"Past and Present Reflections"
A Personal Log by Cannon Hawke
Stardate 200207.16

So this was the Mercutio? Cannon Hawke was not entirely impressed, as he did not find Excelsior class starships dreadfully threatening. He stood before a port hole from his new quarters aboard the Merc, and gazed at Starbase 27 strinking to a dot. His journey had bought him into something of a circle, and Hawke allowed himself a moment to daydream.

Three years ago, a Lieutenant Cannon Hawke had arrived at the same station-- only then it was called Deep Space Nine. He was the special liaison for the ISS Reciprocity, which would launch to explore the far reaches of the galaxy. The mix of Romulan, Klingon, and Federation officers was somewhat awkward to start, but Cannon was quite glad to have experienced the Reciprocity. No pun intended, Hawke said to himself with a smile.

Indeed, that had been Hawke's first experience under the official jurisdiction of Starfleet. Most of the time, however, it was just a cover story. Cannon was a spook first and foremost, dealing in the business of stragetic operations. Intelligence gathering and assassination were his specialties, and Hawke recalled what an excellent platform the ISS Reciprocity was to perform the tasks assigned to him by SFI. He would dissapear for a week or so for "vacation," and arrive back to little commotion.

With that, Hawke wondered what sort of suspicion he aroused by arriving on the USS Mercutio. Did anyone know who he was? Though his identity remained well protected, and his dossier obviously classified, the Mercutio was still a vessel that dealt in special ops. And those in the Business, Cannon reminded himself, know those in the Business. Hawke concluded there were at least some who suspected him to not be of the norm, but doubted there were any who knew about his past affairs.

Hawke's impression of the crew was a good degree higher than his impression of the ship. Lt. Jg. Henry Crow had performed admirably as a security officer and Hawke's department head, with the bit of bravato and rough 'n' tough style Hawke enjoyed seeing in a young officer. Crow was one of those whom Hawke could readily trust his well-being to. Cannon's impression of Captain Raven had yet to be fully formed, however. He saw in her a confident and able woman, though he wasn't sure about her experience in such a dangerous field. Still, Hawke was never one who judged character well-- he was one far more likely to shoot first and inquire later. He would have to wait and see, and allow her actions to reflect her character.

Well, three years after his first exposure to Starfleet's chain of command, Hawke was back at the bottom of the pyrimid as an ensign. Not that he particularly minded. He just found it peculiar.
