the far flung enemy are far enough flung to call the Andromeda Galaxy their home galaxy).

And their warp drives, while incredibly powerful devices…they do come with a massive side effect. One day in warp equates to a nano second of normal time. So while the abducted Jake and Zania are gone for only a day as the Zealous receives a small Ralta medical ship carrying a million wounded Raltain…and Jake and Zania.

A Jake and Zania two centuries older.
What happened to them.
And why?

Most people don't enjoy failure, but then again who wants to lose when they can win.. Heres my idea...

The Zealous stumbles across a small craft that is on the verge of losing all power. Aboard the craft is one man, who upon being rescued requests that the Zealous help him save his captured crew from the pirates that attacked his craft.

This could go anyway from here, depending on what the pirates are, and where their hideout is, but in the end, his crew will already be dead which will leave the man distrought...

Ok, not much of an idea, but its a start.

Ok, here is my idea, i'm pretty new at this so if it's terrible i apologise in advance.
Zealous is sent try and end a civil war that has been going on for centuries. The two sides have virtually destroyed thier planet, leaving only two cities remaining, each side commands a vast arsenal of missiles they are willing to launch at their enemy, only the prospect of mutually assured destruction has stopped each side. The Zealous has to try and help the two sides reach a cease fire. During the negotiations a fight breaks out between the delegates in which some of the Zealous crew try to stop, in the fight one of the delegates dies, each side blame the other and decide to attack. The Zealous watches as each side launch their missiles and kill the entire population

Failed Mission Challenge

Okay, here's my contribution!

Circulating rumors have alarmed Starfleet Command. The Cyndrielians are developing a powerful new weapon. While exactly what it does is currently unknown, the rumors state that it would have devastating effects, able to turn the tide of the war with the Federation in their favor.

Another part of the problem is yet another rumor, which indicates that the weapon is being built on a Federation planet. Unfortunately, Starfleet has no idea which one. Plus, when skin pigmentation is applied, it would be impossible to tell the difference between the Cyndrielians and normal Federation citizens.

Desperate not to let another member world be destroyed or conquered, the Federation orders all Starfleet ships to engage in an all-out search for the Cyndrielians They authorize all ships to travel at the maximum warp speed they can possibly attain with their ships (thus temporarially lifting General Order 32) to expedite the search.

The Zealous crew searches several planets, but to no avail - that is until the Cyndrielians deliver an ultimatum via video feed. They call for the Federation to surrender immediately, claiming that their weapon is only hours from completion. If the Federation does not disarm and agree to follow Felonian and Cyndrielian rule, they will use the weapon on key Federation worlds, one at a time, until they finally surrender.

That video was the biggest mistake the Cyndrielians could make. One Zealous crew member recognizes it as Crystalis V, a planet they have visited before. All planets within the system are rich with various types of crystals, even dilithium and trilithium. Because of that, mining colonies are present on every planet. Some even have major cities and offer tours of whole caves filled with solid crystal.

Crystalis V is a smaller planet in the system, with no major cities, but the mining colony offers tours to visitors to happen to come to their world.

The Zealous is the only ship close enough but, even at maximum warp, it would still take almost two hours to reach the planet. Despite this, they still make an effort to get there in time.

Engineering is forced to make adjustments on the fly to increase speed. Medical plans on how to handle mass casualties, while Operations comes up with ways to try and evacuate as many of the colony residents as possible. Tactical and Security develop strategies for dealing witht he Cyndrielians and their ships. Science works with Intel to weed through the reports to determine what the weapon is, and develop their own device that could count the Cyndrielian weapon.

When the Zealous arrives in orbit of Crystalis V, everything seems to be normal. There is no indication of any kind that there might be something wrong, or that the Cyndrielians are actually on the planet.

Unfortunately, the Zealous crew can't take that chance.

Despite the danger, the Captain and Jake decide to take the dangerous task of beaming down to the planet in order to make a last ditch effort to find the Cyndrielians and stop them before the mystery weapon can be activated. At the same time, they could use the opportunity as a way of coordinating the evacuation of the mining colonists from the surface.

The Cyndrielians know that they are on the verge of being discovered, and they are prepared. The weapon had long since been completed, but the video feed with the ultimatum was a lure. They wanted to draw in a Federation ship, specifically the Zealous, so they could witness and experience the devastating results.

They wait until Jake and Zania beam down to the surface, and then activate their destructive weapon . . .

