We Need to Talk

Jayla Rollands
Brice Marcel

“What do you mean I mentioned this weeks ago?” Jayla was pacing her quarters, staring at Brice every couple of steps. “I thought we’d decided that we wanted to keep our separate quarters, when was the decision made that we would move in together?”

Brice had been sitting on the couch in Jayla’s quarters, just watching her pace. “I thought, after all this time, it’d be something you wanted. I mentioned it about two weeks ago, you promised we’d talk it over.”

Stopping and leaning on the back of one of the chairs, she simply stared at him. “You do realize that it has only been about four months, right? As long as the time I’m remembering is the same that you are. I’d never agree to something like this, so why are you pushing so hard?”

“Jayla, you seemed okay with the idea until today. What’s changed?”

It was strange, Jayla looked into Brice’s eyes. He didn’t seem concerned that she’d apparently changed her mind about something she didn’t remember. More so, he seemed upset by it.

“I don’t remember any of the previous discussions about this, Brice. The last few days have been...never mind. I don’t understand why this is such a big deal that I’m saying no. If I’m remembering right, you’ve been harder and harder to get a hold of as it is. Anytime that I’ve wanted to just sit and talk or even just try to find you lately, I haven’t been able to. And now you are asking for us to move in together? I’m sorry, Brice. But that isn’t happening.”

She finally sat down in the chair, not anywhere near Brice. She hadn’t wanted to deal with an argument right now, but it seemed there wasn’t a choice.

And yet, Brice was still just staring, his face seeming to get angrier and angrier.

“I’m not going to try to defend myself. I have done nothing wrong, simply going off what I was told. Maybe it is you that has changed, Jayla. These last few days you’ve not even tried to reach out to me. That isn’t like you.”

He stood up and walked towards the door. “When you want to talk, let me know.”

With that, he walked out the door and Jayla was left alone again. Shaking her head, she was trying to think on what might have changed. Well, obviously there has been a lot that had changed over the last few days, but would it had changed their relationship that much? It seemed like there was a slight change in their relationship that only Brice could see.

Looking back at the door, she stared at it for a moment before letting out a heavy sigh. What had come over him lately? Things in this relationship weren’t going where she wanted it to go. Was it just the fact that things were different now? Or was there actually something wrong with where they were headed? Only time would tell.