Instantly, the atmosphere of Cystalis V changes, becoming very unstable. Clouds build rapidly, and lighting dances across the sky. Rain begins to pour from the clouds - a lot, falling so heavily, that it obscures a person's vision to where they can barely see another individual right next to them. The ground cannot absorb all of the moisture that is coming down so hard and fast, so the rain water begins to build.

Jake and Zania have only a few moments to realize that the Cyndrielians have unleashed their weapon, and it is the most devastating type possible - atmospheric devastation. They are determined, it seems, to obliterate the environment and residents of a planet by flooding a world. If such a weapon were mounted to a ship, they could silently murder the innocent citizens before they even knew what hit them, leaving no chance for them to escape.

From the perspective of the Zealous, it appears as if the planet has just been completely consumed by a layer of clouds. The storm is creating major intereference, preventing the transporters from locking on and beaming back the Captain and Jake. All they can do is pray that they can survive what is taking place beneath the cloud cover until a break in the storm that would allow them to either beam them back, or send a shuttle down after them.

On the planet, a massive wall of water appears. The storm has intensified even more, the wind sweeping rain that had gathered in one large area into a massive tidal wave. And it's heading straight for Jake and the Captain. They only have seconds before the wave crashes into both of them, enveloping them into the airless underwater environment, throwing them around like rag dolls as they both fight to avoid being separated by the powerful currents.

Thanks to the nanotechnology in each of their bloodstreams, they are able to survive and are eventually rescued. The same, however, cannot be said for the colonists of Crystalis V. All who had worked the mining colony, and were visiting the planet, were killed when the planet flooded due to the nature of the weapon.

Worse yet, it seemed as if the Cyndrielians escaped, and with their most dangerous weapon ever. It could, unfortunately, literally turn the tide of war - by forcibly changing the environment on each world, making it like their own, and killing billions in the process.

Even though the Zealous failed in this mission, the loss of live only serves to strengthen their resolve to find the Cyndrielians before they can devastate another planet in the same way they did Crystalis V.

Good Bye

On an away mission to the lost world of Iconia Jake with Valron's help uncovers a secret chamber buried underneath the bed rock. A cavern wide enough to contain The Library, a vast computer network that it is hope is still active.

Upon strenuous work the Zealous science and engineering crews reactivate the Library only to hear from its central AI, Zero One, that its systems are beginning to fail.

That’s when the books hit the fan, as Jake is hit by a massive electrical surge and sent flying backwards.

Rushed to the Zealous he awakens almost as soon as the closets tricorder is opened, and promptly loses all power.

Jake soon begins to act and behave normally, as though being stuck by 500 Terra Cochran’s of electricity is a easy everyday occurrence. But no sooner than he is released back to duty things become, odd. Common every day words begin to change, he’ll use a strange alien dialect to describe something and then profess he said the right word.

Then when he is found increasing the warp course power out put by…well the figure has a few to many zeroes on it…things begin to go down hill. His mind seems to be falling to pieces, and not even Valron, Kaltor or even the now old and obsolete Construct seem able to break through into the now denigrating consciousness of Jake Sjet.

Now speaking in tongues, fixing thing with a look of confusion. Creating miracles with out knowing it, and all the while the Crew can do nothing but stand back and watch.

Is the answer cryogenic freezing so that a cure can be found later?

Is the answer to his cure within the dying memory of Zero One?

Will he some how build a device capable of downloading the knowledge from his mind and possible removing the nanites?

Or is this the finale curtain call for Jake Sjet?

Next Level

While on an away mission to the planet Sirius B the True Federation attacks with over whelming force. Holding the crew captive they have a simple ransom demand.

The Captains and Sjet must go willing into their hands or the crew dies. Not wanting to risk the crew lives Zania and Jake both go with the TTF who disable the Zealous and then make tracks.

Soon later the TTF’s plans come to fruition. They plan to release Sajuuk-Kar, the name of the Iconian God of Life who’s hand shapes what is. As soon as Jake hears this he laughs, knowing that its just a religion?
Right?

But unfortunately it needs a blood sacrifice, the blood the La Frosta…AKA Zania is though t to release this Great Being. Only with her death do they have any way of supposedly freeing this daemon.

So they turn to a splinter group of the Knights Templars, the Ancient Society set up to protect all life, who know of the ritual to give the TTF their ultimate weapon.

With Zania’s life now threatened they attempt an escape, only to be stopped by Xi and Paladin.

Now under guard Zania is slain, and for a moment it appears as though her death was for no reason.

It is at this moment that Zealous drops out of warp just before it reaches the TTF base, as sub space its self falls apart. Unable to build up a stable warp field due to destruction of local sub space, and thus unable to call for help the Zealous proceeds into the danger zone on impulse power.

Their it finds seventeen TTF war ships, one of them being the TTF battleship the Agamemnon, a Universe class ship that Starfleet still considers ‘under development’. All of them appear to be with out power as though something simple drained them dry. Even their internal bulk heads are frozen to the point that one ship is hollowed out by the fact all of its internal structure disintegrated due to extreme cold.

On the planet below what appears to be a new ice age is gripping the once vibrant world, its epicentre a super cold area seeming to draw energy and radiation from the local star straight down into its core.

Only one life sign is readable, and that is of Zania. Transiting down via shuttle the away team barely make it before their shuttle freezes into a ball of ice. Careful to remain warm the team soon find Zania in the only warm area left.

And are confronted by a being of transparent blue crystal, a humanoid sapphire gem.
Jake Sjet.

Unwittingly the TTF have unlocked something far older than Sjet or Valron.
They have unlocked the Sajuuk-Kar, not the Iconain god but the Ancient Forerunner who created the nano technology that Valron reversed engineered that started this whole sorry mess.

But it does not speak for the Sajuuk persona, instead it speaks for a totally new personality devoid of any thoughts about the crew or memories.

Can it be persuaded to change back, to relinquish control to Sjet?

Or will it simple draw in more energy, suck the Zealous free of life and continue destroying sub space?

Hell Hounds

After a transporter accident involving the Captain and Jake all seems well.

Except for extremely violent night mares of a place like hell, fire and brim stone, armies of the undead…
And both of them see it, share the dream.

It when Zania wakes up with a severed arm (Which re-grows fast enough) that the fact that they are not dreaming but experiencing it that the crew find out that the two Zealous command officers are slowly slipping out of sync with their home dimension.

And falling to a universe ruled by chaos and disorder.

Soon te two of them begin blinking in and out of existence, without word or warning, returning with fresh scars or the odd limb they’ve used to bludgeon a horde to death.
In the end the two disappear and it appears this time for good.

Can the crew get them back?

And can Sjet resist saying “You take the thirty thousand on the left…and I’ll go for that horned guy in the middle and we’ll meet by the Dragon at three-ish?”

Coming to Terms.

The Zealous discovers a planet Jake and Zania know to be a world owned by the Iconian’s oh so long ago. While in orbit they find a single remaining satellite, in fact its soon identified as a planetary escape pod that were used by its population to escape the planet and make their way to a larger evacuation vessel in high orbit. The craft is only capable of holding two or three people, so when Ti’ana cracks the seal on it she isn’t prepared for what's in side.

Almost as soon as the air lock hiss open she’s struck by an electrical current and sent flying backwards as smoke rises from the pod. Quickly rushed to sickbay she’s given the once over and deemed fit for duty, which doesn’t mean that Jake would let her do that any way. Given two days off she soon becomes board.

One the first night of her enforced leave from the uniform she quickly finds her slef becoming extremely emotional, some times violent and sometimes breaking down and crying for no apparent reason.

Its on the second day that Ducane and the medical staff get the shock of their lives as Ti’ana walks into sickbay…well waddles actually…as she now appears to be 7 months pregnant. A few scans show that she is not with child…but the fat she’s having to wear one of Jakes shirts to walk around in would tend to disagree with that.

When she begins mumbling in Iconian and calling people by different names Jake and Zania become worried that she’s either becoming like them or something far worse is happening.

But through all of this Ti’ana seems spookily calm about it all. What is happening to her?

(Note Ti’ana could change to anyone’s name, I was using that name as it just fell off the top of my head. Enjoy.)

That Show.

While on an away mission the crew encounter a being of tremendous destructive power.
Q.

Now he speaks for a while, makes fun of some people. But unfortunately Jake pushes him to far.

“So, you want to be a real boy?” the Q states and in a blinding flash of lights Jake is thrown clear across the cargo bay into a stack of cargo crates. But even as he calls to say he’s alright, the Q has gone…And Jake has…changed some what.

He’s now three feet tall, roughly humanoid…

And made of felt.

The Q has turned Jake Sjet, commander in Starfleet…into blue felt puppet. Looking like the evil twin from the Muppet Show Jake quickly goes into denial “This isn’t happening!”

But with the Q now gone for ever, is their a way to turn Jake back, or is he destined to find a home in kids TV programming?

Whoa! Both are great storylines, Jake! For the first one, are you sure that you want to hear the pitter patter of little feet on the ship? It could become your biggest nightmare, especially with all of the diaper changes!

The second sounds like it could be pretty humorous!
